      @_.D3._ Ooooh this is a fun one. Goalie in lacrosse is vastly different, but here's my guess without knowing you. When I think soccer goalie I think lean and long. To me this feels like a good candidate for a LSM aka Long Stick Midfielder. You have the chance to play all over the middle of the field doing damage as a defensive player, but you get the rare chance to play a little offense too. It's a great position and maybe something that would translate well with assumed size and ability to read situations and react quickly. Good luck!

      No time like the present! I used to play summer league with a heart doc in his 50s! For just beginning of totally go short stick. You need to learn to basics and portability is important. They fit much better in cars. I'd argue crafty is easier with a shorty too, but some poles are impressive. And there are more options for box lacrosse and you can only use a short stick. Get the shorty and have a blast learning the game!

      First. Lacrosse - YES! It's a great sport that you can take pieces from everything you've already done. I LOVE the link between basketball and lacrosse. They are incredibly similar. If you like to facilitate, then Attack is always a great place to do that. If you like scoring goals and generating goal scoring chances I'd suggest you start there. Height and Attack is an underrated advantage.

      Chase, first I LOVE your mindset right now. You are asking such great questions. I think you are right to think Defense first. I've had some great lineman play D for me. Quick feet and the ability to control your body while exerting force on another player is great for Defense. What I would suggest, 1) watch a bunch of lacrosse to get a feel - you can watch pro D players highlights on youtube (czcams.com/video/ct0dlQSZNvc/video.html) 2) workout with a couple buddies that play Offense and that play Defense - have them help show you the sport 3) get in your coaches ear as soon as you can - let him know you are interested and what should you work on 4) get as much game like experience you can - get to off season practice, any club teams locally that will allow you to join practices?, any pickup fall or winter leagues in your area? Good luck starting out and keep in touch. My email is in the "About" section so feel free to reach out with any questions.

      Attack and Mid are probably your most destined for positions. If you like the offensive side you are in the right spot on Attack. Stick skills are very important for offensive players.

You sound like the makings of an Attackman, but you are going to need to get comfortable with the stick. You can do it, just takes a little work. I think you're really going to like lacrosse as it's very similar to basketball. I'd recommend getting reps dodging from behind the goal as this is the place where you can facilitate the most. I never had speed, but you can make up for it with your anticipation. See things develop before they happen. Middie is a great place to start. You don't always need topline speed. It helps to have 1 of the three middies be fast, but doesn't need to be all of them. Attack is another position that works. Just keep working and be ready to fill whatever role the team needs. First, I need to get you in that gym and build on that frame 😁. I could see you running some sort of defensive midfield, Long Stick Middie (LSM) or Short Stick Defensive Mid (SSDM). The most important part of one on one Defense is your feet. Get some ladders and make sure you have quick feet. Keep building that stamina because you need that everywhere on the field. Get that stick in your hands as much as possible. You'll be behind with Stick skills so as much time you can spend with it (wall ball and ground ball reps) the better. Good luck and let me know how this spring goes!

We love a good long, lean LSM thats fast enough to cover speedsters out of the midfield and then create transition on the offensive end. Honestly as a defender I don't care how hard you hit, I care about your feet. If you have quick feet and can stay in the right position on our player, you will be a great defender. @OffBallLax  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Welcome to the sport and my biased opinion, Great Choice! Handling a long stick right away may not be the best path forward. You can still play defense with a short stick. I think this would be a great starting point as it allows you to use instinctive defensive concepts, but also gives you a little more time to work on your stickwork. Defensive midfielders are a great specialty position that helps team defense but doesn't carry the ball as much. But the bottom line here is you just need to get a stick in your hands and learn the game. I'm sure you'll find your niche!

    • @OffBallLax
      @OffBallLax  Před 2 měsíci

      Tough one first...gear. I kinda steer clear of the gear game because its very unique to player preference and brand loyalty. Stick with ECD, Warrior, STX and you can't go wrong. Speed with lower stamina usually points to more of an Attack position. Assuming you have interest in offense. Quick burst of speed are great for dodging and getting around your man for a chance to shoot. Biggest need is the stick skills. You cannot play on Attack and not handle the ball in your stick. Lots of wall ball work here will be your best friend!

      Love that you are taking a look at it. Now is a great time to start. You can use the fall to get as much stickwork in as you can. Attack is the natural progression in lacrosse from forward in soccer. As Attack though you will be expected to have good ball handling sticks with the better defenders going against you. From that perspective I'm thinking Midfield will be the best for you to start to get an idea if you like the sport. Good luck and check the other videos here on how to improve. If you find its not for you, you can fall back on Defense. Other option to look at if you like D, but want a chance to fun up and down the field. @OffBallLax  Před 8 měsíci +1

      To buy the long pole right away or not. That is a tough question. It may depend a lot on where your team may want/need you. My best recommendation is to borrow a stick until you get closer to the season. That why you know what you are doing. If you want to purchase, you can never go wrong with a short stick. If you decide later that you will be playing with a long pole you can just swap your head off the short stick and move it to the pole. But I'd highly recommend first borrowing from friends until you decide what you really like, or until you talk to the coach and figure out where you will most likely be needed. Excited for you to give it a go this year. Good luck!

      I agree you are on the right track. When you say adult league, I read, less time to spend on pure stick skill development. Defenders are the ones that generally handle the ball less than all other players so catching and throwing is less important (still a skill needed on the field though). The most important thing you need is footwork and keeping your body in the right position. PGs are great facilitators, and an "X" Attackman is usually that guy on the lacrosse field. That's the player that often sets up behind the goal (often referred to as "X"). However, I say this all with the reminder that Attack requires some very good stickwork. You will want to get that thing in your hands ASAP. And get lots of handing reps (hold in your hands and stand still with a pivot foot, let a friend try to take it from you. Move your body in front to shield the stick but keep your pivot foot). Also get wall ball reps to ensure you know how to catch and throw. Good luck!!! When in doubt, mid is a great position to.

These players sole job is to gain possession of a ball that starts on the ground between them and the other player. Quick hands, strong base, and knowing how to use your body generally lead to successful results at the face off. It's also very scrappy which I feel is perfect for a wrestler. The other position that I think makes the most sense is a defensive midfielder. It gives you a chance to still body up players and use your strength against them. I’m also aggressive in basketball I had to go against a team with a kid that is like 6’3 so I had to fucking try my hardest he kept pushing me to get to the hoop so I had to push back and then I got the ball I was like dam.

      Height doesn't imply defense. Lots of great Offensive players with good size and height. Top pick in Outdoor Pro Lax is 6'3, 215lbs. Don't play D if your heart isn't into it. But on offense there is more of a challenge with stick skills. Check out some of the videos on how to improve your stick skills and you can be a player. Other than that...just watch your language, you never know who's watching ;)

      It would be interesting if you have a "TryLax" or "Speed Lax" available in your area. It would allow you to experience the sport but without the contact. Best place I've seen to find this is on local facebook groups that talk about lacrosse or sports.

      Stick skills, stick skills, stick skills. This game has a great equalizer and its the stick. You can be the greatest athlete in the world but if you can't handle a stick its hard for you to be on the field. Get working on a wall and ensure your passing and catching is a strength. On offense you don't have to be "fast" if you can anticipate well. Know what is going to happen before it happens and you'll be in the right place. I wasn't fast, but found my niche by predicting deflections and defensive movement. I think Offense makes sense for you but the stick skills need to be a priority.

      If you like that side of the ball go for it. Sure your size makes sense there, but also need to be light on your feet, you'll be covering a lot of WR type players so use your coverage skills. Be excited to be physical, just be careful when you see someone back you have to pull up. No hitting from behind in our game. Have fun!

      Doesn't mean you "have to". Do you want to play goalie? I imagine there are enough differences that it isn't a clear one to one transition. But if its something you like, there is nothing wrong with trying. Team ALWAYS need goalies so its a great way to show up and be in demand right away.

      That is always a tough situation when you don't have enough players for one spot. The positive there is it will help develop another skillset for you making you a more rounded player. And sometimes we coaches ask to change things around because we think there may be something there that you don't see in yourself. Can't hurt to try!

    Im starting this year in 14yo and i dont know what position. I played defense in soccer but i dont think i would be the best defender in lacrosse. I have been doing boxing for a while now and im going into the gym to build speed and stamina. What position do you think i should be?

    • @OffBallLax
      @OffBallLax  Před 7 měsíci

      I'm curious what makes you think you wouldn't be a good defender in lacrosse. If you mindset is defense it can transfer over with marking players and knowing when to help your teammates. I love your boxing background to help with the footwork which is crucial for good defense. If you want to experience a little of both but hedge on defense you could go for LSM (long stick midfielder). Their role is to play both offense and defense but lean a little more to the defensive side. It helps if they have more conditioning and fleet of foot to get the ball to transition from defense to offense. Good luck!
