How DEADLY Is The BITE Of The FUNNEL WEB SPIDER?!

WOW! There's something special about a spider that could potentially kill a human being! The venom of these spiders is NO JOKE and when working with them you have to stay sharp and keep focus, there's no room for error. While fearsome and dangerous there has not been a death from these spiders in over 50 years and hopefully there won't be any deaths going forward. Although I've gone toe to toe with the "deadliest" spiders in the US, some more than once, I draw the line at these monstrous mygalomorphs. Did you know all these facts about the Sydney funnel web?

Thank you Jack for using common sense and not free handling the Sydney Funnel Web Spider, because even though we enjoy seeing the effects of the spider bites,we don't want to see you win the Darwin Award for a spider bite.
Darwin Award lol
Why , he don't gotta drive to Darwin , call it the Sydney medal , he'd have earned it , hahaha , DARWIN AWARD HAHA
Hear, hear!
Meh, nobody's died since the introduction of antivenin.
Not that Jack wants to be the first... 🤣
Natural selection! Jack would just shrug it off or not? 🤔
It's so interesting to hear that their venom is harmful to primates but can be handled by different animals such as dogs, etc.
Jack: (handles the most aggressive and venomous spider in the world)
Me: Do it. Let the venom flow through you.
When I was around 16 I got up for a piss and walked bare feet in the dark towards the dunny. I felt something wriggling under my foot, pressed down into the hall carpet, but whatever it was it was quite strong. I turned the light on and to my horror there was a pissed off big male funnel web rearing up at me, minus one leg! Ironically it scurried into the dunny and my shouts woke mum and dad up. Mum actually caught it, put it in a jar and told me to take it to the vets the next day for venom milking. The next day I felt so sorry for him as males only live a couple of years and he was looking for some female action as it was summer. I released him in the backyard where it backs onto dense bush (Faulconbridge, Blue Mountains). Mum and dad thought I'd lost the plot but I reckon there was some seven-legged oolala around the corner for a lucky female in a nearby burrow.

4:42 Mr. Spider just wants a friendly hug, look at how he reaches his arms out!
😂😂
Either a hug or he’s praising his god.
Growing up in Australia - I had a definite attraction to learning about deadly Australian wildlife. Stonefish, Funnel Web, A myriad of deadly snakes, box jelly fish, blue ringed octopus, platypus spur etc etc...
I'm so glad you didn't handle it or let it bite you.
Great vid as always, mate.
Venom isn't just for killing prey... it's a digestive enzyme.
Right, that is part of killing their prey.
They are such an amazing spider,as Jack said a dog or a cat can shake an invenomation off. But as it’s designed for primates it’s extremely dangerous for us of course, and as their toxicity increases in mating season. Scientist’s now believe their venom was designed as a defensive measure and not as a hunting measure to incapacitate their prey.
Absolute beast of a spider. I live in the blue mountains and you can dig them up pretty easily.
Have heard they have the most painful bite out of the spider world. Good on you for not taking a bite. Curiosity killed the cat, but in this case it would be you. Still believe the male Sydney Funnel Web is the most venomous spider on the planet. I'm sure you know that was an adolescent funnelWeb, I really wish you could have found a large one to see how big they get and how powerful they feel when they strike. From what we are taught here in Australia, a male funnel Web will not potentially kill you but will kill you within 15 minutes if you dont get medical help and apply pressure, maybe that has changed from when i was a kid but im pretty sure it hasn't. First time ive seen the channel, Great video mate.
I was blown away by the Blue Mountains when I visited, also found my first funnel Web there .
@gammon1183 beautiful place to grow up in and the wildlife is amazing.
Funnel webs do get big here.
The spider built that fortress of a web thinking nothings gonna get in here just for the log to get flipped up by jack🤣
That’s why they evolved to kill primates 😅😂. They got sick of it
I used to love capturing and studying insects til one day I saw something I had never encountered...it turned out to be a Cow Killer ant and it was huge as I saw it seriously from across my yard(a good 30 feet or more), it was huge(it still seems abnormally big compared later to others I have seen) and fast and stung me like a damn gunshot. I can only imagine what this prehistoric throwback could do, and is the one spider I would completely avoid lol.
I had something similar happen. Worst sting I’ve ever felt but I don’t have much to compare other than a red wasp. Took my breath away. As a 10 year old, I thought that was my end 😂
I've been bit in the pinky finger by a mature male funnel web mygalomorph like those, and it was way more painful than I thought it would be. I was kinda hoping you would try it out but at the same time glad you didn't. That's about where I would draw the line as well. It wasn't quite as bad as Scolopendra Subspinipes, Haplopelma, Cyriopagopus, or western diamondback, but it still sucked. It locked on like a pit bull and wouldn't let go until submerged in a sink of water, kinda like the earth tiger tarantulas did.
The Guinness book of records has the funnel web spider as the deadliest in the world which means more than the Brazilian wandering spider.
The frogs face in the logo kills me everytime. 🐸
Fun facts about (Sydney) funnelwebs:
Larger ones can bite through leather boots/jeans.
They can live to be 25 years old (the females).
These spiders generally can't climb surfaces as well as other spiders (especially smooth surfaces: see the spider in the container he has), so if you're off the ground floor it's pretty much impossible for them to get into your house.
The largest male found was around 8cm/3 inches from foot to foot (about the diameter of an olympic gold medal).
Thank you!! Great fun facts!!
There's absolutely ZERO chance that ANY spider on earth is biting through leather boots. That's an OLD WIVES TALE and is ridiculous.
@jazzabighits4473 Sydney funnel webs are old world spiders they don’t have a lot of what new world spiders have they have bad eyesight and don’t breath as well as new world spiders but they make up with that with their venom
That's the largest Atrax robustus ever found. A close relative, Hadronyche formidabilis, gets larger - a legspan of 155mm is routine, and up to 170mm has been recorded. Note, that species *also* has recorded human fatalities. It's a lot more reclusive, though, and even if you live in their range, it's unlikely to ever see one.
@@logansorenssen You're right. It's also known as the Northern Tree Funnel Web Spider (I was talking about Sydney Funnelwebs in particular)
Isn't the Northern tree-dwelling funnel web spider believed to be more toxic than the Sidney funnel web?
Potentially 👀 perhaps I’ll have to find one.
I'd love to see that video! They are scary!
They are just bigger, which means more venom. Even though they don't have atracotoxin i think they are equally deadly.
@@Death1rock1334scientists say it is deadlier than the Sydney Funnel Web,wether this is due to toxicity or just sheer bad attitude who knows. Unless you’re willing to take a bite from both and record the effects and timing lol.
Amazing to see you in my home country, with my favourite Spider too ^^ awesome video Jack
Fascinating! Thank you for all you do for these little creatures! ❤️
There's a good chance A. Robustus isn't the most venomous of all atracidae. It's just the one that is most frequently encountered by humans. About 17% of people bitten by Atrax Robustus experience a severe envenomation, while Hadronyche cerberea, or, the Southern Tree Dwelling Funnel Web, has a severe envenomation rate of 75%, over 4× that of the Sydney Funnel Web.
Indeed I have heard a few reports about the southern tree dwelling funnel web maybe being the deadliest spider on earth. Perhaps I’ll have to find one 👀
It's much more aggressive which raises its bite count and reputation
@@JacksWorldofWildlife I'd tune into that in a heartbeat!
@@bruceleroy8063 I strongly disagree with that. I have a collection that includes Hadronyche Versuta, Hadronyche Nimoola, Hadronyche Valida, Hadronyche Orange, Hadronyche Barrington Tops, Atrax Southerlandi, as well as a couple of Atrax Robustus.
None of the species are significantly more defensive than the others. If anything, I'd say that the Hadronyche species tend to be slightly more defensive than the Atrax. One of my H. Versuta is probably my most defensive, while a juvenile A. Sutherlandi is the only one I've had who's never reared up.
I heard the the blue mountains funnel web is the worst species
Jack: Australia has no primates other than humans.
Funnle web: Not any more, that is.
Great video jack as normal. Your videos always got something different about them whether its less Hollywood than brave wilderness or something but always love the videos and thank you for bringing so many different species up close to the camera for us
You’re the goat Jack. I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again, you are so easily able to share legitimate knowledge about the animals you are showcasing in your videos. And I greatly respect how much you respect these animals.
Thanks so much!
EXCELLENT video bro. I'm Australian and yeah we gotta deal with these monsters occasionally
Very cool! I was shouting at the phone-don’t do it Jack! lol . I think it’s their attitude plus the potency of the venom that makes that the most deadly spider on the planet. That being said, I’d sure love to see one!
Jack I'm so glad your channel is doing well! Congrats on 125,000 subs!
Your channel was recommended to me by a personal friend. Your sub count was 1000 at the time.
That’s awesome! Glad to have your support 😎
Visited Australia in 2020 just before lock down to go to a wedding and spend three glorious weeks zig zagging from Sydney to Brisbane with three days on Stradbroke.
Anyway family and friends are doing tourist stuff and I'm .......well I'm spider hunting and I got to say it was awesome.
Found plenty of huntsman( shared a shower with one) and other beauties but number one was a good size funnel Web .
I use a piece of grass here in the UK to tickle webs and entice whoever is.hiding out so in Australia I used a longer piece of grass lol 😎
Your passion is inspirational
I wonder if it has something to do with the chemical properties in the prefrontal lobe on primates. I know that the main function of the prefrontal is high cognition. It is odd that this small spider has such an impact on primates and humans. Good to see you still doing videos Jack.
Not sure!
3:19 they are so tiny you would not notice one until close! Poor lil things they are no bigger then a big ant and have a fearsome rep.
I’ve grown to love them and although I don’t have any where I live in FNQ they are amazing phenomenal creatures that exist for a significant reason!!! Go FBs GO!!❤
Bro I’m so glad you didn’t handle it take a bite from that spider. At first, I thought you was gonna take bite, I was screaming no at my screen 😂. Awesome vid bud!
I’m sure it would’ve LOVED to bite haha
He could make sure and take 3 separate bites on the arm like he did the black widow! 💀
This spider just screams 'Come at me!' 💀
Like others, I am very glad you didn't handle or get bitten by this spider. I honestly didn't think the wandering spider could be free handled but the behavior between the Sydney funnel web and the wandering spider was very apparent.
Great video! Awesome spider. Thanks for sharing.
Why am I watching this?? Why? WHY?
WHY, BRAIN!? Why have you brought me here? I have been nothing but good to you for weeks and still you wound me like this.

Great video. Strange venom
Thanks for showcasing this one! You picked your battle wisely in not handling this spider. It almost looked like you were going to take a bite from this thing. Glad you didn't chance it with this one, especially with its temperament and how much of a punch its venom packs.
Gday Jack, great video, great info but what can you tell me about the high plains funnel web, I live in Steeple Flat NSW, and there are plenty of them here, 3 inside and 1 even in my washing basket. Is this version as dangerous?
Another great video
Great video
Jack your awesome! Loved the, "Friendly Neighborhood Spider Man." Comment!!! Lmao
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you, Jack.
I certainly enjoyed your presentation of that impressive arachnid.
Wow you in Australia that's cool.
How deadly?
Yes.
Ive come across some tarantulas that are just as aggressive if not more aggressive than that the funnel web spider. It was supposed to be a docile species of Arkansas Chocolate however he was captured from the wild so I think that was why he was so aggressive. The guy would actually jump at you to try to bite! Never seen such an aggresive spider before... I think he was just a rare mean dude.. He was an excape artist too and got out of his cage and I never saw him again.
Well, Jack, I'm glad they aren't here in Lake City, Fl. I was working in the shrubs next to the house and presto...the next day I saw six spider bites down my right glove area. I never felt the bites, but within two days I was covered head to toe in hives. Oh my God! Did they itch! I was scratching myself bloody. After two visits over two days to the ER, and massive doses of Predisone, and two injections of God knows what, I finally began to recover. I looked like a Leopard, only red blotches. I still work in the woods and gardens. No spider is going to hold me down! Especially since I know they'd really rather not bite, but in my glove, it had no choice.
Any idea what kind of spider bit you?
@@dextermorgan1 There are banana spiders in that area, but I think I would have know a spider that size. It may have been a black widow, I do have them. But there are many different spiders here, so I really don't know. I just don
@@dextermorgan1 I really don't know. But I do have Black Widows, Banana, Spiny Orb Weavers and many others in my 10 acre yard. Just don't want that to happen again!
It always fascinated me that when they stand up they can't see you but they can feel your position based on the air that comes from movement and vibrations. They're nightmare fuel but intriguing creatures
This is a great comment because I just now noticed how "blind" they are when in their pose. I wondered how they could see the "enemy"?... and now I know. Thank you
He handled the Brazilian Wandering Spider and not the Funnel Webb Spider! A bite from either spider is about a sure death!
Not necessarily but both are not a nice time haha
Wow, that is a small funnel web.
For some reason we didn’t see any adults this whole trip. There’s always next time.
I am a biochemist and geoscientist. I am all for educating the public even if it’s about something that they will probably never interact with because it’s from another country but your show is actually informational versus for example brave wilderness which is a truly educational program and well scripted to ensure that nothing unexpected occurs (and if it does BW is always prepared!). Perhaps you might want to keep that in mind when you do your videos. You definitely put in some educational aspects into your show and that is much appreciated, but it needs to be wholy educational which will then entirely encompass the information that you wish to convey and hopefully do so very safely. You do a decent job showing how the reactions that occur in you are well recorded. But your health and safety is critically important and you are but a tiny sample of humans in the US or around the world and therefore is not typical of the vast majority of humans and you may pass along the idea that the envenomation that you experienced is what ALL people of all ages will experience. I do NOT think you do this intentionally, however perhaps you could ensure that with each video and each bite and emphasize it numerous times throughout your video. It would allow you to be equally strong and your videos to be treated as much more educational than informational
I appreciate what you are trying to accomplish but I wonder how many people just in the US tried to copy your actions. Incidentally, i have been bitten by the California black widow twice. The first time was in my mid 30s and I was bitten just above my knee and my body encapsulated the toxin so for two days I had almost no symptoms until I must have scratched it, perhaps in the middle of the night without realizing what I had done and the next morning my knee was Ohling about three times. It’s normal size and I could not put a toe down. I went to my family doctor and he gave me all things, an antibiotic injection, and he wanted me to come back and get several more. I knew I would not need more than the one and true to form, I woke up the next day perfectly fine. Most people who are bitten, depending on where they are bitten, often have the venom encapsulated by their body to be broken down slowly overtime so that you have essentially no symptoms. If only that were always the case! The second time I did not know I was being bitten because it happened at night and it got me just above my elbow. I’m sure it hitched a ride from my garden in the front or the backyard and the sweatshirt was very close to my left elbow, which tends to hang down below the mattress when I sleep, I knew I had been bitten when I woke up in the morning but what was different was that it was around 15 years later so at this time I am a 50 year menopausal female and the only real symptom I had was that I could not straighten my legs and they were so painful. Every step that I took was excruciating and this lasted for two weeks. I had a few of the mild symptoms, but those of course did not concern me. I did not seek any medical attention, knowing, what to do and after two weeks, I woke up one morning, got out of bed and was surprised that I could stand up perfectly straight and walk perfectly normally. Also, my elbow swelled up considerably. I am unable to take anti-inflammatories or NSAID’s, because I had an anaphylactic reaction to every NA available anywhere. That was a shame because I’m sure that my leg pain would have been greatly diminished in length and in level had I’ve been able to do anything about it. On my elbow, I used ice on my legs I soaked and a very warm, or as hot as I could sand it, bathtub. That worked very well. I am concerned for your viewers because they may attempt to try the same thing without the knowledge you have and it would be worth if you could put up on the screen or verbally remind people numerous times throughout your episodes to remind people not to copy you. I have seen your disclaimers so I know you’re attempting to do this, but I think you could do it a lot better. Thank you for your program, because while it terrifies me, I cannot stop watching it out of curiosity. Bless you and please stay safe, always.
Funnel web woke up and chose violence

Not a big fan of spiders but I have always had a sneakey love for this one
What makes me wonder is the similarities in the venom of the Atracidae, Actinopodidae and Macrothelidae, the latter two of which are found in places where ther *are* primates. I wonder which group is actually the most basal?
Not sure! Would be interesting to consider. Australia split off a WHILE ago from Gondwana, so they’ve been isolated for some time
Pretty nuts, you took a Super bite from a black window. That's Legend status as I don't see anyone ballsy enough to do that on youtube lol
thanks Jack for a great video!!! i hope they find out why their venom is so deadly to primates when they don't live around them. i will be staying far away from this spider if i ever visit its home range.
Great common sense on your part not letting this one bite you.
Hi Jack, I was wondering if I could make a request. I see these spiders almost daily here in my house in Ontario, Canada. I'm pretty sure they're called Yellow Sack Spiders or Black Foot Spiders. Some people say it's harmless if bitten and some say the bite can be as bad as a Brown Recluse. I even heard that there fangs aren't big enough to get through human skin. I would love to see a video explaining the common spiders we see in our day to day life.
Thanks!
Aron
They are harmless and once I encounter one I plan on filming a video on them!
Thank God that coral snake on your chest didn't bite you.
Got that right Jack Australian spiders, like the Funnel Web compared to spiders in other countries are no where near as placid, There natural state of being is Pissed Off and aggressive, and worse after they wake up. After they latch on they don't like to let go, it's easier to get Ebenezer Scrouge to let go of a penny than to pry off a Funnel Web.
Cute spider, cuter presenter 😉

Hi Jack! I am loving your videos but I feel that this one, although good, is missing something. I feel that with the discussion of the fangs and the bite of the Sydney funnel web spider there could have been a more in depth explanation on how the venom works on human blood cells or something. Perhaps an idea for a future video if you decide to go further in depth on the Sydney funnel web?
Pretty sure Blue Mountains variety are the most potent glad you pointed out the male is worse most think the female is because of her size
The northern tree dwelling funnel web is likely the deadliest spider in Australia and possibly the world. I’ll have to find it next time 👀
I hypothesize that if you were born and raised in Australia and had a family lineage dating back generations in Australia- you could probably take this bite … just as we Americans on average can typically take the bite of any spider in North America. Just a hypothesis… nothing I want to test out though 😂
😂 idk about all that

Watched a number of your videos. When i seen this one, i imediatly thought no way is he taking a bite. When you said you were drawing the line on this, i said you ripper. Jack lives another day. I remember visiting family on holidays. Dads cousin worked in the bush falling trees and splitting fence posts. We sat down for a sandwich and he said that is a funell web in there. I was young and did not fully understand. Today i would be running. He just kept enjoying his sandwich.

Hi Jack, I am a huge spider enthusiast myself and my dream is to see a funnel web in the wild, what part of Australia did you go to find one? Are there any trails you reccomend? Thank you!
They’re common near Sydney! Any park has a good chance of them! I’d recommend using iNat to find pocket populations.
Of all the "Threat postures " a spider makes... The Funnel Web spider's is by far the worse. Those fangs dripping with venom, the wzy it rears back on its hind legs is just so traumatizing!! I would let someone take one if my limbs before I would even come within a mile of one of those things!😰😖
Hadronyche formidablis is probably considerably worse to be bitten by
Indeed 👀 perhaps I’ll have to find one of those next
Beautiful spiders, but yeah, very glad that you didn't handle it and just educated everyone. Stay safe!
