There's been quite a few I've been on the fence about for a while, so today I thought I'd bring 10 of them over to chat to about with you, and make some difficult decisions! 🌱

My worst nightmare was Alocasia stingray. I started to suspect that it produces spider mites, naturally giving birth to them.
Its so nice to hear that your finding the plants you no longer interested in a new home with good care. There are many reasons why to change the type of plants you like; it just happens and sometimes needs just change
we need more plant decluttering, no guilt!

Friendly reminder to whoever needs to hear it: your mental health is far more important than a plant’s life! Some of my plants chose violence over the winter and just decided to get a hard reset for no apparent reason. Some already bounced back and are very exciting, some I was happy to see gone. I could probably nurse them back to life, but I just don’t have the mental space for their nonsense.

I do garden work and care for my house plants on one simple principle: Anything that survives me can stay, the rest may go. This has led to quite a number of plants to land in the bin over the years (and is the reason why I would never pay more than 15 bucks for a plant), but while I have an interest in both things as a hobby I will not let it overtake my life. So if a plant decides to be difficult, it is free to go.
If you want something similar to Aloe that can grow outdoors in the UK, look into Agave. Some species are cold hardy to below -20 C and even much lower than that as long as they’re kept dry. You can easily keep them on a balcony as long as you shield them from excessive rain.
Yes good idea. I got a couple of Agarves and they grow good in the UK on a balcony. I've bought fleece covers for mine for winter and moved them closer to the wall so they don't get as wet.

You said it perfectly in reference to your Aloe Vera. One needs sufficient space to accommodate this plant because they grow huge. I had to get rid of mine.

I have one, that I've had for years, that I got from the grocery store. She's massive. I've chopped her back, and new plants grew from where I've chopped lol. I named her Medusa. I've gone through phases of loving and hating her, but somehow I can never get rid of her, and I've been close to it. My heart just can't do it lol.
Aloe plants can be tricky. They get massive, are spiky and take up so much room. I was gifted a tiny baby aloe 13 years ago when my son was born. Every time I look at it, I’m reminded of a time when my teenagers were babies. Sentimental plants are the worst…no matter how inconvenient they are impossible to get rid of. 😊
Hi Claire, watching this episode does make me feel a bit better I fall out of love with some plants I’ve wanted for a long time. Or they keep croaking on me. Slowly I’ve started to learn more about the ones I’m really loving and giving away ones I’m not so keen on anymore. It’s ok.
I downsized a few weeks ago, and then restyled a few that I loved more after the new look. Couldn't imagine carrying for 300 plants in my 1-bedroom, so I'll stick to "it I want to buy multiples, they have to go into a group terrarium" for the foreseeable future.
It’s okay. Don’t feel bad. I usually give away plants that need too much work or plants that need too much light that I can’t provide, etc. As soon as the weather gets nice, I put a take me sign on them with the care they like, etc. and put it in front of my building. I would go back outside about one hour later and they are all taken.
I can really relate! Although it took me far too long time to admit to myself that it is completely fine to fall out of love 🌿
I enjoyed my Rhaphidophora decursiva much more once the splits started. It looks so much nicer.
My friends and I all grow the dorayaki/ silver blush and mine would always do a similar thing to yours, where the leaces would start to deteriorate randomly (keep in mind I have over 30 different anthurium, but okly this one was doing this)... I found the silver blush needs consistant moisture... it doesn't like drying out and if you water it after letting it dry out, then the eczema from the water shoking the roots will lead to deteriorating leaves... I recommended no drainage with a leca layer at the bottom and a chunky organic mixture, like how ecuagenera keeos their plants in... pon I find dries unevenly and the plant does the sale thing... or do pon, but keep a moss layer at the top to improve the moisture in the substrate....
Omg! What I would give to be in the UK and have that large aloe Vera, mine of 5 years just died last week due to fungus disease and made me so sad 😞 but I do understand where you’re coming from with wanting more room, they do take up a lot of space once they’re huge
Whenever I need to downsize I just put the plants on the curb. They are gone in a day. I definitely have fellow plant lovers in my neighborhood. I have a massive collection, so the amount of cuttings I end up with from trying to get perfectly variegated plants can be extremely overwhelming. A few years ago I put like 20 albo monstera, albo syngonium, jose bueno, and ring of fire cuttings at the curb and woman actually came to my door and made sure they were free. She was stoked to get them and I was relieved to have them gone. It’s a win/win and these wonderful plants don’t end up in a landfill.
I love that you don’t sell but just give those plants away. The way things used to be!
@@megshush My husband wishes I’d sell them lol! But I just know I’ll never get around to it. I’ll put it off. So its better for my mental health and clutter level to just let ‘em go right away.
Oh wow that’s so amazing of you! I’ve seen so many vids of people like you who just give away to the neighborhood and I wished I lived closer to someone who did that 🤣

Ha ha. I do that with dvds but i think all of my baby jade plants will be heading that way very soon.
For the aloe Vera, (ESPECIALLY one of that size and maturity) as long as it doesn’t scorch in the sun or actually freeze in the cold, it’ll be fine on the balcony! I left mine out all winter and covered it with frost cloth on the really cold nights!
I'm all the way in the US and wish it were closer so a few possibly could be passed on to me. I live in a nursing home so I have a extremely limited budget to grow my plant collection , but I'll eventually get there. I love your videos and all the useful information.
Cursiva IS a crawler and that is a new leaf. Put it in rectanglular pot and enjoy. Each of those nodes will happily root in soil. I have 2.
Glad you said it. Mine does the same and popped a random leaf like that then I started a light behind it for a sanseveria.
I am considering giving up with syngoniums. Every winter I have to struggle with thrips. They look unhappy until they regrow in summer but next winter same old story starts.
Hi Claire! You can use your aloe medicinally. It's good for sunburn, rashes, skin creams & hair rinses. It has so much value as a medicinal plant. You can even take it internally. Your aloe is a beautiful plant! I would swap but I'm in the USA. I am new to your planty CZcams. I enjoy your enthusiasm, energy, and knowledge.♡
You should let the leaf sit in water tho before using it medicinally.
I used to really love my colorful, gorgeous croton petra. I had it for nearly 4 years. It grew tall and even more colorful...but it never failed...at least 3-4 times a year, I was battling spider mites and falling crispy leaves. How in the world, the plants on either side of it did NOT get spider mite, I do not know. I loaded it with beneficial mites...and AS SOON as those little helpful ones "expired" I was washing, drenching, wiping spider mites off it again. One of my daughters wanted it, but I could not bring myself to let her have it, because I knew she wouldn't persist on the on going mite battle, and soon all her plants would be covered. I actually walked it outside, DUMPED the whole plant, and all of it's soil into the garbage dumpster that was being picked up that very day. Then I scrubbed & sanitized the beautiful glazed pot it was in, and have already used it on a huge beautiful climbing pothos. Now, when I walk past the table my croton used to occupy, I actually breathe a sigh of RELIEF! (and so far...no spider mite visitors) 😉🕷
I have not been bothered with any bugs this year & I put it down to sprinkling diatomaceous earth on the potting mix - worth a try for anyone having problems. I had a bad year last year with spider mites. Nothing this year 👍
Crotons are spider mite city! Everyone I've ever met who has had a croton has had spider mites, it's like they're required by law or something. I bought one on clearance for $5 a few months ago and it's been living hell. If I don't keep up on insecticidal soap treatments the mites keep coming back. I wish I never bought this plant 🫤
Bottom line, plants are our hobbies. We are plant collectors. Just like in our closets, we have pieces we love and that excite us, and when a piece no longer excites us, we donate it to someone that it will excite. We are constantly changing and growing and our tastes and views are, too. A plant not exciting us or “doing it for us” isn’t a bad thing, it’s just naturally going to happen. Just like our clothes.
And isn’t that such an awesome thing because we can share things we love with others, we can experience new things, we don’t have to be in the same place with the same things all of our lives.

Love it! It's great to see that you have the same problems and feelings that we all do. I watched a video by a botanist and researcher who went on a quest in Borneo to find different types of Amydrium and even in their natural habitat they had dried, splitting leaves that, if I had it in my house, I'd pitch it in the trash. Perhaps we are all seeking perfection and it's just not possible. Of course, I bought one online, but it's tiny and I later read that this genus is hard to grow and not worth the trouble (SIGH!).

I'm starting to notice that I bought plants because I love what they might look like after years. Unfortunately, the young plants are often not as desired and do not grow quickly enough. This is something to keep in mind when purchasing plants. Do I have the time, the space and the will to wait until the plant looks the way I want it to? i habe to stop this way of thinking
Love the video as always. Was just going to say I've had an aloe vera on my balcony all through winter and autumn and it's still doing well. Although we have a south facing balcony and we tend to get a lot of sun when it is sunny. But it hardly has been sunny in cardiff through the winter and autumn and its still doing well. I used one of those pots that have a compartment at the bottom for it to store water and it seems to prefer that pot than what I had before.

I would maybe take that aloe and pot up one o the pups to keep, just because if you DO get a burn it is very nice to have some aloe to put on it!
When I started plant care, I was interested in seeing how they grow. I actually started with succulents, and I was always interested in propagating them. I've propagated a few and, unfortunately, that specific interest has passed. I gave away a large chunk of my collection and some I simply threw away.
Admittedly, I got too many plants all at once and I was not able to enjoy them as I had hoped. Getting rid of a few actually helped in that way. Took a few cuttings and dropped them in prop jars and threw away the rest.
I decided that I will just throw away plants that don't bring me joy anymore.

Have you tried growing your portodora in hydro? That may make it easier to keep it pest free. And diatomaceous earth works well I think. You can put it in soil as well but you have to let the soil dry out well between watering for it to work well in the soil. Ant plants I have I spray everytime I water them. I keep some spray handy for those at all times. You can also use diatomaceous earth as a spray too.

Sorry to hear you are not enjoying your Drimiopsis maculata. It was my first plant ever, and I have been growing it non-stop for almost 25 years. The bulbs I have come from the first I was given by a schoolmate when I was 12 year old! It's actually super easy to grow and quite resistant. I live in London and I have mine in a terracotta pot, with normal substrate and a bit of vermiculite, close to a South facing window. If you decide to keep it and it flowers, the flowers have a faint Nivea cream smell.

I usually just migrate them outside (I'm in Sydney and our winters don't get anywhere near bad for tropical plants outdoors). I guess technically I don't get rid of them, they just become outdoor garden plants 🤭
Claire, have you tried to put your huge favorite plant that keeps getting pests on it, in just pon, NO DIRT???
My aloe vera can be outside when night temps are above 55F. I keep it on my patio under a tree. It seems to need part shade. But our summer's get very hot. Maybe in the UK, it would be fine without a tree for shade.
Hmm. I grow a lot of anthurium in Ambient where I am, but I think you should try your Dorayaki in Pon!

I got a couple of Aloe varieties to do an outdoor arrangement last summer. They were sold as outdoor plants and they grew great through the summer on my balcony. In october i thought I better bring them in and they werent happy with the change sadly. You might find the same happens if you try your Aloe Vera out there.

I'm not sure if you still have the aloe, but it would totally survive outside. I had a massive one that survived three awful winters and then just thrived as soon as the sun was back :)
Dang, i just came home from a 10 km bike ride to get a cheap White Princess. Collapsed on the couch to watch this, and the princess is the first one mentioned. 😅
I get it though. I have a princess already, that i actually got together with a Wizard, and the Princess just looks a bit sad in comparison. The variegation isn't as pretty, and it's only about half the size of the Wizard, even though they have been getting the exact same conditions and care.
This new one looks a lot better though, so i have hope yet.
You have probably rehomed your aloe vera now, but what's worth, mine has been living outside my front door in London, for about 8-10 years (I forget how long ago I bought a rooted pup in my local corner shop). I had to cull the literally dozens of pups growing everywhere in the pot and beyond it a few months ago. They are almost unkillable.
I got a place in the forest I take my plants, give them the best home you can and let them find thier own way. :)
I’m getting rid of my Aloes too. They just take too much space I’d rather use for cacti. They aren’t really made for the pot life. They are a fantastic landscaping plant if you have the climate for it.

Claire, you might want to try watering your Portadora with a systemic insecticide once a month. I can’t remember if they are available in the UK or not, but that is something I do with a few of my Alocasia.
Definately you can place your "Aly" Aloe Vera outside on your balcony during the warm weather months... then bring in for the cold time in your area. I have 4 "Aly" Aloe Veras... one of them currently has a BEAUTIFUL bloom! Thank you for your AWESOME plant videos! You inspire me to learn more and to be a better plant parent.

I had an aloe that i rescued from a chill cabinet at a grocery shop,eventuality i had it in a window box, it turned to brown mush at the first frost. Decursiva wet sticks take a long time! that said I've got mine rooted to a wooden plank and its putting out big fenestrated leaves albiet it does after its mid may wake up.
Hello Claire, Its heartbreaking to see you struggle to let go of some of these plants. Could you just keep two of those Anthurium babies, and give away the rest?

Claire that aloe vera can survive on your balcony i have one and it with stands the rain cold, the heat. Its worth a shot.
I have a Rhaphidiphora DeCursiva. I won't be getting rid of mine as it is perfect for the place I have to grow it, but it is very slow growing. It took 2 years to fenestrate, but now it has and it's pretty. and easy to grow. I added more light and more humidity and it's now happy, but it was a struggle. If you don't like it, go ahead, get rid of it. It's not necessary to keep every plant you try.
Did you ever think about like plucking lower leaves of the aloe? Making a stem/trunk like situation? Maybe fall in love with it a different way!
"I didn't feel the way I thought I'd feel about it" is the story of my life 😂😂😂 I relate to that so well. There's been so many plants that I've seen that I was like oh my gosh I have to have that. I get it and I feel like ehh. 🤣 and the plant ends up finding a new home lol

I'm trying to get rid of my Pothos Lemon Lime. Since I got it last year it has had always thripes. Nothing was sucessfully what I've done so far. This video was very helpful because it is no shame to be done with a plant.

.. Have you changed the soil and cleaned the roots??.. Other wise you will just keep having those little bast, in 4 sizes.. Egg, pupps, larvae and adults.. And they do lay a couple of 100s eggs at the time.. An adult trip is alive for about 7 days.. So within 10 days you'll have 😳 way many basts.. And they don't stay with only one plant.. And they love moist and wet soil too 🥺..
my dorayaki is perfect. It’s stunning. but you need a layer of moss on top so that new roots can grow. and I grow mine in very chunky aroid mix (just bark, coco chips, perlite, pumice). and yeah, water like every 2-3 days. it looks like you keep yours dry for longer than u should. these plants in nature have exposed roots and it rains on them every day.
anyway, hope it helps. Dorayaki is such a stunning plant if looked after correctly
My raphidofora decursiva definitely wants to crawl. I've been trying to force it to climb the moss pole on many occasions and it just doesn't work. It wants to crawl. Also, a while back I got a cutting of a beautiful mother plant from a lady at a plants swap and she said that once she started treating her raphidofora like a crawler the leafs started to become bigger and bigger so yeah

Aloe Vera is a pseudo desert plant. It wouldn't be successful in the UK in any season but summer, I think. It has propagated itself, though...you could keep one of her pups. But it will eventually be a beast too...💜
I wish I was your neighbor I would take in all those orphan plants because most of them are actually on my wishlist
Aloes like the great outdoors in the summer time but they like it a bit shady to be happy. I completly stow watering mine in the winter and keep it very cool at about 10-15c in my little unheated storage room with a roof window for as much light as possible👍

My Decursivas doing the same, I chopped and propped last year, I got it in a hanging planter, it didn’t hang, it took almost a year to develop roots, and I only get a leaf every 5 months, or not at all on one, trying to sell them online I had no luck , I guess people already know it’s a slow weird grower. I have the same 1/4 grown weird end on two of them as well, it looks like it’s pushing out new growth and then stops and the lil tip dries and dies 🤷♀️

For me it's dracaena anything. Every single one I've ever had ends up with fried, brown tips -- especially the marginatas.
I have a Rhaphidophora decursiva growing in a 5" pot. I too thought it was a crawler based on how it has been growing. The leaves are fenestrated and the plant keeps giving me new leaves. Questions: What if I don't put it on a pole, what can I expect? Can I try to grow it as a crawler? Or should I just chop it and start again? I've had it for one year.
I've had plants that just wouldn't thrive but after months they would just blossom with life. And I have some really fussy plants that are so needy. Saying that I think I understand.
My big Alocasia Dark Star is the same with pests. It just always has spider mites. No matter what I do, it always has pests. It’s insane. I have so many alocasias and this is the only one that acts like this!
Me going in the garden looking for something to get rid of and decluttering. Me hours later, ending up with more plants from propagating. How do I fix this problem lol? 😂 It’s not easy to part ways with plants. 😂😂

How cold does it get where you live in the UK. Where I live it gets into the low 40s F in the winter and my aloes do fine outside
My Decursiva isn't doing anything for me, either... It doesn't grow well and it's a bit of a runner for me, also.
