    There are a few theories on where the origin of "saying uncle" came from. It dates back to at least the 19th century and it possibly goes back to the Romans. It definitely does not originate from any Animes.

    • @jamestucker6488
      @jamestucker6488 Před 4 měsíci +30

      Due to heavy Irish immigration in eastern Canada and New England in the 19th century, it is likely an anglicization of the Irish 'anacal', meaning deliverance or quarter.[2]
      A less likely theory is that it derives from a phrase uttered by youngsters in the Roman empire who got into trouble, patrue mi patruissime (“uncle, my best of uncles”).[1]
      A fanciful suggestion is that it may be based on a joke from 19th-century England about a bullied parrot being coaxed to address his owner's uncle.[1][3]
      Another suggested origin is from the English phrase “time out”, a plea to cease hostilities. The abbreviated usage "T.O." was mistaken for the Spanish “tío”, which means "uncle".

    Believe it or not, the first version of this had worst base placement. Some minerals and the starting Nexus/CC/Hatcheries are placed in significantly better spots because all the SC1 AI starting bases where placed in such terrible locations (because money didn't matter to them). Originally I thought it would fit to leave it like that, but it showed quickly how annoying it was and a bad idea that was so now its "improved."
    Also, these two are the rare missions where you can fail the primary objective, and a secondary objective will appear (being to stop crystal from returning to Zerg base or crystal from entering the destroyed temple).

    I think in normal mode it's the player gaining vision of yellow, or going across the cliffs teal is on.
    Notice how at 4:27 a couple of seconds after purple appears on the cliffs, yellow starts moving.
    I remember noticing how I kept to myself for the longest time just thwarting off teal Protoss, and then when I had a huge army I came into contact with yellow and it was as if nothing happened there.

    • @Alex_Fahey
      @Alex_Fahey Před 4 měsíci +10

      I'm almost certain that theory is incorrect. The gaelic loan word theory seems the most likely of all the etymological theories. Namely, Irish immigrants that arrived in North America might cry out the gaelic word "Anacal" to beg for mercy. This would be a common refrain among the children from Irish communities when dealing with bullies, which would sound like a strongly accented version of "Uncle" to the Americans already living there. This would explain why the earliest uses of "cry uncle" are in the 19th century and it becomes very common swiftly. It became a common phrase in North America but is utterly bewildering to English speakers outside of that continent because it comes from the massive Irish immigration during the Potato Famine.

    • @Alex_Fahey
      @Alex_Fahey Před 3 měsíci

      @@Voidmercenary Zombie is one of those words that is extremely clear etymologically. Specifically, it came from West African slaves brought to the new world who still retained some of their cultural and religious traditions. Zombie is an almost exact copy of a Kongo word for fetish (the religious object - not the sexual proclivity). It is also related to a word meaning god or spirit. It came to mean a sort of fusion of those ideas in the form of a fetish inhabited by a foreign spirit which later evolved into the idea of the walking dead we know today where a human corpse is the fetish being possessed by that spirit - which is functionally identical to the numerous such terms that were used before the usage of zombie like revenant, ghoul, and so on.

    For anyone in chat that has a similar problem with setting rally points, a neat technique to learn is to set a camera hotkey over your production and a camera hotkey where you want to rally to. From there, you just flick back and forth, left clicking on a building, tapping the camera hotkey, then right clicking at the new location. It's incredibly useful on the ladder for how fast you can do it... but it's also less annoying even doing it slowly just to not have to move your mouse as much.

  • @Flamewarden_Honoushugoshin
    @Flamewarden_Honoushugoshin Před 4 měsíci

    So there are 3 prevailing theories I can find about the "uncle" = "surrender" thing:
    1) There was a known joke in newspapers ~1890-1910 that read:
    "A gentleman was boasting that his parrot would repeat anything he told him. For example, he told him several times, before some friends, to say “Uncle,” but the parrot would not repeat it. In anger he seized the bird, and half-twisting his neck, said: “Say ‘uncle,’ you beggar!” and threw him into the fowl pen, in which he had ten prize fowls. Shortly afterward, thinking he had killed the parrot, he went to the pen. To his surprise he found nine of the fowls dead on the floor with their necks wrung, and the parrot standing on the tenth twisting his neck and screaming: “Say ‘uncle,’ you beggar! say 'uncle.'""
    I'm skeptical of this as an origin as the particular choice of "uncle" as a word he was trying to wring out of the parrot seems to imply to me that the term was already culturally associated with surrender. However, it is worth noting that the phrase was first printed in the Oxford English Dictionary in 1918, (relatively) shortly after this joke had circulated in newspapers.
    2) Americanization of the Old Irish word "anacal", which allegedly was a means roughly "protection"/"deliverance"/"quarter" from the proto-celtic "anextlom". I find this claim dubious, though I suppose it could have been something that came over with Irish immigration. The part that I find dubious though is the poor etymological citations on most of these claims and the general lack of "anacal" in modern Irish as best I can tell (though that may also have to do with the similarity to the English word "anal"?).
    3) Perhaps the most antiquated and thus hardest to prove: allegedly Roman children would say "patrue mi patruissime" (“uncle, my best of uncles”). Since uncles were colloquially seen as figures of of respect comparable to your own father at the time, addressing the other with that title would have been a sign of respect and deference. Allegedly.
    Bonus) It could literally have just started as a call for a grown-up to interfere with whatever the children are doing, thus being a way of "chickening out" of whatever game they are playing. From there it might have spread through the aforementioned newspaper joke, since it's largely an American/Canadian phrase it would make sense for it to have somewhat modern origins.

    I think that first mission would have been more cool if it started like half way in. So after the zerg have already gotten to the crystal with the whole top of the map taken and you have 15 minutes to push back and stop the drone getting to the beacon and destroy the zerg

    I love how the Garm brood was present despite how it should have been eliminated by the Cerebrate.
    Or is this the game being accurate to its previous campaign missions, with the Garm Brood surviving?

    My only opinion, beyond that this mod looks crazy fun, is that it seems like it might a bit undertuned? I mean, Grant absolutely roflstomped through this particular campaign. Protoss will no doubt be harder, especially the last mission!

    Ah, the map I hit the entity limit on playing Zerg. Sunken colonies everywhere.

    Totall going off topic here, but I understand its from a Gameplay POV but i never did understand why Robotic units, cost food supply. Like Probes for example. Also fun mission to see Reversed, I always hated this mission in the OG game xD

    It's a nice variety option for the player, but I'm curious why the Aiur protoss have access to the Corsair. Isn't that a Nerazim design?

  • @CorrectHorseBatteryStaple472

    Lol I think reavers need some support. They did not look good here, you just beat a 2-base zerg with 6-base protoss. It's so painful to see 9 scarabs explode on top of nothing because 11 reavers attacked one zergling, lmao. Still fun to watch though, thanks for trying goofy compositions!
