LYRICS
Hey
What's your name?
Don't worry...
And don't be afraid
We won't hurt you
Hey
Lost your way?
Well don't worry...
Just do as we say
And we won't hurt you
It's hard
The world can lead you so astray
It gets harder
It's hard just to keep the faith
Do you need a reminder?
Of the love that we gave you?
Don't worry
You're walking away...
But we'll always be watching you
We'll always be watching you - Hudba
Gotye sounds like Gorillaz meets NIN with this song. This entire album is such a game-changer, and it blows my mind to think that he created every song on the album by himself, in a barn in Australia.
Bro, you just almost nailed it. The only ingredient you forgot in the mix was IAMX, but it's pretty pretty pretty accurate.
Excuse my english, please. I'm from Cuba. Here we got no education at all; we are barely able to use our phones.
@@charlesnoguera6998
Your English is better than the majority of those I've met in the US. I'd never hear of IAMX before now. I just listened to the song Animal Impulses, and I 100% can hear what you mean. Thank you for the recommendation! I wish you all the best, my friend.
@@WordUnheard So glad to hear it. Please, give it a try to Come Home and The Land of Broken Promises, from the same album: The Unified Field. All of his albums are good... by the way, not only The Unified Field. Thank you for the compliment 🙏.
That crescendo at 1:36 is just breath taking !
What a masterpiece. This guy is a genius.
Gotye is pretty underrated. Too bad most people only know him for one song.
+DACFalloutRanger 100% agreed !
+DACFalloutRanger I AGREE like he is hands down one of my favorite solo artists
My favorite part of the song🥺🥺
@@DACFalloutRanger imagine being one of those people
A Narcissist's lullaby to her victim.
A mother's words to her golden child daughter.
Making certain the Family Trance remains solid and in tact.
Hits freaking hard.
Discovered this song/video when I was a Jehovah's Witness over 10 years ago now....happily free now....but at the time I saw this and just couldn't put two and two together. The impact of the song felt so familiar....as if I'd dreamed it already.
Anybody who was raised in a high control religious group....you're not alone.
I’m an exjw too and there’s so many gotye songs that have so much more meaning once you leave. Eyes wide open was that for me. ❤
This song and video give me such a feeling of dread in a way I shouldn't almost like.
Calirogue I'd dance to this
Not worse than Closer by NIN
you’ve got to admit that 2:26 is the highlight of the song
This has to be the most unsettling music video I've ever seen. The movements of everthing and the way the eyes glow in the dark just makes me feel extremely uncomfortable.
This is what it's like to live in the US
I made the mistake of watching this before bed one night & I had a really creepy nightmare afterwards 😣😟😨ò
And for me its mesmerizing. Lovely art 🥰
*Don’t be afraid*
Chair what are you doing here? o.0
Gotye: makes song about how blindly following a cult is a terrible idea
Me: Yes Gotye I want to blindly follow your cult, where do I sign my name?
I dunno, it's creepy but the lyrics nor the visuals actually depict anything terrible about the group
@@mooby1721 it's more the implications. I don't think he could have Actually put anything too obvious there.
Is this proof that we're being gangstalk or stuck in a simulation
Me: started to worship gotye himself.🥺
Well I definely need help. I'm stuck in a cult that doesn't let me out of the basement. It also makes me di paintings and to worship this Jim Pickens guy.
One of the things that fascinates me about Gotye is that he can do incredibly bright and bubbly things, and then switch to doing something as cold and sombre as this.
I can't even describe how this song makes me feel. The closest thing I could think of would be, when I listen to this song, it's like it's not just my ears hearing it; it's my entire body, my entire being. It resonates through my soul.
Yes!!!
Hey

(We'll always be watching you)
(We'll always be watching you)
This song is so haunting, it seems so eerily true to life, I mean society always has a peg on you no matter what you do, hey have a record of your life, " just do as we say, and we won't hurt you" I mean it is true.
Loving the hand movement.
Pavianus Primus i love it too
OMG I love it too!
Looks like lemongrab joined a weird sect
July Lira 2:35
Thats also why audio wise he depicts a demon saying well always be watching you they have most defiantly had one of them say that shit religion balance with wholesome thinking is healthy not scary every body need a disipline over themselves like that in order to be truly healthy in body and mind religion is not scary people and there fucked up and perverted undisiplined minds are
Welp I thought I was alone in this. Thanks for confirming.
@@jackiegibson4996 So freaking agree.
Wait so lemongrab isn’t already in a weird sect?
How can a piece of music and visual art be paired with such perfection???
Gotye, we could use more songs like these now more than ever...
Aerith hell yea
I love this. Not only the meaning, it's also oddly catchy.
I grew up in a very strict and isolated religious community. This song hit me in a way nothing ever has before. I listened to this on acid and I felt this emotion of longing for the life I used to live and then I was hit with grief for how much that life fucked with my head as a kid and still does today. It was very strange but on acid this almost put me into a trance and I felt the emotions I used to feel while swaying during worship. And the dread. The dread is profound, the loneliness, the fear of hell. This song slaps.
I agree with you here! I felt the same and came to read the comments to see if someone felt it too. CREEPY
Gives me the chills, yet I can't stop watching. His videos are so amazing; really love his work.
If George Orwell's book, 1984, ever had a theme song, this would be it !
For some reason, I see this song and Bronte as opposites.
they really are. bronte being about the parental love we feel for pets and how it feels to *have* to let them go when they die vs this song,
a manipulative anthem for the clingy and abusive way groups can "love" us
@@HadalStreetlights nail, head etc
It is, I think Bronte is about how the precious things of childhood is in your heart with the time, always in your memories, and this one is like a message of how those ones that say that have the truth for you actually wants to manipulated you and be always there to watching you
This song is enticing, such brilliance put into the sound and words of this song. I am a musician myself and have always loved the dark sound in music. This is an excellent example of dark tones and beats harmonizing together perfectly, it has a meaning behind it that is very powerful, and the song and video are both simply hypnotic.
@Trace Dasilva Jesus calm down, will ya?
Whatever happens in the song at 1:40 is terrifying, I love it.
This might be my favorite gotye music video
this is so fucking creepy and messed up, i love it.
Experiencing this song and music video live with tons of people in a dark concert hall was a special experience to me. Back then I only knew "Somebody that I used to know" from Gotye and I simply went to the concert because I was invited because somebody else didn't want to go and the ticket would have been wasted otherwise. Ended up being my favourite concert of my life so far. So many great songs I got to experience for the first time live from Gotye himself paired with these beautiful music projected on a giant screen. It's almost a decade now since then but such a precious memory. Thank you Gotye for all the beautiful art that you've created so far! :)
Im 2 seconds into the video and im already creeped out
This is obviously based on the villagers in Minecraft, geez.
Hungh
Why is that ture 🤭
I have no doubt
🍉 MELON
I feel that this song is at first a person entering a cult and them asking him questions and then he slowly delves in deeper and soon it escalates to “don’t worry just do as we say and we won’t hurt you” so a cliche reassurance turns into a threat and then it gets worse and they say stuff like “do we need to remind you of the love we gave you” then “why are you walking away” then to “we’ll always be watching you” so this cult appears to a horrible experience and he just wanted it to end and since he left it just filled him with paranoia thinking “is someone watching me?” So to relate to real life he might have wanted this son to relate to what has happened to him in real life he may have gone through childhood with a controlling parent or today he may have found himself a manipulative partner that led to this song and the manipulative part of it kind of relates to this song because as you can see it looks like this character is in a manipulative kind of cult environment
In my interpretation, the lyrics tell a story of the seductive proselytization of a new member of a religious cult. Towards the end the inducted member leaves the group and is left with feelings of paranoia and fear due to the parting message: "We'll always be watching you..."
That may or may not be what it is about, but it's pretty fucking creepy when taken in that context, especially taking the video into consideration. The books, animal sacrifice, and gestures of worship coupled with the cross-like statues really hint at an artistic rendition of the cult-like mentality that led to modern day theistic religions such as Christianity.
Whatever the case may be, I like the ominous tone and vague animosity of the lyrics as well as the tranquil ambience. Interpret it however you will.
I wonder if the moment of realization occurs at the moment everything turns to color, as if he notices things aren’t so... “black and white”
It’s about religion in general
Looks more like he's talking about Satanism because Satanists tend to disrespect/destroy the cross.
You summed it up
@@traditionalempress6961, you’re a joke. I recommend you sit down and shut up until you actually know a little bit about the topic you’re attempting to demonize (pun intended). lol
Hats Off to the ANIMATOR, VIDEO EDITOR and then GOTYE. what a sync presented making an inferable meaning all over. Too good a work...!
1:35 to 1:45 is one of the most awesome sounds I've ever heard! :-)
I rlly love that part!
This is like a cult went to some sort of monochrome rave
MyShock34 Sounds lit to be honest. I can make a religion out of this
I love the part when they get mad. It fits so well with the song. It's fearsome. Almost like they are saying, "You dare to leave us? Well, you wont get far."
So I've been listening to this song on repeat for 4 months. I may have had a mental breakdown also. I'm about to check myself into a mental hospital. Thanks Gotye, you're the best artist I've ever heard, and this song is so hypnotizing I'm going to a mental hospital not
I hope you're doing better now
The ending Bass notes are deeply moving
because life is vibration.
His music isn't just music. His music combined with his videos = pure art.
This man has made a video for nearly the whole entire album! I can say that I have heard the album ladies and gents. And it is greatness! Pure greatness!
Need a new album from him.
I'm always scared to watch this video
yup me too. had a heart attack when I first watched it
Geez, really? What do you think of Freddy Kruger then?! LoL
Sieerrraaa OuO that’s because you guys smoke weed every day
Seeing that joyous face suddenly twist into furious, unholy anger... creepy. Good stuff. I thrive on this kind of thing so it doesn't bother me. It actually enhances the song.
it's ok
when I listen to this song I feel sooo good
+Major Tom Good ? Good with what ? Who is watching you?
I love your account name:)
Such great instrumentation
the lyrics remind me of how in certain countries if you voice your opinion and it’s negative, you’ll be punished-and how they have control over you.
My skin tingles when I hear his music.
Scientology ladies and gentlemen
+Lake Kale
Along with a few others.
Sounds about right
And Satanism.
@@traditionalempress6961 i can 100% assure you this song is about Catholicism. im sorry the Christ allegories went over your head. it is in no way about Satanism
@@TheSoup222222 It’s suppose to represent all cults in general.Satanism is a cult 🤷🏻♀️
I absolutely love how entrancing the animation is ! the music and the video go great together c:
This is an excellent representation of the smothering of creativity by conformity. I don't feel as if any specific religious belief is represented here except that of mind control or restricted thinking. To hear this song with no animation, it has a great beat that reaches in and makes you think, "what is going on here?" Excellent! Either way it is very provocative. I love it!
_dont worry, well be watching you_
*But a well doesn’t have eyes*
1:44 Waking up from a falling dream.
When someone you love leaves you... its that feeling...
there is always so much meaning in his music videos. i love it
🤯
That bass line is amazing ! It is unbelievable what can be done with audio today.
This is still such a beautiful music video
I love how everyone have their own interpretation about this song and video.
I've heard every Gotye song actually. This is still my favorite.
Villagers in minecraft when Steve isn’t around
That rise in sound at 1:45 always excites me for some reason lol
Shivers every time!
Waiting for more in 2019..
This is like if Walt Disney had a really dark side.
Look at old disney then, dark as duck and really racist hahha
Walt Disney had a very dark side
I thought I was used to Gyote's visuals being weird! Hands don't bend that way!!
This video and song gives me chills every time I listen to it.
I find that Gotye has some great songs and original videos. Good stuff! x
Yeah! I just got new headphones and listened to this song again after never being able to hear the bass. It's flawless!
I can't stop watching but yet it leaves me unsettled
reality is unsettling, but you have to feel that feeling to keep going.
2:27 bEaT dRoPs!
This music video is a masterpiece, we cannot understand yet
I find this very artistic and mind opening. Wally has quite the mind, in my opinion.
Man I just cant get enough of this song
Love this video, and the music so much! Just has a certain calming feeling to it. Nearly looks like an Old Disney cartoon, just on a motherLoad of drugs. lol
"What cross, officer? This is T, for Tolerance."
watching this on fullscreen in a dark room is so hypnotizing.
this looks like most of the dubstep parties i got to
The bass in this song, gaaadamn! 🔥🔥🔥
"Heart's A Mess" Is Also F*cking Amazing.
KittiKinkadeXXX and smoke and mirrors, my favorite 3 songs of theirs
KittiKinkadeXXX normalfags
u guys still watching this after 5 years or not?
This is his best song yet.
Can't stop listening to this. If I had even a lick of money I would buy this song.
This song is beautiful Gotye is amazing at portraying the way he sees things and feels about things and almost all his songs are such a powerful message
Simply loving it. Amazing.
The dubstep at the end is so satisfying
This evokes a lot of emotions I used to have as a kid when my family forced me to go to religious ceremonies. A mix of confusion and terror.
Headphone warning at 1:40 if you can still hear me
Woah, just perfect. Both the song and the video.
Spooky vibes drove me here again
Can't believe I hadn't seen this music video yet! It's an awesome song and this video complements it brilliantly.
Those handclaps tho!
All of you are missing the point of this video. It's not illuminati. It's conceptual art. Its obviously based on how religion and cults try to pull you in with happy faces and façades. The lyrics are obvious too. The half cross, the cloaks, the big smiles and then the faced of terror, and the worshipping waving books. It's an amazing video, and as corrupt as all religion is, this was a fantastic way of portraying it.
Back after 10 years 😭😭😭 found this song when I was like 13
god this is so amazing i was terrified when i first listened to this while watching the music video but what can i say.. i was like ten years old
I think that it's obvious the video is about religion and how the
"World can lead you so astray"
But, I think the animal in the group is a reference to innocence, and the black, white, and gray coloring is referring to how there is no right and wrong, and there is no fine line, there will always be gray smudges. The sudden change in colors is hownreality hits, and he realizes everything is not so kind, it's cruel and not as welcoming as he thought.
The eyes on the book note to how the religions will always be
"Watching you"
And making sure you do not stray. The monks are showing people how committed the monks are to the religion. Most religions kind of force themselves upon people, and force opinions. The monks were crowded around the animal, showing they wanted control, numbers, and were forcing.
If you think about it, there are some truly deep concepts in this song.
Please reply what you think. (Sorry for typos)
Just what I got out of it.
IMHO, one of the highlights from the album. What a shame Gotye isn't AS popular anymore - finally, a great art-pop star, and it was let go :/
this is a great song to listen to when you just wanna chill and you gotta love that bass.
Watching this at 1:00 in the morning, and it is one freaky video. I love it.
His music mellows me out to the max- I just want to sit and listen- not just have background noise. Keep it coming Gotye!!
Just do what we say, and we won't hurt you.
I love this video C: I love it because they accomplished their goal- they meant to freak me out and they did. God job guys!
❄️
I loved watching Gotye perform, when I lived in Denver, CO (Fillmore, Red Rocks). I was sad when people left after hearing the biggest hits, and I was blown away by his and his bands musical ability (productions are also outside of the box / not solely "live instruments"). Anyways, I hope you keep on making music, Wally, and persevere through the ebb and flow of life. I also hope to work with you one day, it is a lifelong dream (on my bucket list)- keeping my fingers crossed; hope makes the world go round.
All the lemongrabs...
Or all the Dorito faced bad touch sempais...
They jammin tho lol IMA start dancing like thiiiuss
