Tip: If you park the car on a uphill or downhill - put It In neutral, press the handbrake and then put It In P. And when you drive off that uphill or downhill park spot, put It In D or R and that’s when you reliease the parking brake so your transmission won’t have that “kick” which everyone with a older car transmissions has felt

I usually have my transmission fluid changed about one a year. A lot can happen in 60K miles. As I have a pickup with a traditional drivetrain, I also have the differential serviced as well. Keeping ALL the oils and fluids fresh will definitely increase the lifespan of your vehicle.

Erich, you are 💯% correct about the x mission. Years ago that’s how the fluid/ oil was changed. Drain the fluid, drop the pan, remove and replace the filter, replace the pan and fill er up with fresh. But, heck! Try to find a place that’ll do it nowadays! It’s almost impossible!

You can't accidentally go into Reverse by simply bumping it.
It will go into Neutral by bumping it, but you have to push the button on the side (like you did when demonstrating) in order to put it into Reverse.
If you are stuck in traffic, leave it in Drive. You may need to move quickly if something happens.
All the new models it still doesn't let you
Both points exactly correct.izuzu trucks,volvo xc90, l200 ser landcruiser,180sx nissan coupe,
ml Mercedes yep dont shift without engaging button and yes in traffic D or N because if you have to move fast taking it outta park quickly and shifti g will never work
You answered my question, thanks. When I'm waiting in traffic at a long light I'll stay in drive.,,, Or turn off my car if it's an extra long wait,
@@youtubefan2132 nah there was this one time my dad was driving me home from the bar after I got plastered and I wanted him to put it in sport so I tried to do it myself and accidentally put it in park. I will say this because I’m a mechanic with 50+ years in the industry. Driving in city traffic with long wait times at each light I shift my automatic transmissions into neutral position so the transmission will free wheel and flush oil through the clutches and bands then right before the light changes I shift back into the drive position while the hole time my foot is on the brake pedal. This method speeds up the rotational shaft speed of the transmission- in turn speeds up the transmission oil pump that speeds up oil flow through the transmission to keep clean fluid running through your transmission and help lower transmission fluid temperature lower that helps keep are the parts in your transmission cooler . It also helps your engine last longer because your engine is idling under load at the stop light at low rpm for up to 1.5 minutes. A lot of parts in a engine are lubricated by secondary oil splash off and at idle rpm your oil system pressure is low and which diminishes oil splash . So that’s way I always let my engine and transmission free wheel in neutral at stop lights.
thanks for being you scotty, i love the motivation and enthusiasum you put into your videos. truly brings out the true side of loving cars !!!

I once shifted my 1989 Toyota long bed pickup into reverse on the freeway at a normal freeway speed (Downtown L.A., non-rush hour time). It was only for a second or less, but scared the xxxx out of me as it locked the tires and shook the entire truck violently. Luckily, it didn’t slide to the side or spin out. After I popped it back into drive, it rode normally and I never had any issues with the transmission. Didn’t realize how lucky I was until this video-probably due to it being an older Toyota built in Japan.

If you can accidentally push your trans from drive to reverse, you already have a transmission problem.

Exactly what I thought.
It happened to my wife some years ago. While driving, a Hyundai Santa Fe V6, 2005 model, she, for an unexplainable reason, went from D to R. I panicked. Next day, Monday, I called Hyundai service and they reassured me that no harm has occurred. This incident happened in 2011. I still drive this car without having any issues.
Thought the same thing because you still have to to hold the side button down to shift from neutral to reverse.
Modern transmissions won't go into R until a very low speed. There's some kind of safety lockout based on how fast the output shaft is spinning.
SmashThat TV
Yeah that's it, you shouldn't be able to do that, unless you press the button, you can go from drive into n but you usually don't do that.

One of the first things I did when I got my license was go from drive to reverse at 10 mph. Got lucky. Car is still strong 3 years later.
I did that once to a 1971 Cadillac Calais, but there was still a lot of sand on the road and as soon as I heard the tires shriek, I got it back in drive and never had a transmission problem. The engine mounts failed a few months later though, and the reverse-slam could have contributed.

What’s the science behind it? I know it’s true an all
@@adamsh1 basic physics really. Force = mass x acceleration. When a car moves it builds up energy and force. When you suddenly ask your transmission to zero that force and energy and then start building it the opposite direction that is going to exert a lot of strain on your transmission, and that is going to result in material failure. In real world you're talking gears spitting their teeth off.
Thank You, Mr. Kilmer!
