How to Replace Gauge Cluster & Heater Control Panel Light Bulbs - 1991 Honda Civic Wagon

  • Pretty easy install and only a few tools are needed to complete this job. My heater control panel lights were both burned out and I had 3 bulbs out inside the gauge cluster. It was annoying not being able to see the heater controls as I use them frequently since the weather has changed. I did not want to use LEDs because some of them do not have the same light direction as a stock bulb and can look odd inside the cluster or control panel.

    I've been watching some of your very informative videos since summer 2017 after I purchased a 1989 DX. The 2 owners before me really Frankensteined the hell out of it -- it has a VTEC engine swap from either a '94 or '95 CRX SI, the entire dashboard and transmission are out of a '92 CRX that hit a deer, and they didn't convert the ECU and electronics to OBD-1; instead, they notched out the bolt hole on the 0BD-0 distributor so they could swing it far enough to "trick" the engine. Some income and worsening medical issues prevented me from properly working on it for a couple of years and then it sat, untouched, in the garage from September 2020 until January 2024. Now I'm finally ready to get serious about restoring it. Your videos have been a Godsend for my ability to study the ins and outs of the workings of this car! I greatly appreciate it!

    Hello. This is a very informative easy to follow tutorial video. I have a 1991 Honda CRX DX with 377,000 miles on it. About 3 years a go, the bulb that illuminates the speedometer needle went out. Now, the bulb that illuminates the tach needle has went out. If i'm not mistaking, I think it is the 2 bulbs that shine down, correct me if I'm wrong. Can you please provide a part number for a link for those bulbs. Also, the bulbs for the hazard light button and the rear window defroster has been out for years. Your help will be appreciated. Again, thanks for the video. Ryan

    Hey Jon I have a question, I'm from Chicago and I have a 1991 Honda CRX. A couple of weeks ago, the temp reach freezing and I had to jumpstart my CRX. As I started driving it, I noticed the clutch was more sensitive than usual. Maybe because of the freezing weather and today, I had it in 1st 2nd or any gear and as I'm driving, when I press the gas to the floor the speedometer goes up normally but the RPMs skyrocket, it's like I have it in neutral which it isn't. Any help is greatly appreciated. Also could you do a video on how to do timing belt, tensioner and water pump plus timing

    • @GarageBuiltHondas
      @GarageBuiltHondas  Před 7 lety

      So the tachometer goes up more than it should when gas is applied and in gear? Sounds like you have a broken tachometer. They can break. I had this same issue but it was my speedometer which broke and did the same as your tach. Here is that video.

      @808Deathmetal Před 7 lety

      It's never turned on with the fuel pump, like it's supposed to, all of my other lights surrounding it turn on but no the CEL. Maybe you can give me some more insight to this. Although, I know the 1st gen integra setup for storing the ecu codes is different for each honda. So, technically, there's supposed to be a 10 amp fuse on the positive battery terminal that is used, somehow, with the memory storing of codes for the ecu. Someone before me tried to bypass that 10 amp fuse, and just got rid of it entirely, putting the small wire that feeds the ecu with the 60a battery wire feeding from the positive terminal to the firewall fuse box. I threw a 10 amp fuse on the positive terminal, paired with the small ecu wire, thinking that would solve the issue.. but to no avail. Maybe you know someone who has had this same issue bfore? Any detailed help is much appreciated. I want my CEL to function proper. help. lol

      I thought about it but didn't want some cheap LEDs to not shine in the cluster well. I may do so in the future. If you can get some LEDs that are multidirectional like a regular light bulb then I would go for those. The ones that have the LED shining just forward will not work well in the clusters leaving darker spots where the light doesn't reach.
