Hello Jessica, I love to see new artist on your channel, and to see an international artist is a bonus. I'm pretty sure that today we can learn a bit more about music and singing technique. A big hug

Jorane is French-Canadian, just like me, we’re from Quebec, which is the only province in Canada that has French as the official language. I’ve been a fan since I discovered her in 1999. She’s been my favorite singer ever since! She sings in French, she chants and also sings in English, but that’s a small part of her songs. Her last album has 0 words: it’s all chanting! She doesn’t get much love on the radio, because as Jess said, it’s not what you typically hear on any radio stations…
The concert I saw in November was just her, her cello and a pianist, playing her last album, which has sooo many instruments and backup vocals…
I hope you guys listen to some of her songs! I would say try songs from Vent Fou, Hemenetset or for the English songs, The You and the Now.
She also did a few Soundtracks!

Hello ! Thank you so much for reacting to this talented Canadian singer from Quebec, "venue tout droit de la Belle Province". 😃
As usual, you said everything about the vocal and instrumental technique ! But I have never seen this rendition of the song, with the cello. Jorane's performances were very special, unclassifiable, full of originality and slight nuances. She plays amazingly the cello, but also the guitare, harp and piano...
The French lyrics are very poetic, but quite difficult, even for a native, and sound a bit like these short japonese poems, haĂŻku. Anyway, there is also a surrealistic influence, like a kind of automatic writing.
There is a kind of "witch aesthetics" too, like in Tim Burton's movies.
In an other rendition of the song, you can see a hare in the videoclip, which is associated with the moon, as a symbol of re-birth. And also some branches of trees at the tips of her fingers : re-birth too. In my opinion, the lyrics deal with a fairy witch or a charmed woman who was lost in a dream, between life and death. The verse you quote, "J'ĂŠtais face Ă  face avec moi-mĂŞme...", as I understand, could refer to the magic power of the mirror.
In any case it is a great song, but a great poem too. Jorane wrote it herself ! And the last verse (I believe in life) is the most beautiful.
Sorry,Jessica : definitely too complex to be analysed in one hour... 😃

Hello Jessica. I take this French -Canadian opportunity to point out to you one of the greatest French voices in the 20th century, according to the critics. This is the most iconic song of Barbara, "L'aigle noir", she composed and performed it in 1970. In my humble opinion, it would be at least equal to Edith Piaf's best performances. Just listen to it...
