Oh! I'll never get over the passion and superb acting of Franco Corelli. And how well his voice "fits" with that of Simionato! Outstanding! Divine beings!
Yes, they were simply marvellous together! Have you listened to their performance of "Les huguenots" (or rather "Gli ugonotti")? It isn't bad either :)
I just marvel at the size of Corelli's voice. Simionato, Callas, Nilsson, Sutherland all had huge voices and Corelli sounded like a god with all of them.

We are fortunate to have so many live performances of Carmen with Corelli preserved, in addition to his two studio recordings and his filmed version.
Corelli is the best Don Jose, when he's not sobbing, there's no doubt ; but no one ! no one can touch Price in this role !

I first listened to a recording of this amazing performance some 40 years ago -- it still gives me chills.

These people sing and act their hearts out, they have taken the trouble to train their voices properly BEFORE appearing before the public, and they are even smart enough to choose repertoire that isn't too light or too heavy for them. They are examples to be followed. And btw, how Carmen could leave Don José when sung like this, I just don't understand

There is a video on YT of this final scene with Belen Amparan as Carmen, from Corelli's 1956 movie. He looks and acts so convincingly like a wounded and crazed Don Jose that you think he's really going to kill her. Talk about intense!

Had it on on a Correlli Live collection LP set, but could not play it lately as my record player broke...

According to the psychological aspect in Bizet's libretto, Don Jose gravely disappointed Carmen's hopes and deepest wishes.

She was but at times say soprano roles and quite well.
I had a funny moment last year while getting an MRI. The technicians encouraged me to have music played thru headphones while the MRI clanged away, and I chose a bouncy scene from Carmen I was familiar with, having sung it myself, as Frasquita, in an excerpt concert. So there I was, face down on the MRI platform, ready to hear the words in my memory -- when it became clear that it was being sung in Italian!
That is a very funny story!!

Wow, what a drama.... Corelli a force of nature. Simionato not a real match to him. If Corelli had been born 20 years later he would have been the superstar tenor of his time with worldwide recognition through media. A "Three tenors" (like Pavarotti,Domingo,Carreras) event with him hardly imaginable. He would have sung his colleagues in the ground. To dominant his voice and appearance. I heard people saying Kaufmann is on par with him........ with all due respect to JK but that's very far from the truth...
Placido Domingo sang this role very well too. His voice fits to don Jose personality. Kaufmann? No. Pavarotti and Carreras did not fit to the French repertoire.
Un timbre ideal para Don José. Mejor en italiano. Su francés era hortible. En Italiano era el mejor tenor heroico de la historia.

, non si può criticare la pronuncia francese di un Perfezionista del canto Lirico e della Tecnica come Franco Corelli , che da quanto scrivi, pensi che non conoscesse bene la pronuncia francese corretta, non é così, se fossi un conoscitore approfondito del Canto, sapresti che moltissimi cantanti italiani, pur di poter ottenere suoni o note più gradevoli , o che altrimenti non riuscirebbero ad emettere acuti , storpiano anche le parole italiane modificando le vocali , le consonanti , o addirittura le parole od intere frasi, e la magior parte degli appassionati di Lirica, che non sono approfonditamente preparati .neanche lo notano..Franco Corelli non ha mai avuto di questi problemi..solo che essendo un Perfezionista assoluto, per ottenere Tecnicamente un canto il più perfetto possibile dal punto di vista della emissione, evitava certi tipi di pronuncia ghutturale e certi suoni nasali Francesi . perché nel canto il suono nasale rappresenta un Grave Difetto , quindi le en, le u , le ch, ecc. ecc.. Difatti se si ascoltano le canzoni in francese interpretate da Franco Corelli, avendo la canzone minori esigenze di imperfezioni di emissione, la sua pronuncia francese è otima.! Prima di criticare chi é stato il Migliore e Più Completo, in senso assoluto , essenso anche un perfezionista, bisogna saper approfondire e conoscere i perché ...!

My all time favorite of the well over 150 performances of Carmen. Corelli is an animal. Simionato's no slouch either. Too bad he never did this role in costume at the met. He did however sang two don Jose's in the new york city parks with the met. We will NEVER here voices like these ever again. How sad! At least we have the great memories to warm us up in the evenings.
I love Franco but look at Del Monaco's Jose. He's psychotic at the end.
Corelli is also psychotic at the end. There is film version where you can see it.
This version is good but once you've heard him perform this with Price, it's difficult to appreciate anyone else with him in this role.
