      Aww that's so sweet 🥰 Yes, Kakarikis are very different from most parrots. Kakarikis are very active little birds who love to fly and run around fast. My little birds do all that, but sometimes they take a break and just want to hang out with me for a little bit 😁🌸

    Picasso is lovely 🥰 Oscar holds his foot up randomly in the same way that Picasso does 😅 his nails look great and really nicely trimmed. Do you have a routine/technique for nail trimming? That would be great to see- I feel its the area I most struggle with with my kakarikis!

    • @CheekyKakariki
      @CheekyKakariki  Před 3 lety +2

      Haha that's so sweet! I have only seen males do it and I think it's a litte mating gesture or something haha. But it looks so adorable when they lift up their little feet like that. 🥰
      Oh, nail trimming is so scary! Once there was a great local pet shop where the owner would cut my birds claws for me. (Sadly the shop closed). But thankfully I don't have to do it very often since my birds mostly naturally wear down their claws by running around all day long. But once in every while I have to trim them and I always try to look at the claw with a bright lamp behind it so I 100% can see the blood vein inside (and avoid cutting close to it at all costs). But yes it is very tricky no matter how many times I've done it. And to make it worse one of my eyes needs surgery haha. But I rather prefer to cut less. As long as the lenght of the claw dosn't bother the bird from walking correctly (or snapping) I think it's acceptable. But if you have any petshops nearby it's always worth asking if bird nail trimming is a service they are willing to offer. 🤗🌸

      @@CheekyKakariki Sorry for the late reply to this too- but thank you for the nail cutting info! There used to be a pet shop near us that cut Oscar's nails once, but it isn't there any more sadly. I have cut Oscar's nails once before using a bright lamp behind, but it honestly took me (with the help of my boyfriend and co-parakeet owner/co-parakeet servant as we call each other sometimes haha) about 40 minutes to do both of his feet. He was so wriggly and I was terrified that he'd wriggle mid-snip and that the quick/nail vessel would get caught. My mum's fiancee's brother and sister-in-law are vets and they have helped us do their nails once before - they gave us a good tip- to keep some cornflour and a wet cotton wool bud nearby. that way, they said if the quick does get caught, you can quickly get some cornflour onto their nail and it will clog the bleeding. Still, I'm really nervous to cut their nails.. Ernie has all black nails bar one clear nail which terrifies me. and Flora's really need doing (she can walk no problem, but they are much too long). I'm just ultra anxious about it. I need to just bolden up and do it I think😬

      @@sleepybubbi9638 Hi there! No worries about slow replies. 😁 I've been absent for a while now too and it's a bit difficult to keep track of all the messages I get. (Sorry in advance if I can't find some of your messages). Its great you have some loved ones that can occasionally help with the claw trimming! 🤗 I don't remember if I mentioned this before, but to reduce all the wiggling (and maybe attempts at biting) I put a little thin fabric pouch over their head. But I never leave it on for long since I don't like the look of it, and I want to be sure they don't suffocate or something. But that little fabric pouch is a great help since I always trim their nails solo. Maybe it would be a great help for you to try something similar 🌻

      @@CheekyKakariki Hope all has been ok with you 🤗 It is a bit difficult to keep track- I don't think the CZcams notifications button makes it too easy to follow them either 😅 Thank you for the tip with the little head pouch- that is a good idea! I might give that a go. You must be a pro at doing it to trim their nails solo 😁

      @@sleepybubbi9638 Hi! I've been a bit sick (not covid) and busy with all the Christmas stuff. But overall me and my birds are doing fine thank you 😄 I hope you & your birds are fine as well. 🤗 Haha yeah, It's definitely difficult to keep track on youtube sometimes! (Glad I'm not alone with this struggle! 😆) I'm also glad I can give you some ideas. Well I'm definitely not a pro bird claw trimmer 😄 but I got inspired from watching people who work with wildlife. And when they put foot tags on predatory birds like owls and hawks for example they always cover the birds head so the bird and themselves won't get hurt in the process.overall I think it works pretty well (it makes the process easier for sure) but as I said. I'm very careful and check on my birds so they don't suffocate. The fabric can't be too dense and heavy and not too tight or too loose.

    • @CheekyKakariki
      @CheekyKakariki  Před 2 lety

      Hi there! Aww that's lovely! 💕 Kakarikis are a bit different from most birds (they are very active and needs plenty of space to run around and fly around everyday). They don't sit still much and are not as cuddly as most other pet birds.) But I have heard from some other bird owners that their cockatiel and kakariki get along quite well.
      However it is wise to be prepared and have a decently sized spare cage so you can keep them separate in case they don't get along. 🌻 I once had a budgie who killed one of my kakarikis 😢 so be very careful.

      Oh no, I am so sorry to hear you lost your little Kakariki 💔 From what you are telling me I notice how sad you are and how much you tried your best to keep it alive. I too have lost some wonderful little kakarikis in the past and I cried for months. I still cry when I think about them so I really understand the heartbreaking pain you feel. Truth is that kakarikis are very fragile little birds, and sometimes bad things happens to them that you can't help or save them from. Kakarikis sometimes can have heart and liver failure. Brain tumors (resulting into seizures/paralysis). Injuries resulting into blood loss or infection. Other things they can die from is intoxication (toxic food, toxic air, toxic metals etc). I'd highly recommend you to read about how to keep a parrot safe at home. Since there are many things in our homes that can kill them.
      But right now I think the best thing you can do, is to take time to heal yourself from this traumatic experience. And remember you tried everything you could to save your bird. Whatever illness your bird suffered from, your kakariki is no longer in pain. May your little kakariki rest in peace 🌷🐥

      @@vishnupriya.2729 You are very welcome dear.🌸 Life is just so cruel and unfair sometimes. But I'm sure your little bird knew you tried your best to help her.
