  • We get a feel for the flavors of a few of the famous fountains of Saratoga Springs.
    Saratoga Spa State Park’s carbonated springs have been renowned since the 18th century; the Mohawk people indigenous to the region believed in their healing powers, and to this day mineral baths and spa treatments are offered to visitors of Roosevelt Baths in this huge state park in New York. Locals collect mineral-rich spring water from deep underground.
    Deep layers of shale cap off pockets of carbonic gas that push water through cracks past mineral soils, carrying a variety of trace elements and minerals to the surface as springs and spouters near Geyser Creek. Mineral deposits called Tufa build where the waters evaporate.
    Public Pools, Picnics, Pavilions, Performances; Visit the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, the National Museum of Dance, or the Saratoga Automobile Museum.

    I enjoyed this and your reactions to the various water samples. Mineral water is so underrated as an easy way to stay healthy. The dissolved minerals are trace minerals that our body needs. One reason why spas developed around natural mineral springs and why Native Americans valued them The water is fantastic for drinking though a little goes a long way. Think of it as a liquid vitamin pill rather than something you would drink everyday. The locals are smart to take advantage of the free mineral water. It is also fantastic to water your garden with since the trace minerals are easily available for the plants. Thanks for sharing your adventure with us.

      Love this! I totally agree! Some of the stronger ones would be difficult to drink a lot of 🤣 but I LOVE sparkling mineral water and could drink Polaris or Tallulah all the time. We even recently installed a sodastream in the van, and since we eat low-carb or carnivore most of the time, we make our own fizzy electrolyte beverages with Redmond’s Real Salt (lots of trace minerals) as well as potassium and magnesium. I totally get why whole civilizations used to spring up around access to good water and salt/mineral deposits.

    Not sure I'd sample these springs.... Many of the locations contain highly radioactive radon 226 levels well in excess of a hundred times the permissible EPA limits for radionuclide contamination in drinking water. A glass isn't going to kill you, and fortunately the radiation levels correlate strongly with total dissolved solids (Kitto et al., 2005, J. Enviro. Rad.), and therefore general repulsiveness in taste. So the more repellent a particular spring like Orenda (243 pCi/L or 48X the 5 pCi/L EPA limit), the less likely people will be to drink from it. Anyway, presenter dude was pretty hot, so ended up watching the whole vid 👍🏻.

      No worries, we’re still alive 2 years on! Makes sense that the bad taste = worse for you. Our bodies are pretty smart, eh? I agree he’s hot and I will also keep watching because of that 😅😅😇 Thanks for tuning in.

      @@BeyondIntention Update 4 months later.... I stopped at the park on my way to a vacation in the Adirondacks, aaaaaand I sampled all the springs 🤣
      Most of them were truly horrendous, and indeed the radiation levels as measured with a Geiger counter correlated more or less perfectly with the undrinkability of any particular spring. The gas coming out of the "breathing tube" at the Hayes spring was the most interesting, as measured with an "Airthings" monitor, it contains well over a hundred times the background level of radon in my basement! Thanks for the vacation detour idea!

      Wow they dont tell you about the radioactivity!!! how do you know?? and how does it get so radioactive?? also, what are ways I can stay aware in the future and measure levels in my own environment? these are life skills no one teaches

    • @Muonium1
      @Muonium1 Před 8 měsíci

      @@glitterrgirrl It was in the news a lot first in the 70s, but then by the 90s largely forgotten about, and today, well I didn't see anything about it in the park at all. I have a geiger counter and it would easily detect the high levels around very mineralized springs like Orenda. Like I say above, if you're only drinking the "sweet" springs that taste like fresh spring water, there's no risk at all, the radiation was undetectable, it's only a risk on the extremely salty and highly mineral rich springs, which in my opinion are so horrible tasting they're barely drinkable anyway. The radiation is from dissolved radium and radon in the water taken up as it passes through the ~450-500 million year old Ordovician and Cambrian shale deep below which contains significant amounts of uranium and thorium.

    Did any of the water taste like a garden hose? I have the best memories as a kid drinking out of our garden hose ..tasted like metal but boy howdy was it good!

    • @BeyondIntention
      @BeyondIntention  Před rokem +1

      Haha Just my inner Steve Irwin coming out. Garden hose, no, but the older installations did have a hint of old pipe going on - I suspect with new plumbing they'd improve a bit. The newer steel pipes had none of that - Polaris and Talullah were delicious!

    Haha not bad. Coincidentally I was looking up carbonated water and your channel popped up. Do they charge to ample the springs?

    • @BeyondIntention
      @BeyondIntention  Před 2 lety +2

      Thanks, glad you found us! There is a vehicle entry fee ($10) charged from May to September, but only between 8:30a and 4:30p. The museums and spas and one of the pools have additional fees, but we had a great time arriving early and exploring with no charge. We're big carbonated water fans - we even got a SodaStream for the campervan to eliminate our seltzer can waste!
