    We would like to see a video on LOG vs RAW.

    • @MarcinRutkowski
      @MarcinRutkowski Pƙed 2 lety +1

      but it's two completely different things. RAW does not have attached color space neither gamma. You need to choose how to interpret RAG and You can choose LOG gamma and colorspace or REC709 or even REC2020.

      Raw is not a video file. It’s a data file before debayer and it has metadata about the data.
      Light in physics works linearly. But human eyes perceive light in a logarithmic curve.

      But logarithmic curve is the way to shoot data. RAW have their own LOG like ARRIRAW or REDCODE. Like somebody have wrote before RAW wasn't decoded. It's mean we can change ISO, white balance or contrast and ect. with no destruction)
      We can shoot in S-Log and C-Log at MP4 and MOV containers in cameras. But Sony and Canon have their RAW codecs to shoot the same way but in RAW)

I dont find anything about BM process that is confusing. in fact their menu selection trees are the most simple ive ever seen (especially comparing to Sony). Just shoot BRAW using the latest color gen science. theres nothing complicated about that. Maybe theres some other process that complicates things but I havent seen it. in fact sometimes I feel like my choices are very limited on BM cameras

    yeeaaahh do the dynaimc range video ! being a cinematographer yourself i think that you also should do a video about how to lit some thinking about the grading itself ( luma, sat, hue ) is it better to shoot as close as you want the final product be? also i been having trouble with noise in cameras like RED or Blackmagic pocket or Sony fx9/fx6 even when i intend to do some low key exposure and leave some black spots in the shot, and if a low it to much it makes WAY too much contrast for the client but when i finally get to the sweet spot where i park my blacks it gets some noise, i know that all of this would be better if i take your course, unfortunally i cant afford it but some day i will

I understand the concept of dynamic range, but what does more or less dynamic range look like when you’re working with LOG footage? Perfect rant on Blackmagic LUTS. I tried them, gave up and just grade from scratch.. pick 2 or 3 shots in a project grade all three together, make a custom LUT for that project then apply that to the entire project then tweak it. Perhaps not the smartest or effective way.. but learning fast on my own. Maybe it comes from photography side where you have a Tri-X film and graded or multi grade paper and filters, and your pick filters or papers depending upon the negative and then with testing figure out which grade of paper, exposure etc or earlier in college multi graded paper so you can just change a filter in the enlarger.. then expose paper, move from tray to tray, then wash, then dry, then take out in the lit room (20-40 minutes from start to finish to get a test strip with various exposures to then start dialing in the image before you figure out where to dodge and burn.. so video grading by comparison, is FAST and easy.. hahaha. Yeah I know.. it’s not, but it’s fast vs old film/paper enlargers in Black and White or even more so color reversal film or positive (slide) to paper. (Illfachrom/Kodachrome etc) My limited experience with trying any LUT especially the dozen of BM LUTS to rec 709 was that it clipped more than I would clip and I had to put as much effort fixing the generic LUT as I would be just grading from scratch. For me it seems easier and more logical. Does anyone else grade that way? Is it just because I have older style of skills or is there an advantage? I totally get the idea of having the generic REC 709 conversion on each clip however.. even if I don’t use it.. just to see what BM or other company says is “Normal” Sometimes I have it on to preview footage then turn them off and grade how I see the world.
    Yes dynamic range video would be good. I figure camera manufactures lie about dynamic range anyway, much like stereo companies do about wattage.. (20 watt RMS continues 8 ohms vs 2,000 watts peak 4 ohms etc. about the same thing by the way...in fact.. the 20 watts RMS 8 ohms is probably more). But yes.. 12 stops of dynamic range off the sensor... maybe.. at exact ISO (less important with RAW or BRAW but VERY important if shooting Prores 10 bit). And exposing to how the camera prefers to be exposed for, (above and or below middle grey for different ISO’s for different LOGS for different cameras... and shooting correct exposure like you would with Film or Alexa or to the right for Blackmagic, Sony, Canon etc to clean up the noise in the shadows and mid tones and grade down a couple stops in post). - that’s when 8 bit really started to fall apart for me... though shooting correctly 8 bit log, you have NO wiggle room for mid tones and shadows.. nothing threre.. could only bring down highlights.. ok enough rambling... but yes, would like to hear your thoughts and comments on my ramble at some point.

    Love this man as a blackmagic shooter it pains me to say you're right about the different color spaces and sometimes when doing a CST transform depending on what you pick it completely changes the image but I will say once you get a hold of it the image looks fantastic. Thanks for the video i'd love to see one where you talk about shot matching and different ways to go about matching shots for a commercial or music video. Thanks!

    My sony a6600 has only 8bit so log is maybe not the best way. What about HLG BT2020 ? What is your professional opinion about that?
