Vigan City was founded in 1572 by the Spanish conquistador Juan de Salcedo, a grandson of Miguel López de Legazpi, who was the first Governor-General of the Spanish East Indies. Salcedo established the settlement along the banks of the Govantes River and named it "Villa Fernandina" in honor of King Ferdinand II of Spain.
Under Spanish rule, Vigan City flourished as a center of trade and commerce. It became a vital link in the galleon trade route, connecting Manila, the capital of the Spanish Philippines, to the port of Acapulco in Mexico. The city became a melting pot of various cultures and attracted merchants from China, Spain, Mexico, and other parts of Asia.
The most commonly known source of the city's name is the Biga'a plant, which once grew abundantly along the banks of the Mestizo River, from which Captain Juan de Salcedo derived the city's name (after a misunderstanding with the locals, thinking he was asking the name of the plants).
In 1999, Vigan City was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture. The UNESCO recognition highlighted the city's exceptional value and the need to protect and preserve its cultural heritage for future generations.

My Favorite City in the North. Ito yong city na kapag napuntahan mo gusto mo balikan ulit. Ito yong city na may kakaibang taglay talaga dahil sa pambihirang mga desenyo. Mas nakakamangha tinganan ang lumang mga gusali kaysa mga bago. Honestly, mas maganda ang Vigan sa personal. Mas maapreciate mo siya kapag napuntahan mo personally.

But that’s definitely the people’s perspective who doesn’t know about our architectural and mixture influences but those people who knows the true meaning of our city can obviously think about our city is a Filipino town than calling it Spanish town. And it’s true that our city isn’t soley Spanish at all since we have mixture influences and our mixture is combined with Native Filipino-Chinese-Spanish but it’s still a Filipino overall since it was originated during different eras like Spanish obviously in our country.
@@clockstseed3239 yeah, it's right to know it's history or origin whatever but when it's already ours, it should be called ours. Not calling it "Spanish Town" when it's in the Philippines. Especially western influence was forced on us, unlike Chinese or Malay that were natural through trading or pakikipag kalakalan.
