Normally, from the people I've met who sign, if they're in the presence of someone who's deaf/mute, etc. they always sign no matter what. It's just like basic communication really. Like, you speak so everyone understands. If it's a foreigner and a person who speaks your language, you speak your language then translate so everyone understands. In this case, you sign and speak so everyone understands. It may sound super obvious, but I just thought I'd point out why they do it all the time regardless of who they're addressing lol

Apparently this is called SimCom, and is very difficult to do because ASL and English have different grammar and syntax. It’s also not a preferred method of communication because facial expressions are actually a big part of sign language, and speaking prevents clear communication.

I remember when I was about 7, my mother took me to the grocery store with her and a woman came up to us and started to speak to us but we didn’t know what she was saying. I then realized after a couple of repeats from her talking that she wanted to tell my mum that she was beautiful. I was always confused on why she talked differently but no that I’m older I realize how hard it would be talking without hearing your voice. I was able to understand her after a couple of repeats though. Sometimes I think about that kind woman and I hope she’s well.

Im hearing impaired myself, was born with a moderate hearing impairment and can communicate both in the hearing world and a little in deaf world. I know about level 2 BSL. I wear two hearing aids and lip read. I once had a deaf friend who liked hanging out with me coz of my lack of sign language she could use her voice more for practice.
The girl in the video did well and showed good confidence.

Both my parents are deaf and although I've picked bits up before, it's only now that I'm actually making more of an effort at the age of 29. My parents and alot of their friends have purposely not taught their children because they don't want their children to become their interpreters in public. They don't want make their kids be responsible or rely on them for translating. Although I know neither of my parents families learnt sign language when they were young, but, and this doesn't make it acceptable, but they were of the generation that were actively encouraged not to learn because bsl was frowned upon and they wouldn't allow it to be used in school. They wanted to force deaf people and children to speak

This is actually the case when it comes to a lot of hearing-impaired people who also have speech therapy. They know how to make a lot of consonant sounds and the breath through the mouth is essentially whispering. It's the vocal cords and controlling them that make it hard to be understood because obviously, it's harder to hear the sound. When it's just air passing through the mouth as they mouth the word, it does end up sounding more like the word at times compared to when it's spoken.

Your step dad is so funny, you’re so lucky to have someone that loves and cares for you so much, and you can tell he’s really trying to understand you. Props to him.

sakrira A dog doesn’t understand words they understand sounds. If you took a dog and made specific grunting sounds associated with certain actions they would understand it. This is why a dog would do great in this situation.
