John Jolson - I appreciate your comments, I have often said the same thing about Riva Ridge in many of my posts. Penny was under a lot of pressure from her brother to sell the horses and could not find a good trainer ( she could not get Lucien Lauren's son, so he recommended his Dad, ironic ). Riva had as much heart as any horse, just not always as gifted. I really did not like how he was completely ignored in the Secretariat movie. BTW I had a chance to visit Meadow stables in the spring of 1972 before all this started, I got to pet Riva and a beautiful and frisky 2 year old chestnut with 3 white socks. Who knew ?

Its hard to do almost impossible. He went wire to wire in the Belmont to but I can't find the Preakness did he not run or did he get beat. Because he won Kentucky and Belmont????? What happened to the Preakness???????

Riva Ridge was 1-5 odds in 1972 Preakness Stakes, but he finished fourth to longshot Bee Bee Bee, which was ridden by Eldon Nelson.

Riva Ridge quite literally saved the farm (!) of the wonderful Miss Penny Tweedy back in the day (1972). Miss Tweedy (who would later return to her birth-name, Chernery) owned/oversaw "Riva Ridge" (barn-mate to Secretariat) and Riva amassed a bundle of wins in 1972 - that sweet boy won 2 of 3 of the "Crown Jewels" of horse racing in the spring of that year - starting with the Kentucky Derby. Riva would fall short in Maryland (Preakness) on a sloppy day (sandwiched between the Derby and Belmont). The Belmont win was a sweet comeback - alas, there was no "Triple-crown" on the line after the defeat at Maryland. However (!) Riva fully (finanically!) paved the way for the incredible Secretariat's amazing run in 1973 - the film ("Secretariat") fully glossed over Riva's keeping Miss Tweedy's farm from insolvency and setting the stage for the jaw-dropping Secretariat's wins a year later - taking the "Triple Crown" of racing. Miss Penny would later say that while she had great affection for Secretariat, she fully loved Riva Ridge - as "Riva" wholly returned every bit of attention/affection that she (Miss Penny) gave to him. Any true animal lover would fully understand. In early 2015, our Miss Penny is still quite bright and going strong - at well past age 92. Bless her heart for always.

A lot of people forget how good RIva Ridge was, because Secretariat was his stable mate.

      Secretariat was his brother.

TheProfessorOfLife I love Riva. He would race and the reporters always wanted to talk about Red. I love Red too tho. I'm gonna buy that book Penny's daughter wrote about Riva. I miss him still.

joseph keeney , Straight Flush was his son (Rivas). Secretariat was Straight Flush's brother. Same Mom. Riva and Red were best friends..

Back to back Triple Crowns for that amazing team if not for the sloppy Preakness in '72. Riva Ridge .... incredible horse!

Riva was such a fun horse. What a shocker, though, when Bee Bee Bee won The Preakness

No, it wasn't a shocker. It rained in Maryland, and no one thought he would win on a wet track.

If the Preakness in 1972 was run on a dry track Riva Ridge would have won the triple crown. I can't find any footage of that race anywhere.

In the April 2018 edition of Columbia magazine, Secretariat and Ron Turcotte (a member of Knights of Columbus) are featured on the cover. In the magazine story, Turcotte affirms exactly what you say, that Riva would have won Triple Crown if Pimlico had been dry. Turcotte also affirms in the story what Ms. McDonnell says above, that the movie got it wrong - Riva Ridge saved the farm.

Riva Ridge is my all time favorite horse and I'd like to start a go fund me to raise money and have a movie done or documentary to set the record straight on what actually happened. It galls me to know that many people will believe the Disney movie instead of knowing the truth.

If the track hadn’t been muddy on the day of the Preakness, Riva Ridge would have won the Triple Crown in 1972.
