  • Just finished The Cuphead Show and I was really thrilled when I saw these cartoon references. I still haven't seen anyone talk about them yet so I made this compilation of some of the ones I spotted.
I know this is a pretty random video but I love Cuphead so much so just bear with me.

WHA? How can ANYONE be a PINK ELEPHANTS Enthusiast? They Scared Me Half to Death when I was Little. I Had a Small Night-Light Plugged into the Wall just down next to My Bed and it wasn't very Bright. I SWEAR I Saw what Looked like a Pink Elephant Peeking-Out from Behind My Dresser Mirror. It Creeped Me out so Much I put a Lamp on My Dresser which Lights Up My Bedroom enough that it's Bright but not too Bright. More of a Light Golden Fluorescent Glow Brighter than a Kerosene Lamp. I Still Sleep with My Dresser Lamp on just as a Force of Habit. Trust Me. when You're around 3 to 5 Years Old those Things can Scare You so much They'll Scare You until You're around 9 - 11 and Finally get over the Fear and can Finally Rest... (Also other than the Pink Elephants from Dumbo I Scared to Death of the Heffalumps and Woozles from Winnie the Pooh. Which is Ironic because My Little Wall Night-Light had Lumpy from Pooh's Heffalump Movie and also I had Never seen Lumpy in that Movie cause I Only Saw Him in Pooh's Heffalump Halloween Movie...)

The game had a combination of both Fleisher and Disney styles. Cuphead and Mugman are heavily based on Mickey and Oswald, while many of the enemies are based on Fleischer cartoons. So I guess that's why the cartoon has references from both styles too.

I wanted the skeletons to do spooky scary skeletons so bad. These types of cartoons are so special because of how creative and expressive they are. I love how it’s making a comeback with the Animaniacs new stuff, Looney Tunes, Cuphead, and how Steven Universe had the amazing Spinel. This animation style is just so dope and trippy (seriously watch some of it when drunk/high it’s awesome) and is sooo much better than CG. Sure, what Disney makes now is great with how realistic it is but at the same time, I don’t want realistic. I love the slapstick and craziness of cartoons. In the Devil’s intro song, I can’t be the only one who also noticed the reference to “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” from the classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas when the devil is “slithering” along the floors? I know it’s not the golden age of animation but it felt very much inspired by said scene.

As someone who right now is going to animation school, I just gotta say how much I adore all these references. And just how *important* these old animations were to animation history and progress. My teacher (when we had history class) showed us basically of these. So seeing cuphead reference them is like giving a big loveletter to all of animation overall. ❤❤

The only one I actually caught on my first viewing was the Skeleton Dance reference, because I've seen that short dozens of times lol.
Although, and I might be reaching here, I really like to think the part moments before that where Cuphead and Mugman we're opening the doors the ghost were pulling up was a reference to The Beatles Yellow Submarine. Because the first one they opened showed a train coming at them before Cuphead slammed the door, and there was a part just like that in Yellow Submarine.
Idk that was just what I immediately thought of when I saw it lol, and yellow submarine is one of my favorite movies

Gosh damn this show is amazing it feels like animation at its roots I love the new stuff too. It’s just great to have variety in your life. And it just proves your show doesn’t have to be linear or whatever you call it for it to be good. That’s part of what made the 2000’s cartoons so fricken good. I love a linear structured show too, heck Gravity Falls is my favorite show of all time. But I love animation in general. And Brad Bird once said that Animation isn’t a genre. It’s an art form, to perform genres in.(Something like that on the Incredibles commentary)

At the beginning of the video, the saxophones and violins are a reference to an old cartoon, in which a young saxophone boy falls in love with a violin girl, but their respective countries do not get along.
It's a bit like Romeo and Juliet in fact.
Besides, we can see a saxophone character with a hat like in the old cartoon in several episodes.
In the episode of the king dice show, there is a rabbit with blue shorts which could be a reference to Oswald.
I really think there are many other very subtle references in this great cartoon that is the cuphead show!
Can't wait to see season 2!
