There are over 200 kagura troupes in Hiroshima Prefecture working to pass down and preserve the rich heritage of the traditional performing art of kagura. Before COVID-19, kagura troupes would perform to large audiences at events, festivals, and even kagura competitions. With international travel still not back to what it once was, we thought we’d bring the magic of kagura to you at home, complete with English subtitles, until the day when travel to Japan is possible.

【Synopsis】
Susano-o-no-Mikoto, the younger brother of the Sun Goddess, Amaterasu Ōmikami, was a troublesome god who caused mischief and chaos across the land. As such, the Sun Goddess hid herself away in a rock cave (iwato) by placing a huge boulder in front of the entrance, plunging the world into an endless darkness and causing turmoil. All of the gods came together at Ama-no-Yasu-ka-Hara to discuss how they would get the Sun Goddess to come out of the cave and bring light back into the world.
It was then that the goddess Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto began to dance a lively dance that delighted the gods around her. Upon hearing the commotion, the Sun Goddess decided to take a peek at what was going on outside. Tachikarō-no-Mikoto, who had been waiting for his chance, pushed the already slightly ajar boulder out of the way, bringing light back to the world as the gods welcomed the return of the Sun Goddess.
【あらすじ】
弟神・素戔嗚男命（すさのおのみこと）の悪業を嘆き、太陽の神・天照大神（あまてらすおおみかみ）は岩屋の中へお隠れになります。すると世の中は常闇（とこやみ）となり、災いが起こり始めました。
そこで、高天原（たかまがはら）の八百万（やおよろず）の神々は再び大神にお出まし頂くため、天安河原（あまのやすかわら）に集い相談をしました。
天宇津女命（あめのうづめのみこと）が舞い踊り、賑やかに神々が楽しむ様子を不思議に思われた大神は、岩屋を少し開かれます。これを待ち構えていた手力男命（たちかろうのみこと）が大岩を押し開き、神々は大神をお迎えし、天に地に光が戻ったという物語です。
