  • I decided to play around with another staining developer. I've heard so many good things about 510-Pyro, so why not give it go? I've tried just about every staining developer out there, and have settled on Pyrocat-HD, which I've been using for twenty years. Before I can see what 510-Pyro can do, I need to mix up a batch. Come and check it out!

Pyrogallol represents a serious health threat if its dust is inhaled, ingested, or if absorbed through the skin. Reasonable safety precautions (like Nitrile gloves, masks, etc.) can reduce or eliminate these risks.
In the video, I am not wearing Nitrile gloves. I am very careful to not allow the Pyro to come in contact with my skin. I always wear a respirator and work in a well ventilated area...if you do not have a well ventilated space, then mix up the developer outside). When I am diluting the stock solution for film development, it's gloves on! Even when I am using conventional developers that incorporate the developing agent Hydroquinone, I wear Nitrile gloves. Keep your work area clean! Safe practices are best.

Yes it is as good as they claim. Need to make another batch and I will be following your mixing instructions.

I really like it. I appreciate that 510 is a single solution and mixes up to a working solution quick and easily. I find myself now switching between 510 and Pyrocat-HD.

This was an interesting video. Is Pyro 510 not mass produced? I’m guessing that or you just like doing everything yourself. I can relate to the later 😂

I prefer to use developers that I can mix up myself. You can buy 510-Pyro already premixed from Bostick & Sullivan down in the US. I've order chemicals from them, and have it shipped up to me in Canada. I believe there are a few other places that carry it, too. Cheers!

If you're in or near the UK, you can buy it from Zone Imaging.

Hey Andy! So I’m getting ready to test out some 510 Pyro myself and was wondering how many sheets of 8x10 x-Ray film per 1+1000ml this could handle? I know you were going to a video on using the stuff soon.

There a good question, and one they I don't have a definitive answer for....yet! The rule is thumb with developers has been about one millimetre is stock per square inch. For 8x10, I make sure I have at least 80ml of stock. 510-Pyro would need 10ml of stock to make a litre of 1000ml working solution. I've used 2ml for one 8x10 sheet with good results at 1+100. I'll have to test more!

@@analogueandy8x10 sorry I just saw what I put lol yeah I meant 10+1000 1+100. So I could try this with my drum and 2ml of working Solution? I’ll test it out thanks!

@@SenpaiSkyy if you use 1ml of 510-Pryo stock per 8x10 sheet you should be ok.

@@analogueandy8x10 oh I got you so 100ml of working solution 1ml of stock is a good place to start then.

@@SenpaiSkyy Yup! You shouldn't have any issues with that. Let me know how it goes!
