That’s interesting to hear a deaf person speak when not knowing the sounds of words. She’s honestly doing great.

As a kid I always thought
“Why can’t some deaf people not talk?”
Now that I’m smarter I finally understand how hard it must be to talk without hearing yourself
Yea, it was always confusing to me also
Nomi i did an experiment once, where I made an audio recording of me saying a sentence while blasting music to the point where I couldn’t hear anything at all into my headphones and I pronounced like 4 of the words wrong without even noticing.
ASMR Fern yo, that sounds cool. Like the experiment.

I think sign language should be taught at all schools.
I few people have asked why. Obviously it is so that people can communicate with deaf people in their country. It is also a very useful skill to have.
Janine Dear-Barlow I think it’s something to do with how there is two kinds of sign language x
@@sarz6568 makaton and BSL. Usually they start kids off with makaton when they're deaf and then go onto BSL. I think this is to do with it being easier for them to understand makaton when they are young. People that speak makaton can understand BSL. BSL should be taught in schools.
@@janinedear-barlow3803 Even though makaton uses signs from BSL they won't be able to clearly understand actual BSL. BSL uses different grammar than spoken English.
Makaton is used to support spoken word - Sign Supported English (SSE).

@@lils8557 what
i like how they speak while signing so everyone can understand together
echony thats wha we do over here too
Normally, from the people I've met who sign, if they're in the presence of someone who's deaf/mute, etc. they always sign no matter what. It's just like basic communication really. Like, you speak so everyone understands. If it's a foreigner and a person who speaks your language, you speak your language then translate so everyone understands. In this case, you sign and speak so everyone understands. It may sound super obvious, but I just thought I'd point out why they do it all the time regardless of who they're addressing lol
Apparently this is called SimCom, and is very difficult to do because ASL and English have different grammar and syntax. It’s also not a preferred method of communication because facial expressions are actually a big part of sign language, and speaking prevents clear communication.

Crystal Thompson tysm for letting me know! my mom is a middle school special ed teacher so she knows sign language for her deaf student, and i’ve also seen her talk while signing to him but just assumed that was because she was teaching. i appreciate you taking the time to let me know why they do that!

I remember when I was about 7, my mother took me to the grocery store with her and a woman came up to us and started to speak to us but we didn’t know what she was saying. I then realized after a couple of repeats from her talking that she wanted to tell my mum that she was beautiful. I was always confused on why she talked differently but no that I’m older I realize how hard it would be talking without hearing your voice. I was able to understand her after a couple of repeats though. Sometimes I think about that kind woman and I hope she’s well.

I think that's because if you look at her lips while she signs, it looks like shes pronouncing the words fine. so when you hear what she says and it sounds nothing like how her mouth moves when just wording it and signing, it's a bit shocking.
To be fair, I've never seen any of her videos so I had no idea how much hearing (if any) she has.

Im hearing impaired myself, was born with a moderate hearing impairment and can communicate both in the hearing world and a little in deaf world. I know about level 2 BSL. I wear two hearing aids and lip read. I once had a deaf friend who liked hanging out with me coz of my lack of sign language she could use her voice more for practice.
The girl in the video did well and showed good confidence.
I was wondering why I couldn’t understand her signs at all because I have a deaf studies degree and fluent in American Sign Language.... it took me until everyone else started talking that I realized this is British Sign Language
Breanne Miller I did not know British sign language was different from American, considering we both speak English. Interesting.
same especially when they signed the word again
Can you still understand the basic signs? It it just like speaking a language you aren’t completely fluent in or is it just incomprehensible? I’m just really curious as I want to learn ASL but plan to live in Britain!

Its actually really nice seeing how the family adapts to her deafness and they all understand her signing. (i mean they have to but still)
jphiil I had a deaf girlfriend whose family refused to learn.
I am a teacher of the deaf and tbh it is incredibly rare that the family learns. Most of my kiddos who sign have no communication at home.
SinginginD what really?! that is so sad.. I’m glad you can be there for them. all kids need their parents and communication outside of school 💔
I was going to say. I have a friend who's almost entirely deaf refuses to learn, even though her family did for her. Some people suck lol
This chicks family are wonderful
Both my parents are deaf and although I've picked bits up before, it's only now that I'm actually making more of an effort at the age of 29. My parents and alot of their friends have purposely not taught their children because they don't want their children to become their interpreters in public. They don't want make their kids be responsible or rely on them for translating. Although I know neither of my parents families learnt sign language when they were young, but, and this doesn't make it acceptable, but they were of the generation that were actively encouraged not to learn because bsl was frowned upon and they wouldn't allow it to be used in school. They wanted to force deaf people and children to speak
I love seeing this. I have these struggles with my grandparents, but not my close family. I’m sure it’s because they have grown up with me and their ears are tailored to my speech. But others struggle, and I understand.😌

It’s interesting to see how well you can lip read. Or if you are learning/know how to sign, keep practice reading. I actually enjoyed seeing how well I was lip reading tbh. I learned indirectly by watching my dad do it when I was growing up. Been over a decade since we’ve lived together
This is so wholesome for some reason
I love this. It made me smile. You were definitely trying your best and having fun at the same time.
It's so interesting how our hearing affects our talking. As a kid I always wondered why the deaf would never talk even if they did have vocal chords and a larynx and all that...Guess I was just kinda dumb 😂😂
I think it's because if you never heard before, how are you supposed to know what letters and words sound like? It's like trying to explain colors to a person blind since birth. In fact, they are British, but she doesn't have the same accent probably because she can't hear. She has beautiful long silky blonde hair.
Also they can't hear what they are saying, so no feedback on how they are doing. Its probably like trying to learn to knit with your eyes closed.
It's okay lmao it takes a lot of training for deaf people that's why there is speech therapy classes for deaf students to correct it. I am partially deaf meaning I wear hearing aids, but I have a lisp problem with my "S" sounds because of my hearing loss. It's gotten better and worse with age lol
I think its also TV and movies. They portray it differently than what it is. When "deaf" people on tv talk, you can understand them. Ive never actually met a deaf person who spoke to me.
Rob Krasinski What does her hair have to do with anything lol?
Bless your step dad looks so nervous, but can tell hes a top guy. But his taste in a football team is appalling.

The cutest sweetest most adorable family I have ever seen!!
you can kinda hear her when she says, "and this is my stepdad steve"
This is actually the case when it comes to a lot of hearing-impaired people who also have speech therapy. They know how to make a lot of consonant sounds and the breath through the mouth is essentially whispering. It's the vocal cords and controlling them that make it hard to be understood because obviously, it's harder to hear the sound. When it's just air passing through the mouth as they mouth the word, it does end up sounding more like the word at times compared to when it's spoken.
@@Kchan1223 huh, interesting. thanks for enlightening me :)

I still don’t understand how she can read it like she has no idea what for example the letter “A” sounds like. Wow this is amazing
She most likey used to speak when she was younger but ended up losing her hearing.
Without watching her other videos: Some people go deaf later in life, so she could have heard words spoken, but it doesn't seem that way? (Not to be rude if she has! Sorry.)
And then I suppose one can describe or demonstrate the mouth shapes and get feedback from a hearing person if the sound is being made right. Probably can be done quite well with practice.
Obviously this video is just a bit of fun, rather than the best that any deaf person could do. Just thiught I'd point that out.
Seearch for videos of therapy. Its really interesting how they learn the sound of words without hearing them at a young age
