    I love the original Marvel comics. I was born in '88, but G1 is still by far my favorite era, and I've collected all of those Classics TPBs. It's kind of a matter of pride that I didn't spend exorbitant prices to get them, lol. I've still never read any of the UK-only stories because those TPBs were discontinued long ago.

  • @thepartworkscomicsreader9488

    Correction on the Hachette. While they came out in a pretty random order the issue number (sticker on the front) wasn't the same as the volume number (on the spine, shelf order). On the shelf they go Marvel (following the UK order with UK stories where they fit between US stories), Dreamwave, IDW with only some odds and ends out of order at the end that weren't part of the original 80 book run but part of the 20 book extension. A couple of thing not ideally placed but it's all pretty much in reading order.

    • @chriswing7466
      @chriswing7466 Před rokem +1

      This is true - they miss out TFUK #93 though! Not a key story by any means, but even so...

    • @thepartworkscomicsreader9488
      @thepartworkscomicsreader9488 Před rokem +2

      Well I've kept my Titan printings as well, partly for the original colours rather than the redone IDW files, but 93 is included in the Second Generation volume of UK material from Titan. I don't have a full set of the B&W digests of the later material and some of those have gotten pricey, now have all the stories with colours by JP in the Hachette volumes of course but have the nostalgia for them in the original format. Still need to replace the last of the original run of UK annuals since my original copy has never turned up, again pricey when it shows up now, might have to grab the IDW Rarities floppy just to have a placeholder copy of Another Time and Place.

      @@thepartworkscomicsreader9488 Yes, me too! 😁😁 I've been slowly recollecting the original issues - I now have most of those issues with the free gifts still intact... including #1! The ones I had as a kid got destroyed. :(

    • @CraigGrannell
      @CraigGrannell Před rokem +1

      Things are still the wrong way round in some books though, due to them wanting to prioritise the meatier story. It’s annoying. And the colours and repro are terrible. I went back and forth regarding selling my Titan editions. I think had IDW not cancelled the UK classics books (despite their atrocious repro), I’d have kept them.

  • @chrisdaugherty8265

    Really wish the next publisher would do a Marvel US/UK numerical order hardcover series that is not super difficult to get in the US.
    Edit: those William Johnson issues were so beautiful. I love the Ratchet camping issue so much.

    • @CraigGrannell
      @CraigGrannell Před rokem +1

      If they do, hope it’s better than Hachette’s partwork, which despite being edited by the bloke who wrote most of it STILL had stuff in the wrong order. Quite how they all managed that, I’ll never know. (And the repro was bloody awful, using the new and horribly botched IDW recolouring disaster.)

    • @jameskiely3093
      @jameskiely3093 Před rokem

      I've said somewhere else I would love Marvel to get back the publishing rights so we could have these issues remastered properly in an omnibus.
      I would love the US issues to be collected the way they were originally printed in the UK title i.e modified to incorporate the events of the British stories. I don't know if it's even possible.
      One can only dream.

    This was a fun walk down memory lane. My first issue was #36. I cut out the subscription page and sent it in. I remember those subsequent issues getting >gasp< folded and dropped through our mail slot.
    Then I discovered comicbook stores in ads in those Transformers comics. I called one of the stores listed and asked if they had Transformers back issues. I had my parents drive me out to Eagle Rock (about an hour away) and I bought Transformers #1 for what seemed like a lot of money >gasp< $10. Eventually, I caught up on all the back issues.
    I've been tempted to have all those issues bound.

    Good work posting these. I don't have the compliations because I still have my collection of US and UK Transformers comics from Marvel (In Canada, we could get both. I think it was the ideal place for it-the UK collection was sold all over the commonwealth, but in other places, buying the US comics was harder (either because of distance like in Australia and New Zealand), and/or because of governmental reasons (South Africa didn't have a lot of different media from other lands because Black people were in positions of authority in said media and apartheid South Africa didn't want people seeing that)
    One thing that the compliations neglect to include are letters to the editor. I always loved reading those-especially in the UK comic where you got to write to a character. (I remember writing to Soundwave a few times as a kid, but what I didn't realise is that with the weekly UK comic, all letters came from the British isles simply because there was no time to wait for mail to arrive from oversees (this was pre-internet, and it probably took over a week for mail to go from Canada to England, so the next issue was already written and printed)

    I can't recall if it was ever explained why the US never used the movie characters? Their loss was the UK's gain, as those 'future'/time-jumping stories are some of the very best Transformers comics of all time.

    • @SJHFoto
      @SJHFoto Před 2 měsíci

      I think that by that time Bob was losing his mind just including all the characters he had to include. For one thing, Simon Furman (UK writer) had a weekly comic so he had more of a chance to include other characters (breaking it down, the main feature in the UK comic was half the size of a US comic, and with the reprinting being done half the month, he was basically writing the exact same amount, but he could include other stuff since the contemporary times was covered in the US), and he also was more excited by the characters (being younger and not as wore out) then Bob who this was always "just a job" for him

    Transformers Marvel US / G.I. Joe was Marvel Earth-91274 and TF Marvel UK / Action Force was Earth-120185).
    US issue 43 (UK issue 180-181) was a adaptation of the cartoon episode The Big Broadcast of 2006 which features some of the movie cast. When the UK reprinted it they used a framing story (as a prologue to Space Pirates) the story was shown to be in Wreck Gar's imagination so not to conflict with UK continuity.

    Transformers UK was my childhood. To say it has a special place in my heart is an understatement. I remember my life's events from that period in terms of what issue number was out. I have no interest in any Transformers comics that don't relate to the US/UK continuity or not written by Furman.
    When you look at other UK liscenced comics at the time the difference is amazing. Pretty much every other publisher of UK liscenced material created childish forgettable material.
    Ian Rimmer (the UK Transformers comic editor from issue 22 to at least 100) doesn't get enough credit. He was visionary enough to allow Furman to write stories that were unlike what pretty much every publisher was creating for their liscenced titles.
    I reread the comics from time to time and appreciate the jokes and references I didn't get at the time.
