This is some of the most underappreciated music on earth.

There is something very revealing about the Fifth Symphony's program that the reuse of this melody subliminally reveals, but was not noticed by any biographer (I read many biographies). When composing the symphony, Tchaikovsky revealed in a letter that he had been remembering intensely and longing for a great love of youth, long since deceased, but which he never forgot. Well, in Sleeping Beauty, composed just after the symphony, this part corresponds precisely to the prince's vision of his ideal love, which materializes before him like a ghost and then disappears. In the symphony, this love's theme is abruptly interrupted by metals: the premature death of the loved one. And the theme reappears, ending the second movement as a sweet, longing memory.
