I'll say it again: the person(s) who came up with the Muses being gospel singers better have gotten a huge promotion for that idea.
At least that fat one can sing, if she couldn't she deffinately wouldn't belong in movies.
@@williammahe because she has a face for radio.
@@williammahe the model, I found out after posting that she isn't actually singing, none of them are, that made me sad.
@@williammahe .....yeah.....for a bit there....
I think they took this idea from Howard Ashmen's musical remake of Little Shop of Horrors. In that movie Black singers were the narrators. Fun fact in that movie the singers were Pam and Gina from Martin tv series.
The Muses are the most underrated Disney characters ever. Strong grecian gospel singers, with deep strong voices that better be there if they remake this into live action.
Noo everytime they remake a movie or show they completly ruin it i will just watch this over and over . They never ever do it justice
With how they did the new Aladdin OST? No way. They murdered the soundtrack. Dont they do this to Hercules!!!
Better be there.
@@blessedhoney I'd honestly would like a Hercules remake, it could get some people who've never heard of Hercules before go back and see the original cartoon
And also all of those failed Disney movies really needed it
And Lizzo have to be one of the muses of course!!
The animators must've loved the main muse. Cuz they nearly perfected all of her movements and facial expressions. Amazing.
This is because she is supposed to be calliope the oldest and kindest one out of the muses she is also the muse of epic poetry
Rafaella Georgiou i think they meant they must’ve loved the real-life model for the main muse because they so accurately animated the final animation off of her movements and facial expressions
@@dgo333 ik;) that's why I said it calliope had to be perfect just as her real life model which am sure was carefully selected
Rafaella Georgiou ohhh i gotchu hehe yes i totally agree!!
Also the short, plump one. Those two always stuck out the most to me.
As a 2D animator I still can't get over how high tier the 90's Disney movies are
And they heavily critiqued this one 😔 even though it's such a great movie and the animation style is so unique.
This and their (Disney's) new song are the best Disney songs I had ever heard
It was the Renaissance they were at their Peak in Quality.
Well, yeah. It was their bread and butter at the time just like how the MCU is for them now. All the budget and TLC goes to those projects.
@@mechajay3358 I would say the 90's was the golden era for Disney. This is evident by all the live actions and sequels based on the original 90s films.
THAT EXPLAINS Why the muses felt so alive:
THEY WERE ACTUALLY ALIVE!! It was NATURAL movements!
You can't replicate this level of sass without a living base
Yup we danced every number not just that one for the animators
This is the oldest trick in Disney’s book. Their older movies like Sleeping Beauty and Alice In Wonderland used rotoscoping constantly. There’s no shame in referencing real life.
That's how animators work, really.
This is called real motivation capture
Rango also used it
But then dreamworks blamed it on bad acting in shark tale
Me and my 5 personalities at 11 pm when im supposed to be sleeping
This made me laugh out loud at work LOL
Your profile picture makes it funnier
This was the funniest comment ever. People RARELY admit to being crazy
This is hilarious
Oof mooD😂😂😂🤣🤣
And THIS is the only life action version that we need. Don't touch this classic any further, Disney.
Don't worry, they will. 😏😈
Agreed
Boy do I have news for you
Juancho Corleone should l tell him
Funny you should mention that 😅
Everyone talks about the Tarzan, Beauty & The Beast, Little Mermaid and Lion King soundtracks...
But nobody talks about the legendary Hercules soundtrack. It's so inspirational
There are like two different camps of people. Some loved the variety of numbers. The other side didn't like how they opted for modern/gospel numbers when there was the option for more-immersive-Greek-inspired music. I think both sides have good points. But I'm a basic b*tch who f*cking loved the numbers
When I was young the soundtrack was everything, not underrated when it came out.
Maybe in North Korea. Whenever someone talks about legendary disney soundtracks they always include this one.
True :0
@@yiklongtay6029 I mean we literally have absolutely no idea what ancient Greek music sounded like. It'd be really dumb to use modern day Greek music to represent ancient Greece. It'd make no sense whatsoever. The decision to make it be gospel music as an analogue for ancient Greek religious music was a genius idea, absolutely spot on, we don't know what ancient Greek music sounded like, or even what instruments they used, and so using modern day religious music to represent a film about a literal god, us an absolute spot on decision
And the movie is generally one of the worst Disney ones from the 90s, the plot has a lot of holes. But the soundtrack is the best soundtrack Disney have ever created. And that's saying a lot. I'm actually excited for the remake because they could fix all the problems with the plot, but keep all the songs as they are, unaltered. The live action one will probably turn out awful, but it's not a guarantee. It could end up being fantastic. So fingers crossed.
But yeah even people who hate the original 90s Hercules agree that the soundtrack is stunning. I've never met anyone who dislikes the soundtrack
I knew Disney used real actors or the VAs while acting to draw from but I didn't think they had dancers doing the songs and choreography. That's excessive. I DEMAND MORE! SHOW ALL THE GOSPEL TRUTH!
live reference goes a long way to make animated characters look life like as possible. this is something that I notice is absent (or less "pronounced") ever since CGI animation took over. I miss the fluidity of hand drawn animation. Tangled however captures that spirit somewhat, seeing how they tried to combine the best of both worlds from traditional hand drawn and CGI.
it really isn't. they're used as reference. and it some cases it's flat out rotoscoped.
+ShmartinJo how fluid they look is usually based on budget, and whether they use mocap. Look at games like uncharted 4, and you'd be floored by the facial animations, let alone the rest of the body.
+BenjerminGaye the budget part I agree but mo cap? I don't think so. Even by that era when Hercules was made they still use live reference for their work in the 90s. Sure that movie was digitally made with CAPS (as in Computer Animation Production System) but that doesn't mean live reference was not involved or that they were mo-capped.
It's also important to point out that live reference doesn't always involve the voice actors portraying their characters and that it can be completely two different people working for that one character. I'm pretty sure that's applied here too.
1:07 wow she actually did it :O

As a kid, I used to imagine the lead muse, Calliope, was Whitney Houston. Mariah Carey was Melpomene, Regina Belle was Clio, Shanice was Terpsichore, and Jennifer Holliday was Thalia. The actual ladies who voiced the Muses are PHENOMENAL though.
Mariah Carey was turned down the voice causing her mother is white.
how did you differentiate the muses tho bc there's only 5 of em in here
@@roiedni i believe it’s in the credits of the movie, but you can also tell because of their personalities (thalia is the muse of comedy and she has a humorous nature in the movie)

The fact that the Disney animators were able to capture their personality so well is so detailed and astonishing!
@@cuber759 So? Not anyone can do that. Every high praise is deserved for animators, they're like the creators of our childhood.

@@xnortheast1106 damm
@@xnortheast1106 you shut the hell up
@@incanusolorin2607 that's not the point tho. They didn't capture their personalities, they made their own characters with their own personalities. This wasn't a facial mo-cap recording, this was just a performance reference (for anatomy, probably). The actors were the ones following instructions and choreography to fit the characters shoes, and the animators would rather stick to their own knowledge of character expression and exaggeration to create the characters personalities.
Afro greek women with African inspired choreography and gospel inspired music.
The choreography is more Motown actually.
African-American****
@@bee3467 ehh, it's kind of ambiguous it being a cartoon and all. I like the idea that different people may see different parts of the African Diaspora personally.
@@marleyo5065 i mean he said afro greek and african inspired but i feel as though the motown/gospel aspect couldve been described as African American repectively, imo. Wasnt trying to claim all of it or anything but that part is irrefutably african American.
To add: So that combined with the fact that the writers, producers, animators were american it's far from ambiguous. I'd say those girls are very clearly modeled after african american women. I think people get confused cause this movie is dubbed across the world but in it's originality its a greek classic with an american cultural twist.
Black American. Two different cultures.
i adore that they had the performers in the full muse costumes "just" for reference shots. i know it's important for the animators visualizing the way the clothing moves and affects the light, but still, they were already halfway to a live-action music video featuring the most iconic characters of the film.
the muses were always my favorite part of hercules. they were so energetic and entertaining and had unique personalities, despite being minor characters. i'd watch a whole movie starring them.

She was in Princess and the frog too
OMG I WAS LOOKING AT HER AND THINKING THAT! Now you confirmed it, I’m thrilled!
That isn’t Jennifer Lewis, her name is Lillas White this is easily found on both IMDb and the Disney movies wiki
Zero to hero is and will probably forever be the best disney song ever made, so much energy, such great presentation, perfect vocals, impecable stylistic choices, and the best part is the song just refuses to lose steam, it just doesn't end, theres 3 times where it sounds like its peaking so it can end on a high note but the madlads who wrote this just throw that convention out of the window and keep going higher and higher, more and more energetic. This song is just never ever gonna be topped
Ah the 90s... Disney's Golden Age

I feel that the Hercules songs by the muses are very underrated. When they are actually so good and cool.
Judith Martínez not just the songs Hercules as a whole is massively underrated I've seen everything single Disney Pixar and dreamworks movie and Hercules has the best soundtrack out of all of them and I would put Hercules in the top 10 best of the best animated films ever

WOW. I never would've guess THAT is how they did the storyboarding for the movie back then.
wolfguy23 They still do sometimes. Which makes me glad that they still do some things the old fashion way and don't just use short cuts with computers.
Even now they will have people act out scenes to see how people would normally move in certain conditions.
wolfguy23 maybe it's just your email address put that in do then you can try to call them and they can tooo?
They still do, like in frozen for elsas movement in let it go, they used a guy dancing so they can get an idea on what it looks like
Look up Snow White and Alice In Wonderland (animated of course) behind the scenes stuff. They've been doing this since the very start.

I love it when Disney pick the most random elements then combine them perfectly.
Best example: Gospel choir with Greek mythology 😊
To be fair Greek Mythology was Religion at one point (Herc even had Temples himself) also some Bonus Easter egg, they Mention Gladiator here despite Hercules being Set in Greece not Rome, this is because Hercules is the Roman Name of Herc, his Greek name is Heracles.
P.S Women also played a Major role in Greek Religion as Holy women most notable of these are the Oracles at Delphi.

Oh no, like its already pretty good, so good that it doesn’t need a live action
Sure, why not ruin the movies only part-way?
Another Hercules movie when 5 other ones came out last year and the year before? It's like asking them to do another Tarzan when we 3 other Tarzan movies were just made.
It's amazing how they transformed the live dancing into such exaggerated, emotive and unmistakably clear movements that no live action could replicate. I heard somewhere that animation is all about clarity because when time is involved, art can get incredibly confusing to the audience incredibly fast.
Using gospel to promote Hercules's feats makes sense. Greek mythology was a practiced religion so using gospel music which is worship music makes sense
This is hands-down my favorite song of any Disney animated movie ever.

A music video with *accurate hairstyles, clothing, and props.* Now that's dedication.
Hercules is my favorite movie from Disney, so many wise messages:
* It took Hercules about 10 years to gain the skills and strengths to defeat the monsters - he worked hard, never gave up and was patient.
* Hercules needed a coach, he could not have trained on his own - a coach may be professors in school, sports coaches, friends, colleagues at work, your managers, etc.
* If there were no monsters, Hercules couldn't have proved himself - monsters represent the challenges that we'll face in this life to see what we're made of. With each monster we face and defeat, we get stronger, more courageous and thus gain more resources and opportunities in life.
* All of the fame and riches that Hercules gained were great but not what made Hercules happy or truly a hero in the end - it was his love and sacrifice for Meg where he saved her at the expense of his goal of becoming a God. He was fighting monsters mainly for god status while he saved Meg from a selfless heart. He had a purpose greater than himself when he decided to save Meg.
One of my favorite songs of all time and very underrated . smart move to make the muses gospel singers
It wasn't something that the producers came up with muses are known to be talented in art and they are often portrayed singing because they were raised by Apollon the God of music gospel singing was their main thing also they are talking about a God this is why they sing in a gospel type of way nevertheless there weren't many genres of music that time
I honestly don't know which one I like more.

Rotoscoping is a very common technique for traditionally animated films
Even as a child, I looked forward to watching The Making Of any animated film. Some people told me that it takes away "the magic" of it, but to me it INSPIRED me and motivated me to excell in drawing and I even went to art school for a few years. To this day I enjoy watching how Disney animators bring their characters to life...and that is the real magic!
Did you know... Though Herc being paid to endorse products and make appearances might seem like an anachronism, in fact famous ancient Greek and Roman athletes did just that and were well compensated for it. Just like today they were the superstars of their time.
I Love the old classics!!!! they use real people as reference!

1:46 I love that little glimpse of Amphitryon and Alcmene in their home renovated with the money Hercules must have sent them. Goes to show that even after discovering the truth of his heritage and making it big as a hero, he never forgot all his adoptive mortal parents did for him.
Its really heartwarming to see they still used live models and their animated movements to exaggerate in cartoon form in the 90s. As a child I remember it blowing my mind when I saw the video footage of Alice and Wonderland that they used to draw the teaparty scene! Everyone was acting larger than life and it is magical to see that translated to animation 💜

You go gUrl Cindy
Er ... who's Cindy????

You'd be surprised how often real actors stand in for animation. The animators would be schooled in how the body moves, and may be able to apply personality as their working, but to have actors stand in and dance, gives the animator a chance to see the dynamic movement of the cloth, the speed of the dance, and of course the vivacious personalities each actress brings to her role.
Disney has also had stand ins for Alice in Wonderland. Alice's scale against the mushrooms and flowers were difficult to grasp, so large set pieces were built so a little girl approximately Alice's size could interact with the gigantic flora.
Not only for scale. there is well known behind the scenes footage of Kathryn Beaumont (Alice) interacting with Ed Wynn (Mad Hatter), Jerry Colonna (March Hare) and Sterling Holloway (Cheshire cat) for their respective scenes, as a reference point for the animators. you can find it on youtube.
I was going on 10 when I begged my mom to take me to see this. seeing it with the real women that helped create (Mr. Disney did the same with the first, full movie length, "Snow White") such a great movie makes my 29 year old heart sing with happiness. thank you.
This is why I respect older Disney films that didn’t rely so much on CGI and the actors were singer and dancers all in one. ❤️
This is just masterclass 🤌
