    Just going to state my opinion on him. inboard engines/ sterndrive engines are actually really easy to work on if you look at the motor before you buy it you Will find out what the condition is but with an outboard the motor is mostly covered with plastic. Inboards are very easy to work on even without pulling the engine out

      Boston Brown I love the sound the 225 hp Johnson 2 stroke V6 outboard makes on the Larson 186 SEI my dad used to own. It’s a very sweet sounding engine and pushes the boat to 53ish mph after the SS prop is installed.

    Outboards from the experience i had with them, are not as reliable and very expensive to buy parts for

    I bought my first stern drive years ago...bowrider with a 3(?) Litre 4 cylinder Merc and Alpha 1 leg. Having worked on cars for decades, I was amazed at how simple and easy this motor was to work on. There was a lot more room than on this Trophy. I needed few parts that were all readily available and comparable to car prices. Many of the parts have car cross-references.
    I love the low center of gravity, muffled quietness, torque and response from stern drives rather than the lightweight noise and blocked rear view of an outboard. All parts for an outboard are OEM only as each machine is so specifically designed. I run lakes only and trailer my boats so all the issues of salt and growth are not a consideration.
    At the end of the day, for freshwater trailered boats and owners handy and willing to turn wrenches, I/O are fine.

  • @richmac918
    @richmac918 Před 2 lety

    Be careful - this is not an inboard engine, it's an inboard/outboard or stern drive. True inboard engines are typically in larger boats and they have a lot of room around them for maintenance. I have an I/O but it's an inline 4 cylinder (3.0L Merc) and because it is narrow I can do many of the repairs you noted in the boat. No I can't remove the oil pan without pulling the engine but I can replace the starter without too much issue. The problem is with V engines (V6's or V8's) like the 4.3 in this boat. It's about 50% wider, and much tougher to work on. Pulling the engine from any I/0 (whether it's a 4, 6 or 8 cylinder) is a lot of work and not for the faint of heart.

    @davidperry4013 Před 4 lety

    I prefer outboard motors. Easier to service due to 360 degree access to components after popping off the top plastic/composite cover off with just flip a couple latches, and the waste cooling water and exhaust goes straight down the midsection and out the prop making it a much more reliable system, and the water pump is just above the prop drive gear case making the task a breeze. As a bonus the sound they make especially the 2 stroke ones is just music to my ears. Sterndrives/inboards suck unless it’s a yacht, or an actual ship.

    Personally I'm with you! No inboard/outboards, No fourstroke outboards! One more disadvantage to leg drives is the fact that the powerdrive does two right angle turns that suck up Power! The probability that the bellows will leak on the leg of a vessel stored in the water is high! Also the water cooled exhaust manifolds and rises need to be replaced between 5 & 10 years!

    • @aintraboona
      @aintraboona Před 4 lety +1

      ils360 even more frequent if running in saltwater because the raw water is sucked in the manifolds and risers to cool them. Kind of like a pipe inside a pipe, the water runs in the space between. Since they are cast iron, they will rust eventually and must be changed before it rusts through the inner pipe.

    • @richmac918
      @richmac918 Před 2 lety

      @@aintraboona That's true however this is the case because most boat owners don't maintain them correctly. There are anodes in the cooling system that need to be changed out as needed.. They are designed as sacrificial alloys so that the exhaust manifolds don't corrode. Most owners don't even know they have them never mind changing them out. Consequently they rot away and then the manifolds get attacked by the salt water.

You hear people complain about injectors but in all reality if you aren't running non-ethanol fuel you are gonna gum up the injectors. This also applies to carbureted outboards as well. I've had a 20hp 4 stroke Honda on my aluminum boat. I'm unsure of the hours that it had but despite rinsing it, (it was ran in saltwater,) it seemingly dissolved and succumbed to corrosion.

If you have one with high hours and no problems you are lucky and it will probably go forever. But very often that's not the case. Many have early failures and chronic pronlems.

      @@darrenalkire5281 Well I'm no certified outboard mechanic, but if I had to guess he might have limped it home despite the beeping and if there was no oil in the first place then it would overheat and seize. That is if the computer didn't tell it to shut down. Could be possible that there was an impeller failure, but then again it would have to have sent an alarm to the driver. Possibly a problem with the computer? If I'm not mistaken, the computer regulates oil distribution. I guess if there was a series of those unfortunate events, then that could explain it. Possibly a lemon motor. All I know is that I've never seen an E-Tec stranded out here on Puget Sound, Police and some game warden boats use them and same with many PNW boats there too. I think Evinrude E-Tec gets a bad rep because people that have problems with them will go online and complain. What your missing is that the millions of people that own Evinrudes and don't have a problem have no reason to go out of their way to appreciate their motors online. I know there is some bias bs from other outboard fanboys that go online and complain about Evinrude, despite not even owning one. Seemingly making up stories to make themselves feel better about their Yamaha or Mercury. I'm not bashing any outboards, however I feel that if you take care of any brand, they will take care of you.

    Imagine a Hyundai or Toyota engine in there. Car engines have such a great power to weight ratio these days. I know that some people go though a lot of work to retrofit automobile engines in planes for that reason. Aviation engines are so out of date when compared to car engines with equal horsepower. I imagine it's a similar situation with boats, but unlike a plane you need it to be cooled with water, so it would probably be near impossible.
    However in my eyes the best modern engine for reliability is the Hyundai 2.0 4 cylinder with port injection, timing chain, & NATURALLY aspirated. None of that turbo crap which even Toyota is getting on board with now.
    It only makes about 150 horsepower so it isn't that powerful compared to other stern drive or inboard engines, especially since when you get a stern drive its cause you probably need something more powerful, so due it its class it wouldnt make much sense to put that in here.
    However throw that thing in a gyrocopter, or light aircraft & you'll have the time of your life with a very reliable engine.
    At first I thought, HYUNDAI? But their crap, but my brother has had that car for 4 years now (not long), but has a tow strap on it, tows trailers, his small boat, & seafood every weekend with a full trunk & 4 people inside. We also went on 2 a road trips together with that car to BC, & down through America, California, Utah, Nevada. We zig zagged though the United states for a month. In total we put over 20,000KM on that car from that trip alone. He has taken it to flordia every year (I fly lol), & goes on his own trips. Last I remember he told me it just got over 200,000km in just 4 years.
    When my car kicks the can I think I'll get a larger Hyundai SUV instead of the sedan, & that'll late me until I'm married with kids turning 10 lol.

That 4.3 inboard vortec you have on the boat you can get it brand new with 3 year warranty for $7800.00 producing 220hp (turn key) no out board brand new cost that. a Brand New Suzuki 225hp your talking about $ 15,000.00 Inboard is a lot cheaper. Parts for inboard Mercruiser is cheap and easier to find because they have a lot in aftermarket. If you have Volvo Penta then hold on to your pockets because it is expensive. You can't compare one to another. I recommend going new because salt water id a killer and that 2 storke is going to give nothing but problems that's why they stop making it.

Not all inboard motor boats have so little space like yours..I also own a bayliner..but a ciera..25 ft 1986... I have enough space to put 20 of me down there...and has easy access to must components..except the oil pan. I have a volvo penta aq225e. .. AND FOR THOSE NEW TO INBOARD ENGINE please, please one main thing that literally destroy this engines are the manifold and risers( or elbow) .. salt water and a good mix of oxygen will create a lot of oxidation and start to close those cooling water ways up in the elbow not allowing hot water to get out and bye bye engine..they a little expensive yes..say 800 or so to get all parts..but well worth it and if you flush your system you can look at at least 4 years of life on them

    Boy you can talk! Much of it didn't make any sense! You just broke the spirit of a lot of people out there. Things are as hard as you make them. Simple!

    I am a marine technician and I HATE I/Os. Never buy one more than 10 years old and if you already have one sell it before 10 years. If someone gives you one for free they aren't doing you any favors.

    Why did you even make this video. Just say don’t go inboard. I have two inboard boats. No issues.

    kent kirkpatrick I'm going to ask you again cuz I don't want to have to erase your comment because of poor common sense how do you go to fix if you have a hole in the bottom of your fuel tank and if you have a Wellcraft Excel how you going to pull the engine up without removing the outdrive if it barely have 3 inches from the front of the engine to the wall of the boat Common Sense common sense please

      Working on them sucks. Our family loves them. We do maintenance every year on a I/O pontoon. We have minimal problems. I have a 200 hp mercury that I put 2 thousand dollars in 2 years ago With doing yearly maintenance. I would say it just comes down to luck. On the other hand I have a set of jet skis that always break down for one reason or another. Like I said luck..........
