Tech 21 stuff is great, I just got a little bored with the overall sound of this unit. I have a tech 21 distortion pedal from 1991 that sounds the same and has more tone options. Other than the FX. You can’t really beat this pedal for the quality, sound and the convenience however. I would like to try out the other models.
TECH 21 are shit hot and always have been. that XXL distortion is just the most fun ever with it's touch response and warp control.......their reverb is glorious. tech21 and TC all day for me
I've seen RK likely 25 times at small clubs all over LA before The Winery Dogs and likely prior to his signature Fly Rig. He always either appeared to plug direct into a Cornford 50 signature?, or some vintage Marshall Plexi. Always sounded like the God he is. 🤘
Did you play The Fixx's One thing leads to another? I love this pedal; I recently got the older version used and still use the og Fly Rig 5. In my experience, you really need to spend some time with the sansamp gain and the level of the distortion/fuzz side in order to balance everything and make it work for both clean and overdriven or, rather, distorted. The sansamp eq is also very sensitive, I find I never need to go too far from noon on all three controls. Cool demo!
Plenty of good "rescue" boxes on the market. This one seems decent but for a few extra benjis you can get real assurance/insurance or a true first line rig these days, and they will fit in your backpack as well.
I had a sans amp when I was a teenager that I really liked using as a drive/character pedal into whatever 2x12 solid state bullshit amp I had at the time. Have been curious about this unit. I just finished a tour with nothing but an Iridium and an 80s Boss overdrive so this has some curb appeal.
I just got this version. I am hoping to run a Friedman BE OD Deluxe before the RK5 and using the RK 5 boost as a second master volume for the Friedman settings. This would give me 8 sounds- clean, omg, and both Friedman channels, and 4 boosted solo sounds.

Oh boy, ever since I saw the first one of these like decades (?) ago, I thought they look silly for some reason. And because of that I always thought they must sound just like you'd expect from a silly board that has everything.
How well does the boost work for solos? I normally have a volume boost (3-5db) but since this boost is pre-amp I'm concerned it won't have quite the same effect, and this model doesn't have an effects loop either.
I had one of the MK1 models, I was so disappointed with it, well with the omg, which just sounded awful to me, which was a shock as I had a Tech 21 amp and it was awesome
I love RK, but I briefly owned one and returned it. Waaaay too noisy and the effects quality was pretty meh. It's a great form factor, but I walked away unimpressed with it's performance.

Cool review Michael. I tried this thing direct and yes it was a bit 'fizzy'. If you use it in a normal pedal setup it is pretty cool.
A few years back I had a Fly Rig and it was the noisiest pedal ever. This doesn't seem to be as bad, but I can detect some background hiss.

You are correct. 1/4" to an amp w/o sim, XLR to interface-mixer with sim.

I wish it had a liiiiiiiittle more gain/dirt going on. Fuzz isn't my thing, so I'd opt for more grind

I was not a fan of the first version. How does it compare? My tech 21 blonde with a couple of pedals was much better tonally.
