Wingsuit Flying Over a Dam and Dam Wall

- This is Brendan Weinstein, a 29 yr old wingsuit pilot, the mountain Brendan is flying down is Le Pleureur, located in Switzerland, and the dam is called Mauvoisin Dam.
Brendan said , he has been making this jump for 2 years with one goal, to build up enough speed, to buzz the lake and fly over the wall of the dam at the end, and it took him 28 flights to figure it all out.
Brendan runs the company BaseBeta which is dedicated to serving base jumpers, and has done roughly 1200 wingsuit flights, 700 base jumps, and 800 skydives and spent 2 years preparing for this flight with fellow jumpers.
I did a story in 2018 on Brendan Weinstein and since doing that story, Brendan came to me and asked if I would tell you about this flight.
Thanks for watching

I've seen numerous wingsuit videos and never really considered that with such a steep glide ratio, one could muster enough lift to actually ascend. Super Cool.
No one is talking about the people who fly next to him to film. Just like the sherpas who climb Mt. Everest once a week.
Just like no one is talking about the guys that made your PC/phone or the the guys providing you with water and electricity right now.
Try to keep the virtue signaling to a minimum.

Dam... that was pretty cool. Thinking about the prep work, money and effort involved in doing that 28 times. The guy on the bridge must have been amazed.
There are some amazing 360VR videos of this you can try with just about any VR headset. I can't imagine what it would be like in real life.
Okay, I don't know if this was deliberate or not, but the first word in your post was hilarious. Well done.
Wingsuits achieve the ultimate wish in (almost) flying. Thrills are huge, sadly ever present risk of something going wrong at those speeds near rock 😢

I'm sure they built access roads to dams.
Wow... Very wonderful. It was my dream in my teens.. Now I am watching.. Even I dreamt sometimes..
What he does is converting thrust for lift, or temporarily trading horizontal airspeed for a climb. This is the theory, but putting it into practice on a wingsuit is really impressive!

yes and no, those landing were not horizontal for long and they did not pull back up. and the water landing was fake. I will actually be doing a story on the box landing, waiting for him to answer some questions i emailed him.
@@WonderWorldYTC I never watched closely enough to that water landing! Ha!
I guess you're right about Connery - he doesn't really pull hard enough to level off before impact. I look forward to your episode about it!
i can show you a video where someone has flown upwards before
Wingsuits can indeed go up. Gaining speed in a dive and flaring to convert energy to altitude the current record stands at over 100m vertical gain.
@@sergeig685 I Agree. This is the same technique that experienced paraglider pilots use to land and glide very close to the ground for a long time. After flying over the dam, his speed was very slow and he would have quickly lost altitude.
Incredible
These Wingsuit people are clearly the ultimate "Boss". It's enough for a man to fly without the use of a chute while doing it. These guys push the limits of what a man can do in the air. It's almost surreal how they pull it off. They're pushing death with these proximity flights...absolutely NO room for miscalculation.

If he had stalled his wings there he would have had a hard time not crashing into the wall.
@@mreese8764 That's what I wonder about; how often do these guys stall accidentally during an average flight? I just read about Johnny Strange's accident, but he was jumping off a cliff and apparently his wings didn't inflate properly at the very beginning of the jump. Once you are moving a 100mph or better, it seems like these suits become pretty stable.

This is amazing and all, but I have to imagine the people that try this have a 50% chance of dying every time they fly.
If it was even 10% as dangerous as that, there would be none left. It even said in the vid that it took him 28 attempts to get it right.
@@thechumpsbeendumped.7797 I know for a fact they die very often. Just think about it, how often do skaters fall and hurt themselves? Do you see these guys surviving the tiniest error? Not saying it´s not unbelievably awesome btw, but it is for insane people.
@@botero01
It’s definitely only for an adrenaline junkies, but that wasn’t what you said. If it was 50/50 on every jump, on average most people would never make a third jump and some of these guys have done hundreds. It’s just a guess but I bet the death rate is significantly below 1%, not 50%.
@@botero01
You got me curious so I looked up the stats.
Fatality rates:
1, skydiving 1 death per 100,000 jumps,
2, BASE jumping 1death per 500-1000 jumps,
3, wing suit flying approx 1 death per 500 jumps.
So the death rate is about 0.02%, or 200x more dangerous than standard skydiving which is significant when you consider that to get training for wing suit flying the schools want you to have had 200 standard jumps first, meaning only skilled jumpers get to progress onto wings.
Edit,
That’s 0.2% not 0.02% 🤦🏻♂️
@@thechumpsbeendumped.7797 There´s many ways to "feel" the statistics you present. I´t s not a "dumb" thing to do, but it´s impossible not to see how easy it could be to die while doing this.
