Dominic Miller has been called “a great, serene storyteller” by Peter Ruedi in the Swiss weekly Weltwoche, and Vagabond, the guitarist’s third recording for ECM, might prove his most poetic tale to date, as he creates striking melancholy textures fronting a quartet with Ziv Ravitz on drums, long-time associate Nicolas Fiszman on bass and pianist Jacob Karlzon. The foursome - each musician a skilled leader in his own right - a has a knack for balancing deep grooves with subtle interplay, weaving pastel shades into delicate harmonic changes as they chart a ruminative path through eight new Miller-originals.
Dominic: “It’s never been my intention to make a guitar album. Thanks to the amazing singers I’ve worked with over the years I see myself more as an instrumental songwriter. And as they do, I see it my mission to surround myself with the best musicians who understand the narratives in the ‘songs’. I’m happy to have assembled the right lineup here with Vagabond.” The album was recorded in the South of France and produced by Manfred Eicher.

It is a short, simple but very profound piece, expressing Dominic's deep feelings for his late father. There are few notes. Yet the sounds and melodies are far more eloquent than the words. He is the only musician in the world of non-classical music who has a sound that says so much.When I first heard this album, I felt that this song sounded different from the others: there was less reverb, which is characteristic of ECM. So the beauty and warmth of Dominic's raw sound comes through more directly.
Dom, do you know? It is said that when you remember someone who has passed away, many flowers will fall down around that person in heaven. Every time you play this song, your father in heaven will be surrounded by the beautiful sound of your guitar and many flowers. So I hope you to play this song in your future concerts. We would like to pray with you for your father too.

@@iandiandi Of course, I have been listening to Ralph for a long time. I like musicians who have a beautiful sound that only they can produce.And I like people who can really listen and play to the soundless space and concentrate on that space. The space is not "empty and nothing". It's very eloquent. So I like a lot of the ECM musicians who understand that. But Dom and Ralph are special.

the piece is so beautiful, like miracle. I have a long admiration for Dominic's own music, and the work he does represents the highest artistic quality for me within music. He creates the best sound, the best ambiance and expression.
still, I wonder in what circumstances this video was created...seems as Dom would be uneasy and perhaps a bit distressed in the situation, and I do not have a good feeling about it . May be there was an artistic concept on purpose, to let thru the feelings about the inherent struggle of creation....perhaps. I hope Dom is all good and everything OK.

Dominic is so emotional and has such a warm soul. He grieves deeply for his father and the many pictures and time together with him. His tears touch every note with love that he allows and embraces his deceased father. Kind regards Torsten

First of all, all ECM musicians complete the recording in two days.And Dom didn't notice the video for 'Clandestine' was also filmed. I think it's the same with this song.
It seems that recording with ECM's Manfred Eicher is quite a challenge for the musicians. Dom says in one interview. 'A lot of musicians yearn to put out an album on ECM, and I used to be one of them. But when I tried it, I realised that ECM is not for the sissies."
However I think Dom really likes the work he's put out from ECM. He is very happy with Manfred's production.That's because it's 'authentic'. Previously, Dom was self-produced, so it was a 'selfie' piece. But now, Manfred is bringing out a lot of Dom's objectively great charm.
