I Found The Leak.....And This Is How I Fixed It

- After a series of investigations including finding a secret room under our house, chipping holes in the concrete, and cutting a hole in the ceiling I have found a reasonable work around for this plumbing problem. I will have to reroute a kitchen sink drain to start, here is how I did it.

Glue a large washer to the bottom of the primer and glue cans and glue a magnet to the top of the ladder so you can just stick them on and have some hold for movement to not be able to knock them off. The magnet also is useful for holding other metal tools in place along with screws.
That's a good idea 💡
But what happens if your ladder is Aluminium?

If you want to keep that bar sink you could install a lift pump to pump the water up and into the crawl space drain. It really depends on how much you use the sink and if you think it would be that beneficial for the amount of work
You certainly have had your share of problems with both residents, as far as previous owners "makeshift" house repairs and secret problems, finding windows, rooms etc. Thank goodness you are a very good repairman of strange circumstances. You certainly save you and your family a lot of money. Best of luck that you don't have any more surprises in your new home.

That bar and carpeting took me back to the 70s. The brick and wood paneling....I thought the Brady Bunch would be walking in any minute.
That was a relatively 'easy' fix! I thought you might need to do some spelunking or major excavation. That house has some pretty complex elevations to work with!
Good tip: keep all the labeling/writing on-line, that way anyone coming in behind you can see what they are working with or if something needs to be replaced.

LOL Yeah my dad offered me his HVAC company upon retirement, I passed. Didn't mind helping him now and then but maintenance can be very nasty. I was an industrial pipe fitter and loved the work.

Hindsight is always 20/20. I would have used cleanouts wherever the drain line made a 90, or used no hub clamps so it could be dismantled if it clogs.
Great work getting that all together.
I thought about adding one clean out as soon as it came into the crawl space but there is so little room there I would never use it anyway

My wife and I purchased our first home, 9 years ago. It's a 100 year old house. Lots to do!
One of my proudest moments was taking apart some of the old drain pipe (which had cracked) and spent $200 on materials + 5 hours to fix it. No more leak. I saved hundreds not having to pay a plumber.

Before I patched that ceiling I would run new non copper water lines since they are showingtheir age. Greatway to fix a issue,luckly you hada better option then digging up the floors.

Excellent job! I like your new place more, every time I see you working on it. This week has been my turn to deal with covid. Miserable miserable week. Oxygen below 83 many times. Starting to look like light at the end of the tunnel, though.
Hang in there buddy. That is low oxygen saturation…. Keep close eye on it and get oxygen if you need it.

I got out of HVAC for the same reason. I always hated working in 140+ degree attics. I almost had heat stroke replacing a leaking evaporator. Also, there are so many dishonest HVAC contractors in the field that many customers assumed that I was also dishonest.

I'm a retired plumber/hvac guy. You have the vent tee backwards"I'm sure it will work just not to code". Instead of raising the old drain line up into the joist space you could of just dropped down the new drain line in to the old drain line

Hey you have a sump pump in the corner of that utility space check if the pump splurged in and check the bottom of that sump !!!
What a find. My degree is in HVAC and this is an HVAC problem, not plumbing. The line between the two professions are fuzzy at times but ductwork is straight HVAC work. The odds of a water or sewer pipe that are external to the duct leaking into it are pretty slim. Many HVAC businesses do plumbing as well but not necessarily the reverse. The plumber will probably tell you the same thing then charge you for the visit.
Condensation can collect in uninsulated metal duct. If you don't wish to replace the main trunk then you should clean all of the dirt out of it as well. It creates drag on the air and lowers the CFM to your vents. It can also hold mold, especially when combined with water. I don't think you want to breathe that in every time you turn on the A/C. If you are going to clean it then try to think of it like the aerodynamics of a car. Manufacturers smooth out the lines of vehicles to prevent drag and that's what you should do to the insides of duct work. Just the dust that can collect inside of ducts can affect flow. Personally, I would replace the trunk with one made with fiberglass duct board then you don't need a wrap or to worry about condensation at all.
On a side note, please shine a light in the hole to the left of where the duct enters the wall. I'm hoping for a secret vault but it can also help you inspect the duct after the wall transition. Good luck!
I've always hated running anything in concrete, especially pipes. If you have a failure (and you eventually will) your options to make repairs are severely limited. By the way, Love this oscillating multi-tools. They make short work of many jobs. Blessings/

Also, how do you know that the furnace is NOT pressurizing the sewer pipe?

Wow, everyone here is giving great options on how to keep that bar sink with a working drain. I was just going to say put a pail under it.
After all, if you don’t put anything down the sink but water and soap, you can reuse what the pail catches to water plants.

Nice work around. Superior alternative to busting up that nice floor. I do hope the duct cleanout works it took forever to get the smell of dead mouse out of ours. The little varmints' found there way it through a hole in our plenum. Finally had to hire a duct cleaning company that used an enzyme solution similar to the stuff used to remove dog pee odor from carpets and that finally got it. Cheers.
Now here's a good one for plumbing. The fall of a drain pipe is steeper the smaller the pipe. A 8 inch pipe requires less fall than a 4 inch pipe. Thats why our mobile home park has 6 inch pipe buried when 4 inch pipe is all that was needed. We had a limited fall we could have so we went over sized. At the front of the property where the city sewer is the pipe is 6 feet deep but at the back its less than a foot deep.

Sewer gasses can be pulled into your HVAC. You need totally disconnect the existing drain line at the main -- can't just do inputs. Also would be well served to run flexduct inside existing ductwork for add'l air quality protection. Any sewage into soil will seep into air too...

just wondering what you were going to do with the old drain saw you plugged the end where you cut off but i think a foam or even concrete plug after you take out the bar sink don't know what would be best but something i think so no backups will come out the leak again.
The stuff in the vent pipe probably came from stuff falling in the vent pipe from the roof. Probably would be a good idea to put some kind of cover over it that would allow it to vent but would prevent stuff from falling in the vent.
Probably too late, but while you are opening up spaces I'm screaming run data cable, run data cable! :)
When you're under the house banging around and digging around you should have a Shop-Vac to suck up all that Dusty stuff so you don't inhale it.
