The late Jonathan Minns of the Brighton Engineerium described the removal restoration and rebuild of this engine during an Industrial Conservation course he gave to staff at the Science Museum London many years ago.
I have a strong suspicion that the engine is not actually running on steam or even on compressed air but just being barred with an electric motor. Hence the dramatic effects added.
That steam engine is in spectacular condition - pity it's not being driven by steam. Where was the alternator? Surely not that little item on the end of the belt drive?

Tha alternator is built into the flywheel, I think.
The little generator at the end will be the exciter for the large one. :)
The alternator is in the flywheel engine and actually the steam was produced in another room. This engine today I think is running on compressed air

They tell stories of technicians that worked there. I guess it didn't end well for one of them
