- How I Got Into Graduate School with a Low GPA + What Made Me Stand Out
Hi everyone!
In today's video, I discuss how I applied to graduate school with a low undergrad GPA and how I made my application strong. I hope you find this video encouraging and helpful, specifically if you are thinking about applying to graduate school.
Also, I would like to mention that I did take post-bachelors classes that helped me boost my GPA. The grad programs that I applied for did accept post-bachelors classes, which helped me significantly. Now, this is my own personal experience, so what worked for me might not work for you. Everyone's academic journey/story is different. Depending on what master program you are applying for, you will need to research how to make your application stand out or reach out to the program for support. 😊

This helped me so much! My mother grew I'll while I was in undergrad and my GPA dropped to a 2.7. I have been trying for grad school for quite some time and now I believe I have a chance!
Aw so glad to hear that! Yess, you do have chance just keep applying and don't give up.
My GPA is a 3.4 and I feel like I won’t get into any programs. I’ve been crying for for 5 days straight :( this process is so stressful. I love the transparency!
Aww I hate to hear that you been so stress out. I too was extremely stress and worried that I wasn't going get accepted into a school. But with faith and prayer I was able to get accepted into the grad program for me. You have a great GPA and all you can do is patiently wait and keep yourself busy into you hear back. Wishing you the best!
Just currently acquired my results i got the same gpa too… what grad schools did you apply into?!
@@josephmanumbu1098 I applied to 2 schools and got into both! Use ASHA ED Find so you don’t spend too much money on application fees.
Thank you for this!!! I graduated with my Bachelor’s back in 2005. Can’t remember my exact GPA, but it’s definitely in the 2. Range. I’m looking at going for my Master’s after working in a related field for nearly 20 years so I hope a LOR, my statement, and my job experience helps out. I definitely need to do well on my GRE’s and hopefully they’ll allow post bachelor courses. I’d be totally willing to take a few classes at a community college if it’ll help my GPA.
of course! Thank you for watching and sharing. You definitely got this! And yes make sure to ask the programs you are applying to about them accepting post Bachelor courses. 😊
My gpa in college was a 2.49. I am in a masters of public health program right now doing well.
Fantastic, shows there is light at the end of the tunnel. So inspirational.
Aw thank you so much ad yes there is definitely light at the end of the tunnel! ❤️
I graduated from a mediocre college with a 3.0 GPA, and went to Georgetown University for graduate school a couple years later. It's possible.
Yes, it is possible! Thanks for sharing 😊
Hey, I have the similar situation as yours and applying to Georgetown. Is there any way to reach out to you?
I would email admissions, maybe attach your resume and transcript to start. There’s nothing you can do to change the past, but they might be able to give some advice so when you do apply, you’ll submit a confident application.
Do your homework, and visualize how your intellectual vision aligns with the program’s goals and curriculum on the writing statement. Being a written communicator helps as well.
Great to hear! Applying to McDonough currently!
Hi. I have a very low undergraduate GPA of 2.3 due to an illness and a medical issue (wrong medication) that caused me a physical disability during my undergraduate years. Then I earned a Master's degree with a 3.5 GPA, a 750 GMAT, 10 years of work experience, 2 years of fundraising for UNICEF and other NGO I also published research in a scientific journal. My goal is to apply to Business School for the PhD, what are my chances? I really appreciate any advice you can provide.

It’s ok! Don’t get discouraged. Keep on working on it and do your research on how to be competitive candidate. You got this! ☺️
I also graduated with a 2.1. It’s nice to know there are other people in the same boat and not giving up!

I found this video by searching "grad school vlog" and i really enjoyed it. i am starting my masters degree this fall in library science and just posted a video on my page talking about choosing a grad school! would love to see you do something like that next, but congrats and i look forward to seeing more content from you. :-)
Aww, thank you so much! So glad you enjoyed it. Congrats on starting your master's degree this fall and best of luck. I will definitely check out your video on your page! I never thought about doing a video discussing choosing a grad program but I definitely might do one. Thank you 🥰

i graduated software engineer with 2.9 and im looking for grad school now, wish me luck 😊
Good luck! I hope you getting a graduate program.
I also have same cgpa
I had a 4.0 my freshman year and then I switched schools and my gpa tanked. At least I got into a research group + have an internship this summer.
I want to get published. Btw I’m wanting to get a PhD in chemistry
Wow! That's amazing. Congratulations into getting into a research group and landing a internship this summer. You should definitely get your PhD in chem. :)
What was your gpa after you graduated with your bachelors?
My gpa is 3.5 and I have decent BS-MS research experience. 2 thesis projects, 3 internships.Good LORs.
I am facing lots of rejection from university. Currently going to apply for fall 2025 . I am really doubtful of getting in at this point 😢
I just want to encourage you to keep on applying and not give up! I got rejected to my top two schools for grad school but I kept doing research about other programs and never gave up. So keep applying! and if you need to take break and apply in fall 2025 I thinks thats a great idea. Wishing you the best moving forward!
@@ThroughtheLensofDes Thanks ❤️
Thanks for the sincere video!!!!! :)
Thank you for watching ☺️
This has been very helpful.
SO glad it was helpful ! 😊
What do you mean by low GPA? Can you tell us your exact GPA for us to know?
Hi, I mean my GPA was lower then a 3.0. It was a 2.6.
@@ThroughtheLensofDesI’m sure you didn’t wanna give out this info but this gave me a bit of hope having a 2.3 (or 2.5 don’t remember) 🥹
Thank you for this!! Much love !
Aw you are so welcome 🥰
Which grad school did you get into? What are you studying?
Hello! I attend San Jose State University and I am pursuing my MA degree in Counseling & Guidance 😊
Hi, im in Ghana and wants to apply to grad school in Canada as international student with a low gpa. What should i do? Also, can i email you?
Hi, congratulations on deciding to apply to grad school. I suggest reaching out to the school graduate coordinator of the program you are interested in. Also, reach out to the program international coordinator to ask what you can do to strengthen your GPA and make your application stronger. Check the ABOUT section on my channel page, and in the description box, it will have my email. :)
Good. I got 2.1 gpa bachelors. Just few days ago. But in college degree i got 3.35!. I was working so i think they wont loook at my low gpa.
Thanks for sharing and hopefully they wont but just make sure what GPA they will be looking at for your application review. Best of Luck!
My cgpa is 2.9 out of 4. Do you think i have any hope(with 320+ gre score)?
I would say you do but it just depends how much studying you put into the gre. I personally don’t do that well on tests like the gre but I did take it (forgot my score) and ended up not needing it when applying to grad programs. Best of luck! You got this.
Did you do an entire post-bac program ? Or did you take a few post-bac classes
Hi, I just took a few post-bac classes at a community college and even one UC extension class
What about UC Berkeley graduate with a like 2.7 or 2.8
Hi, it depends on the graduate program you are specifically applying for. Some graduate programs accept post- bachelors classes and take into account the grades you get in those classes into your overall GPA. So I recommend looking into and reaching out to graduate program coordinators of the schools/programs you interested to see how you can boost your GPA and be more competitive. I hope this was helpful! :)
Is there any chance with a 2.5?? 😭
Hi, it depends on what program you are applying to and the GPA requirement. Most graduate programs require a 3.0 and above. However, if you can take extra classes at a community college that can be counted towards your undergrad GPA, that will help your GPA. You have to make sure the grad program you are applying to accepts classes at a 2-year community college. As mentioned in the video, I had a very low undergrad GPA, and I took community colleges after I graduated to bring my GPA up and helped significantly. I hope this was helpful! 🥰
Yes it is, I was accepted into my grad school with a GPA 2.5 full admission
@@astoldbybrandee which university?? If you don’t mind sharing :)
@@ThroughtheLensofDes Did you just retake classes you failed?
@@jaywest3734 Hi, no I did not retake any of my classes I failed. I really couldn't! So I inquired from the admission offices at the schools I was interested in about taking post-bachelors classes. And a lot of them told me I can take classes at a community college and they will count those grades towards my GPA towards my application.
