    3UR-FE's are a loud engine. It is normal to hear the timing chain click a bit upon cold starts, but after warming up, it should fade away. If its warmed up, and you could hear the actual chain cycling, then yeah, time to replace the tensioner, guides, and chain while you're in there. Remember, these engines are loud. Noisy. But it should be relatively quiet after it's warmed up.

    I had this problem on my 150kMile 15 Tundra, mechanic estimate 4k! I tried Seafoam, put 1 can, then put another 3 cans before oil change, now wow I can't believe the noise is gone!!! It's all about to lubricate the oil.

      Don’t loose your mind over that engine noise, if you don’t wanna hear no noise at all use 5w30 instead of 0w20. Alot of tundra owners switch to 5w30 to quiet their engines. Owners that have 400-500k on their tundras say they use what Toyota recommends (0w20) the engine is loud as it is but no issues.

    2Tr-Fe tacoma 2005 just rebuilt the entire engine, I replaced the tensioner and and the new one rattles like that too. Old one rattles the same, there is an oil port that feeds the tensioner with oil pressure. Can’t seem to figure out how to fix mine, but I need to hurry cause I can only go so long with this rattle going on in my truck. For some reason its not making enough oil pressure to keep the tensioner tight. My theory.

    I've got that same noise, but it quiets down after 5 minuets. How can that be? Dealer replaced "faulty lifters". Still had the noise. Now dealer says bad cam gear, I disagree. I see your vid and I agree bad tensioner. Could you do a time lapse on tearing down to this point? Im in no way going to attempt it but if its gonna cost me upwards of a grand I'd like to see whats involved, just the hvac tech in me.

      @@PeterCastle2A Started to hear it once a month when below 0 deg f at 60k, now at 110k its every cold start up. If I drive the truck right away and keep the rpms up, like leave it in first or second the noise isn't present (i'm assuming oil press is higher and keeps the tensioner "up"). Then after that it won't make the sound all day no matter what I do.

    If it also has a broken valve springs and bent valve, can you explain to to me how is it unrelated. My question is
    what caused the timing to go off if it wasn't a loose chain skipping timing?

    Oil driven tensioners are just a horrible idea....why not a mechanical tensioner that has constant tension without despondency on oil pressure or oil seals?

    • @PeterCastle2A

      It's oil driven and mechanical, there's a ratcheting gear that holds it out, but can fail over time like anything mechanical

      @@PeterCastle2A Thanks for the quick reply! I’ve heard this sound only once before on my truck and it was just after I got home from a similar trip. It appears it only shows up after a long hard drive. Sounds similar to a tensioner but after being so warm do you think it could be something else? It’s intermittent I’ve only ever heard it on two trips and it’ll tick then stop for afew seconds then tick.

  • @mateogamez32
    @mateogamez32 Před 5 měsíci

    Not a needed repair according to the one million tundra man, he didn’t replace anything inside the engine. Other than regular maintenance oil changes, spark plugs, valve cover gaskets etc. These engines are loud fresh out the dealership they’re know for this famous ticking sound. I know people that replaced them chain tensioners and timing chain, their tundras still sound the same. Some of them switched to a different oil like 5w30 and it quiet down the engine.

    • @PeterCastle2A
      @PeterCastle2A  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Some ticking is normal, this was not a normal tick. It had excessive play in the tensioner. This engine alsh had a broken valve spring. They don't all make it to a million miles lol. Don't believe everything you hear, I've seen a lot in 20 years with Toyota
