  • Today we learn structural analysis and how to analyze hinges in structural members. We determine if the system is determinate or indeterminate, how to use equilibrium equations, as well as how to use influence lines. A great PE \ SE exam review problem!

I appreciated the influence line explanation, and think it's a good idea to use a mix of tools in the PE, but the shear in the hinge was a bit muddled. Breaking the beam into 2 with equal and opposite reactions at the hinge seems to work best for me

Just a quick clarification: your 3 equations don't come from your standard 3 (x-dir, y-dir, moment) since you've eliminated all x-direction calculations. You'd be back down to 2. But that hinge gives you an extra equation to use that brings you back up to 3 after all.

half way through video, and confused. When sum moments at a hinge only look at one side of the hinge. I never heard of that before. amazing

but why ...."the hinge". Going to put it out there, hopefully to be corrected if wrong, but the use of modeling with a hinge is to 1) model a splice that cant transfer moment in a long spliced beam 2) model plastic hinge points in earthquake structures (which would be where?) 3) to annoy the heck out of students
