Besides his friends, Marlene was the only family he had left. The love for his daughter was the best thing out of this remake and the original. The voice actor did a fantastic job and was perfect for Barret.
For me its specifically when he calls for Wedge, when his voice breaks part way through it. Chills every time, to keep the imperfect delivery is what makes it so perfect

Am I the only one who ships Barret and Elmyra? They’re both widowers, both have an adoptive daughter, and they both seem to understand one another pretty well. After Aerith dies, Elmyra will be all alone and her only comfort will be Marlene. I think the two of them should hook up and take care of her together.

Marlene is without question Barret’s most humanizing aspect. If I’m honest, I don’t think he believed in the whole eco part of his terrorism. He just hated Shrina for orphaning the girl, or so he thinks in the OG.
Or certainly sees that she is special and such: as a child, she could also have some limited connection to the Lifestream that one just grows out of and she could tell Aerith had a deeper link.
