He is Past-President of the World Federation of Societies of Intensive and Critical Care Medicine and the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine. He is the editor-in-chief of Critical Care, Current Opinion in Critical Care, and ICU Management & Practice, and member of the editorial boards of about 30 other journals. He has authored more than 1000 original articles, and his H index is 193.
