As you believe there was nothing more than a musician utilizing an instrument to convey their knowledge of music theory, scales, and rhythm.. I inferred feeling and emotion. Some of us understand a deeper meaning from music and hear the parts of music that go beyond what's written on a 5 line staff. Maybe it's just something that comes from years of experience.

I love how he intermittently quotes their own music in his solos (Animal Spirits in this case), and also so many funk classics (Sir Duke in this case) and just throws that in with all his tasty improv. That's how you know they are playing music for musicians.
