Really like the tone in this one. Sounded like a country music boss fight
🤣🤣🤣
Difficult Pete has challenged you to a duel at sundown lol
i was struggling to describe it, but country music boss fight is perfect
Hands down the best way to describe this sound. Bravo, bravo.
Like a Rocket League Tournament Finals match in Farmstead.
You managed to turn a bass into a country guitar whilst also playing the bass. I can't even play fingerstyle on bass absolutely amazing

I've tried a lot of slides on bass and finally ended up with a cocobolo wood slide being the one that worked best. Just imagine a reversed fretless thing going on. Give that a shot if you wish to go down that road beyond this video. Cheers.
Wtf is reversed fretless, we wonders? All frets??🙄🤦♂️🤡🤡🤡🤡🤷♂️
@@spanqueluv9er i think the slide is made of wood not metal or glass
@@raymondfarinas3169 I think what he means is on a fretless bass, the string is getting pressed against wood, and with a wooden slide, the string is also pressing against wood, except on the top side of the string instead of the underside.
@@SparrowC1 That has nothing to do with the frets- that’s just using a slide.🙄🤦♂️🤡
@@raymondfarinas3169 Oh my gawd, no it doesn’t.🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤡
He takes the word talent to a whole other level. You're blessed dude
I’m glad this dude is doing well on CZcams. I remember seeing him when he had so little subscribers now people are finally seeing a true musician!
So, I’d like to introduce you to the band. This is Charles and he plays the bass.
That’s it.
Now THAT'S funny!!! 😝🤪😛
Sixty nine likes LMAO
@@Ternovnyk 89 and counting 😂
you're the most versatile musician on this platform by far!
Ichika would like a word
iammodus sends his regards
When you say platform I'm assuming you mean Earth.
@@dougrobinson1171 ichika is fantastic, I don't think he's versatile though. His range just isn't as broad as Charles. Ichika has a very definite sound that's his. Charles has shown he can do funk, rock, metal, classical, soundscapes, scoring, smooth emotional solo compositions, electronic and now apparently bluegrass...
@@wizardvega724 I would argue for Rob Scallon
Some might say this and exaggeration, but I truly believe you are creating the basis for a massive evolutionary jump of the bass guitar. I've played for 20+ years, I've listened to all the greats. You are consistently and continuously extracting new sounds out of a 70 years old instrument. Amazing.
Wait the bass is only 70 years old?
@@saplingdatree4111electric is
@@saplingdatree4111 the electric bass yeah I believe it was first created in the 50s with the fender p bass
@@Nowel22222 it's older but fender managed to popularize it
@@christofferniemonen8872 it's not that older except as a very niche device made in the 30s in a handful of copies, that nobody really used. Even with that into account it's barely 90 years old
Just when you think Charles has seriously done it all, he throws another curve ball into the mix. Absolutely amazing,
Man, this is why I love music. I'm learning bass now and it amazes me the more I dive into learning, the more avenues open up. I hear people making so many different noises from just the one instrument and it excites me to get better so I can play all these different ways.
Keep it up! I'm almost two years in, and the difference from you practicing makes is amazing💕
I play a lot of slide guitar, and I have tried sliders with a Bass. Sounds really fun from experience myself! Great work Charles!
Haha yeah it's a lot of fun 🤣
@@CharlesBerthoud Absolutely!
What about slide on a fretless bass?
@@Imagination-In-A-Box yes!
@@Imagination-In-A-Box it wouldn’t sound diffrent as you don't need a slide to play slide fretless bass/guitar
I've just recieved my first bass, and you were a huge inspiration for me to get one, keep converting people to the B A S S side!
That's great to hear, have fun with it!
I am so glad I've subscribed. I play "basic bass" and I love it. You show me what it can be with the right skilled talent at the helm. Keep on playing showing us what can be achieved.
Bassic bass.
@@CommunistBearFighter I'm a guitar player at heart. Mostly self taught. I can't read bass music and struggle at best to read treble. I play bass like: it's an E chord I play the E note. But along with that I fill in and can hear what notes go along with that. Sort of improvisation. Something I could never do with the guitar. I love it. But seeing you play and getting a feel of what the bass can do does inspire me to stretch myself.
@@glennholmes9705 The best part is that bass players have complete control over what chords are being played. Put a Db under that E chord and now the bands playing a Dbm7 chord
@@glennholmes9705 Yeah he's an awesome player! I'm also really inspired. My comment was just a pun on the word "basic". An example of my utterly disgraceful sense of humour lol.
@@CommunistBearFighter I mean, I laughed 😂
I have been using this technique for ages, it's really amusing to see others finally realise how good it is!
I love how you GO PAST THE FRETBOARD and make it sound so good!
Every time I think there's nothing left for you to surprise me with, you prove me wrong. 🙂
Props to Mark Sandman for doing this back in the 90's with Morphine, and with only two strings!
Yes!!! I remember seeing them on a few shows and was completely blown away by how huge they sounded with just the simple setup they had.
I was looking for this comment thank you!
Sandman is a legend.
One of my all time favourite bands
I was lucky enough to see them play twice
Morphine forever
Lol, pleasantly surprised by the musical direction. When I think of "slide bass", I usually associate it with the sound of the band Morphine. Fantastic job, as usual.
I like the slide bass in Morphine much better than this though. Charles plays amazing as always, nothing against him. But Morphine was just...

Mark Sandman called from heaven, he said you have too many strings on your bass, but he digs the slide thing. ;)
Insano ! Cada vez mais este baixista cria coisas diferentes ! Posso qualificar como um dos melhores baixistas do mundo, pois ele intensamente estuda técnicas diferentes levando o contrabaixo elétrico em outro patamar!
Morphine.
no doubt
Highly agree my fellow portuguese speaker, Charlie tem uma técnica extraordinária, esse tapping dele é de outro planeta.

I’m disappointed that you didn’t do a cool breaking bad thing with that slide Charles…
You were the chosen one! You were meant to bring balance to the bass…!
Wow true, might have to do that at some point!
Now I keep watching the first few notes of the video and being disappointed in myself for not playing Breaking Bad
@@CharlesBerthoud Redeemeth thyself Charles!
@@CharlesBerthoud no no no play some Mississippi burning swamp slide so thick i can feel the mosquitos.
I could not agree more. It would indeed fit quite nicely in the opening or ending.
I've been playing slide bass for years, glad to see it get some appreciation. it takes a special kind of touch to get good slide off the E string.
I’ve been a bassist for forty years and this guy blows my mind. Fantastic!
I was doing that back in the 80s. But without the tapping. That's new, and awesome!
I actually own a slide, and I can confirm that it's really fun use it on bass (of course, I can't sound anywhere _near_ as funky as Charles is in this video).
I feel like The Devil Went Down To Georgia would be the _perfect_ song to use bass sliding.
This please.
I just love the fact you go past the end of the fret board and play notes way higher than you’re supposed to be able to on bass. Amazing
I guess the slide becomes a sliding capo?
That was so incredibly cool and unique. I wasn't sure what to expect but that surpassed my expectations exponentially.
Absolutely amazing. Never heard that done before.
Morphine is in my top three favorite bands!! Two string slide bass, bari sax, and drums. Mark Sandman was incredible!
Too bad I was born too late to see Mark in concert, because Morphine is my favourite band :(
I’ve been doing this for a while for bluesy stuff, I’d recommend it for slower stuff but this was super cool
This guy has shown has shown us how versatile bass can be.
Man you should totally do a Morphine cover, Mark Sandman was the first slide bass I've heard and always intrigued me how much more creative you can become with limitations
That’s so great, love it!!! Bravo!! 😊👏🏻
Virtuoso. Plays off the fretboard next to the pickup. Next level.
Меня поражает Ваше владение фактурой....даже не знаю, что у Вас круче получается-играть или создавать такие шикарные аранжировки...
I really like a glass slide on bass. I also found out that it sounds very cool combined with delay and distortion
This sounds like the kind of music someone would have gone down to the crossroads and sold their soul to be able to play. Absolutely amazing. Great job!
Ah I see you're a man of culture as well!
*Did ya' see Eugene & Willie down there?*

Love the idea of taking the slide beyond the end of the fretboard, giving an extended high end.
Charles you are a gift to us all.
Out standing! He’s the Chet Akins of the bass!!! Nice job.
If you enjoy the sound of slide bass in a raunchy, smokey kinda jazz blues rock vibe, check out the band Morphine, and their (sadly deceased) bassist, Mark Sandman, who plays a two string bass tuned a 5th apart.
I was wondering when I'd find a comment on Mark Sandman, I was starting to get disappointed! That dude was an absolute genius who was WAY ahead of his time.

Great video as always! Sliding on bass sounds terrific, which makes me think.. could you please play a Ukrainian national anthem on it? It contains high pitched sliding notes which will probably sound very cool on bass. This will also help boost our morale. Thank you for your content, lots of love from Ukraine❤
Jesus Christ loves you.
Slava Ukraini.
Bro I just want to say that you are either one of the hardest working musicians I've ever seen or you are insanely talented beyond words. Make sure you use your talent and hard work to glorify God my friend!
This berthoud guy is absolutely phenomenal 😮
Love the content not talking for 10 minutes about how great it is and then give us 5min max of you playing keep it up dude
That is just too cool.I don’ think I’ve ever seen that done before.
Nice mixture of tapping & slide 💪 might be my fav application of tapping ever (!)
Charles you make anything you play on bass sound good
Charles I definitely need more slide bass in my life! That was awesome!
superb! man, you master everything you try
this is the most crazy sounding of everything in the "sounds crazy" series i would love to see more slide
Everyone's talking about the country sound, but no one is talking about that edm feeling bits (when he starts pressing out of the fretboard)
Made me eargasm, thank you very much

Man that was nice
Really cool to see the slide played on bass, I love the deep tone it has
I'm always trying to get that deeper tone on guitar playing slide, this sounded awesome
Now that was simply beyond ridiculously fantastic!
It is crazy what talent can do
OK dude, you got me to subscribe with this one. Totally awesome, Ive got an acoustic bass that bowed from the sun and turned it in to a slide bass, loved riffing on it. Never thought about tapping it as well! Nice work dude, 👍👍👍
Such amazing skills
Okay...Some of your videos titled "crazy" just dont do it for me on my crap speakers, but this....THIS...I can hear! I need more of this. MOAR! Please do more of this!
Hey Charles I have an idea for a future video. Slide in your left hand, e-bow in your right. On a fretted bass, so the slide isn’t redundant.
Really wish your songs like these that are sort of strange and unique were available on Spotify or something. And were longer. You're really talented!
Prodigy plus training plus experience plus creativity = Charles.
Bravo Charles !! c'est juste tres original et parfaitement maitrisé comme d'habitude!!!
I am laughing and loving it all at the same time that sounded so crazy and cool.
