As a kid I could never tell if MAD was a kid show and my sister and I were scared we'd get in trouble for watching it because we weren't allowed to watch Adult Swim.
It sure felt like one. It had the same age rating as King of the Hill and had bleeped out F words. You didn’t hear that often on kids networks back then
MAD is such a time capsule of the early 2010s, that's the fun of watching it these days lol.
Spy vs Spy was peak, I was so obsessed with those segments!
And yeah -- even if a lot of the references are dated, I still get a good laugh when rewatching some of the segments. A lot of stuff flew over my head back then.
definitely the parts I remember the most from this fever dream of a show (P.S pretty sure who I rooted for also changed)
I had a funny reason for hating this show as a kid: I thought that if you parodied something, that meant you _hated_ whatever your source material was. So if I saw a cartoon character I liked in MAD, I got upset, thinking it was out of spite.
Naturally, I don’t think this today, and looking back, MAD was pretty based. Terrible shame what happened to the magazine.
I didn't read Mad magazines a lot, but I remember being in middle school watching Mad on Cartoon Network before bed.
I remember seeing the magazines in stores and being very fascinated with the artwork on the cover
Same. I remember watching this in middle school too. I think that’s one of the best ages to watch MAD because I understood most of the adult jokes, and I appreciated how much dirtier it was than the Y7 shows on the network. It felt like the channel grew up with me
One things that's funny to me is that in "The Social Netjerk" sketch, Mordecai and Rigby appeared saying "Well speed it up, cause in a few minuets it'll be our time" referring to how MAD would air new episodes at 8:15 and Regular Show would air at 8:30, but by the time the episode aired, Gumball had premiered a few weeks prior, Adventure Time was on hiatus and MAD and Regular Show switched timeslots for some reason (the show that would come up next was The Problem Solverz) and another funny thing is that that sketch turns 13 tomorrow lol
MAD was such a trip dude. I remember watching the theme song pop up on my tv as a kid and being like “ohoho we’re in for a treat folks”
I remember Mousw M.D., and how it ended with Cookie Monster barfing because he was eating broccoli and his stomach was rejecting it
I find that absolutely hilarious as someone who's seen multiple episodes of Sesame Street, because Cookie Monster has eaten OBJECTS before. OBJECTS. This dude's stomach knows no bounds!
Wait a goddamn minute. I ALWAYS REMEMBERED CHIPWRECKED AS STARRING AL PACINO. MY MIND IS BLOWN RIGHT NOW THAT HE WASN'T IN THE ACTUAL MOVIE, MY BRAIN JUST COMBINED IT WITH THE MAD SKETCH.
I'll never forget the Garfield No-Monday Calendar ad. "I hope you finished your paper. I told you it was due on Monday." "Good thing it's Tuesday." The look of shock on that teacher's face is priceless. Also the "I hate Tuesdays" at the end is perfect.
Kermit singing "if you like it you should put some green on it" lives rent free in my head.
As a kid I used to dance to this in the shower and my mom still remembers those days 💀
One of the episode bits, "Diary of a Wimpy Kid Icarus", lived in my mind rent free for years. Great video!
Mad on Cartoon Network was absolutely bonkers but also incredible especially love that the purple pot that guy was voiced by Gilbert Gidfred
Mad is something I looked at oddly as a kid but as a college-aged person I definitely appreciate it a LOOOOT more. It’s so goofy I kinda love it a lot
The spies >>>>
I REMEMBER THIS SHOW!!! I remember i would always get it confused with Robot Chicken 💀 The one skit i remember them doing is the parody they did of Backyardigans and Thor, called "The Asgardigans" 😂
I love the backyardigans!!
But seeing it combined with thor really traumatizes me
@@skunkman9815 yea backyardigans was my fav childhood show, which is why seeing that MAD skit for the first time was so surreal 😭
17:16 Disney XD is still around. It’s just Disney’s version of the NickToons channel by this point.
It’s funny how the MLP parodies in MAD didn’t actually get me into MLP when I was younger until I had to wait til I was 12, oh how dumb my brain was back then 😂
I used to watch MAD when I got home from school. I was so excited when they parodied iCarly bc it was my favorite show back then but got so scared by the Zombi bambi skit that was also part of that episode. I ran from the room & had nightmares about it.
Still too nervous to rewatch it ngl
i have never had an original experience oh my god. i was also really scared of the katy perry parody song where everyone gets lit on fire and she MELTS.
I watched Mad once in my college life that was witty and it was kinda a Adult Swim and I think TBS styled show outside of lol.
I loved seeing bits and pieces of MAD when I was a kid, my favorite sections were spy vs. spy! I switched who I'd hope would win though. I have a vivid memory of sitting on the bus and talking about this show with a random boy in my grade. I was in elementary school.
Your confusion about the celebrity cameos is timelessly universal, I remember as a little kid, seeing "Space Jam" for the first time was my introduction to the Looney Tunes, but also I was sooooo confused about the Bill Murray bit because I was like 4 at the time and did not understand who that guy was, lol.
Man, I used to love watching MAD when it was airing.
I just found your channel and as an autistic person who loves everything nostalgia and video essays I absolutely love your vibe and your content you seem so kind SO GLAD IM EARLYYYY !!!
Facts!! We had the Cartoon Network Robot Chicken and it was so underappreciated and I loved MAD
It was a bonding thing for me, my mom, and later my stepdad. We watched it occasionally together after dinner. I think I was 9-10 at the time
As someone who didn’t have restrictions on what they watched on TV, I understood all the references which is funny because I usually watch your videos because I don’t know your references. MouseMD was my favorite
When Mad the cartoon came out my dad (who loved the magazine as a kid ) would watch the cartoon with me. He is gone now but now it’s a good memory for me
I just remember this show parodying Yu-Gi-Oh quite a few times and as a big Yu-Gi-Oh fan, I got excited every single time that it was mentioned
The one I remember most was a parody with Yogi bear called Yo-Gi-Oh, it was wacky
a MAD sketch i remember is a pikmin parody where it's used to advertise pikmin to kill any animals infesting your crops then it turns into utter chaos and then they guy in the advert backflip kicks olimar out of his crop after his products don't work well.
Stumbled across this video and loved it. It brought back memories of MAD magazine from my youth which for me started in 1962 at age ten . When the show came out I tried to watch it whenever possible. Spy v Spy was always my favorite with both the magazine and the show. Great job
amazing video. I was 12 years old when this show came, it feels like yesterday that it was on the air. so it's rather interesting that people younger than me saw this as a "fever dream" show! some of the skits that lived rent free in my head was 'WWER' , a hybrid of the ''WWE'' and the medical show "ER". There was also 'Rejected Pokemon", that one i remember a lot because Punchachu's special ability being kicking was the funniest thing ever for me.
i grew up watching mad as a kid in BRAZIL!! most references went over my head but this show really molded my pop culture obessesed brain
😭 You clarifying you’re sick is so funny! I thought you started taking hormones or something, and I was fully on board/in support! Hope you get better though! :3
My favorite MAD skits they made we're the WWE skits like WWER, WWE Bought A Zoo, CM Punk Beds & Le The Miz since im a big wrestling fan
16:28 Both War Horse and Tin Tin were directed by Steven Spielberg as well. The ship was named unicorn and unicorn is a horse so I guess it makes sense.
Man MAD Was literally a Fever Dream
I still Remember The “My Little War Horse”
And The “Snott Pilgrim Vs The Wonderful World of Disney”
And the “Gaming’s Next Top Princess”
I only know Mad TV the sketch comedy series from Fox. The sketch that stood out in my mind was the Disneyland sketch where revealed secrets are "sniper-silenced" and the witness is distracted by a marching band while the CM victim is taken away and replaced with an animatronic. To me, that says a lot of about the Disney company when it comes to their theme parks.
Yes MAD was one of my favorite shows when I was a kid I loved it
I mean this with all my heart, I would LOVE to see some more videos about comics of any kind. I've enjoyed your videos and seeing you share your interests is super engaging.
Veggietales from the crypt haunted my subconscious for years.
It's so bizarre that I've gotten to the age where some of the CZcamsrs I regularly watch are younger than me. Even if only by a year.
Great video! William Gains only got a credit for developing the show because he was the publisher/co creator of the magazine. he in MAD’s words “went on permanent vacation” in 1992. Kinda like how in every film or movie adaptation of Spider-Man Stan Lee is listed as a Producer even though he didn’t do anything. Only William Gaines didn’t steal credit for anything 👀
"When life gets a little crazy, don't get even GET MAD!"
This and Regular show was my childhood.
I used to be OBSESSED with Mad TV and Robot Chicken- don't like either now- but I still get a lot of nostalgia from the Spy VS Spy theme
oh my god your channel is such a gift its relighting old memories from 6 yo me and i love it, i swear mad was such a fever dream show
your sweater vest is so stinking cute...love your aesthetic
I miss MAD so much. It was the highlight of my day
I remember mad so well it's embarrassing to admit. I'm autistic and I've also had a very good memory, so when I was younger the show was a bit of a hyperfixation of mine. As a result, I still have skits, and in some cases full episodes memorized because I would just watch the episodes over and over and over. I'm so happy to see someone talking about this show!!! I've always loved it so much
I should specify the full episode that I have memorized is the first episode. It was a parody of Avatar. My favorite line was always "we were going to send the A-team, but they wouldn't fit in the pod"
The 2011 Tintin movie was motion capture animated not live action.
I always loved this show. I didn't get all the references, but adults watching with me could. Plus Spy Vs Spy has that classic Tom and Jerry feel and always surprised me. I honestly like the parodies of two properties smashed together, they got pretty creative with it even if not all of them were super funny. Just seeing off-brand characters and pop culture was fun enough for me.
Mad was my favorite show in middle school. To this day I’m still mad at CN for canceling it. I think that played a role in why I don’t watch tv anymore
YESSSSSSSS YES YES YESSSSSS SOMEONE BRINGING ONE OF THE BEST TO EVERYONE'S ATTENTION THIS IS SUCH A GOOD VIDEO THE POINTS YOU BROUGHT UP WERE AMAZING YOU'RE SO GOOD AT RESEARCHING AND TALKING ABOUT STUFF ONLY I CARE ABOUT THANK YOU!
I'm so excited for this!! Your original MAD video was the first video I saw of yours!!! :)
Well that’s really great and you are indeed correct about how much this show was underrated and unappreciated by many people. I remember seeing it on weekday afternoons and there was something about it that always made me really excited for the stories and many of them were fantastic to me although you didn’t mention my personal favorite- The Adjustment Burrow! I loved this segment so much and I even found the pairing that they made up so adorably cute! I still ship Eyore and Twilight Sparkle to this day and that will forever be my favorite mad series segment ever! It’s a strange pick and not a popular one but it will always be my personal favorite!
I remember bonding with my childhood best friend Caroline in third grade about mad. It’s so nostalgic and has such a fond place in my heart.
As someone who is a couple of years older than you, I absolutely loved the references. Oftentimes they were shows I saw my parents watching so I was able to get the premise.
I remember the mad news segment being an intro that teased everything coming up in the episode. This segment was also what they would use when advertising the new episodes throughout the week
Mad is basically a friendly family version of robot chicken and I loved it for that😂❤
At first i didn’t like MAD but the older I grew, I actually started to like it more !! and i wondered why it was short lived. love your videos!! so happy to see your channel grow
This show is such a fever dream 😭 I searched for years… years! It was so difficult to find. I watched it with my mom right when it came out and right up until it ended. Ugh this makes me so happy you’re talking about it. I’ve never seen any of your videos before. Excited to watch this one (:
Haha I commented before the video started. My mom loved watching all the kids shows with me. A lot of the time I would catch her laying in my bunk bed watching spongebob or MAD on my mini disney princess tv 😂
I was wanting to rewatch this show! It was such a delight growing up. I’m glad you did a video on it. I wonder where it can be freely viewed now?
I also watched this show a lot when I was a kid! So cool to see someone talk about it!
i watched crash and bernstein for the first time as an adult and enjoyed it honestly but yeah it's likely because i just enjoyed the concept of a puppet interacting with live action and it just being treated as the norm in universe lmao the intro is so iconic too also on the topic of relating something to robot chicken i thought buddy thunderstruck was another sketch from that show
For a second I thought you were gone. But I finally found you. I was subscribed
OMG this video is a whole time capsule, it brought so much flashbacks lol
MAD was literally my fav show on Cartoon Network. I remember being so excited when it would come on or I would see it would be up next.
Thank you for covering this show! When it first came out, I was 6-7, and I remember watching every episode! I din't get most of the jokes at the time, but I LOVED it. I used to sometimes revisit this show with other shows I watched as a child (IE: Incredible Crew) because of how weird those shows were... They just, stood out to me in their humor and presentation. I had forgotten about this show for a while until now, but just sitting down to watch this and hearing the Spy VS Spy theme brought up so many memories...
Edit: Wait you're ALSO 19? I keep forgetting that a lot of the CZcamsrs I watch are my age lmao
I'm glad to see people finally showing appreciation towards MAD. I loved watching it on CN as a pre-tween in the early 2010s, and I was kind of sad when I first saw people on the internet talking about the show like half a decade ago only for them to express how much they hated it.
This was a good show, i think back to it at random times and I tbh remember it being more dirty than it probably was. I usually remember it when I think about the spy vs spy
I didn't get to watch a whole lot of MAD growing up sadly but I do very much remember loving the intro at least haha. It really was a cool concept though, and I'd really love to be able to watch it today and understand all the references. It's a shame there isnt a super easy way to watch it all as far as i know.
but! Great video as always!! two thumbs up, I loved it!👍👽👍💖💖💖
Hii, discovered your channel on Monday and I'm obsessed, been watching all your videos as I work from home. My family could never afford the toys u mention buy I remember them well and love hearing u talk about them. Just wanted to leave my first comment hehe.
i always loved spy vs spy. i had a spy vs spy themed birthday when i was 7. i will never stop loving them.
You just refreshed my memory of this show, because i forgot it existed. Vaguely remember looking at a little bit of it, but i was 20 at the time soo I wasn't watching much CN at this point.
I do remember the news segments as the show opener! I'm so sad this isn't much available- though I know all the different franchise parodies means there's about a less than 0 chance we'll ever get a home media release or even streaming again (when I watched it during its initial release it was on demand from Comcast)
Spy Vs. Spy lives in my head rent free to this day.
I LOVED THIS SHOW! Even the sketches I didn’t fully understand usually won me over with the animation style, and I loved spy vs spy
I remember watching this show with my cousins whenever we were together and whenever it aired.
I miss Mad so much. Not just the show but the magazine in general. It was one of my influences on my own comedy growing up.
Your intro was great!
MAD was such an odd part of my childhood lol, I only watched clips of it but whatever clips I watched just felt like some weird ass fever dream. I seriously wonder how kids watched that show and didn’t leave being utterly confused
You say that Wolverine was a recurring character to appear in the show, that reminded me that The Hulk was another character they would usually do jokes based on.
Also Hulk was the protagonist of a running gag where he would smash onto other sketches asking for more time on screen.
As a little note, Hulk is my favorite super hero and I was really obsessed seeing him featured in other media. By the way, that joke of The Hulk not having enough screen time aged like fine wine!
i remember watching “my little war horse” at a hotel with my grandmother and being traumatized. i have been thinking about it since.
18:23 I know I’m like super late about this, but the answer is yes! Every episode would start with the news bit. In fact every episode was formatted like this:
- News
- Part 1 of main parody
- skits
- a shorter parody
- part 2 of main sketch
- Skits
- Spy Vs. Spy
- Another short parody
- Part 3 of the main sketch
This may be a reason why there were so many repeat cameos as they all might’ve been part of the same segment. The main skits also mainly featured celebrity cameos as well. It’s hard to find an actual full episode anywhere but I know for sure this is how they did it.
The reason why I remember this so vividly is because I watched it during an era where I was finally allowed to watch it as I was older and it was no longer making new episodes, but would play reruns late at night for older kids plus I remember watching them when on demand used to be a thing. The reason I wasn’t allowed it at first was because I got nightmares of the Bambi parody where his mom became a zombie lol.
I’ve never watched the Mad cartoons but I did watch quite alot of Mad TV on late night cable! It’s cool to see Mad had media spinoffs including animation, the magazine covers are still so iconic 🧑🏻🦰✨
The things I would do to go back in time and watch every episode again. I wish it was on Netflix or something 😭😭
Im so happy that Im not the only one who remembers this, a core memory I have was the jack the giant slayer movie parody
I grew up with Mad TV (live action sketch show), and I also got the magazines for a year from a school subscription thing. They didn't really stick to the magazine vibe in the live action sketch show after the first few seasons.
When this Mad show came out, I was really interested in how they do these parodies for kids. I was also happy to see Spy vs. Spy again! I think they made them 3D in the animated Mad because Mad TV had them animated in 2D already? Like they wanted to do a little more with them this time.
They really need to put the whole show on streaming. I'm pretty sure the news segment was the opening joke, and then the title sequence happened.
This in the background of me trying to beat a mini boss in the game I’m hyperfixated on is so insane :3 I love it, it’s so chaotic
0:54 72k subs in 2 years is wild.
I looooooved mad when I was young. I remember I would always watch it with my brother and to this day we still quote the show😋 The thing is that I didn’t really understand because as a Latin American, most if the shows being referenced were not that big in my country and I’m sure I still wouldn’t understand some things nfndjdjdj. But I did enjoy the show a lot and watching this video brought back so many memories! 💗 You did an amazing job 🥰
Fun fact: I remember there was an episode where they did an investigation on tiger for k1lling? people by jumping on them and at the end Tiger d1es?? and remember HAVING NIGHTMARES WITH THAT 😭😭😭
How do you not have more subscribers? You're like my fave youtuber 💐
I got into Spy vs Spy when I was twelve and a half. When I was fourth to twenty, I was obsessed with Spy vs Spy
FINALLLLLY OH MY GOD THIS WAS MY FAVORITE SHOW IVE NEVER SEEN A CREATOR TALK ABOUT ITTTTT
I remember the show being a fun time, might revisit someday
I'm surprised this show never did a Gumball parody cause of all the different animation styles
Congratulations on 73k subscribers 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤🎊🎊🎊🎊🎊
TO THIS DAY i think of the Devil sneezing on bus skit anytime someone says "bless you"
21:25 YO i dont have clear memories of that night, but i have very vivid memories of the advertising for regular show and im like 95% sure i was there for the premiere. THAT must be how i discovered MAD omg
The sponge wow add is hilarious especially when they bring out the moppet and the sponge yells run!!!!
the tin tin movie isn’t live action just ignore that bit please 😭 (i remember nothing about the movie my bad)
No worries I know a lot of people think it was live action because how the visuals looks so good since WETA Digital did the movie
Not a big deal, Happens all the time 👍👍👍👍
for some reason i have the mandela effect about a live action tin tin movie
@@pyewacketttttright?? i could’ve sworn
@@lulaloopsey I'm going MAD for who cancelled this👿 But fr good video
Fun fact: Both "The Adventures of Tintin" and "War Horse" were directed by Steven Spielberg and came out (in America, at least) the same month, so that may be why they were in that parody.
