- New Orleans own Mr. Pete Fountain with the Tonight Show Band. Didn't catch the fist song from the beginning (must of scrambled for a VHS tape when caught off guard by Pete's performance). Basin Street Blues/ Closer Walk with Thee into Amazing Grace.
If anyone know the original air date, please leave it in the comment section.
Great tone in all register s
So thankful for all the years of great music Pete provided. I was able to see him live and meet him afterward. Was also blessed enough to own one of his signature Leblanc "Big Easy" clarinets.
A great person is someone who doesn't remind you of anyone else.
Pierre Dewy LaFontaine, you are sorely missed.
I loved it when I would accidentally catch a Tonight Show with Pete playing. Though a sax player, I was always in love with his wonderful tone...so pure and joyful and an impeccable technique. You can tell how Johnny honestly loved the band and the musicians in-house and the ones he brought on to the show.
masapell aside from his great technique, one of the things that gave Pete Fountain such a unique sound was that he always used a crystal mouthpiece as opposed to a rubber or plastic one.
GREAT TONE AND TIMING....GREAT MUSICIAN
Such pure and rounded tone, with an unmatched technique. I found out many years later that he never got around to learning to read the music. Didn't affect his amazing talent at all.
What chops! ........ What class! ......... Whatever happened to late night TV?
This is brilliant. Bless Pete, the composers as well as Doc and the NBC Orchestra.
What a great sound. He had a real command of his instrument.
i watched The Tonight Show, frequently. Pete was the only one i saw that would open the show, & perform, then, they would break for commercial, they'd come back & Pete would be, still, playing. He played right through for the audience.
You can wait around and hope, but there will never another like Pete Fountain the one and only!
When I was in fifth grade and I was trying to decide what instrument to play in the school band (i wanted to play violin but Mom said 'no violin!'). It was as if God purposely caused Pete Fountain's new record : "Louie, Louie" to be played on the radio at exactly 5 min after 8:00 (I had to be at school a couple of blocks away by 8:30) every morning for a week. I fell in love with 'that sound' and I HAD to learn how to make it myself. I've been playing clarinet now for about 50 years, (22 w/the US Army Bands) and Pete Fountain has always been my musical role model and virtual mentor and still look to him for inspiration in my playing today. Through my playing, (in my neck of the woods') I'll pass your music on to as many young players as I can and never let your memory die. RIP, my dear teacher.
His tone and technique are what clarinet players strive for, in my humble opinion.
In this style of music yes the best.
Absolutely no one like him! What a loss August 2016 was for us all.
I always believed Pete Fountain was on his own level - above the rest. Not to take any thing away for the great clarinetist of today and in the past- but there are clarinet players and then there was Pete Fountain! Man- that clarinet is roaring on Amazing Grace! Gifted by God! Loved the way he presented himself as a musician- Total Class! Bill Shine
Amen brother! Never met him but always seem down to earth and classy.
Spot on - A one of a kind talent. He was able to ring out every drop from that clarinet - every drop 👍👏
Thank you for posting! He loved to play on the Tonight Show and Johnny loved having him there. Johnny was known to bump a guest if Pete said he was going to be in town!
I used to play to Pete Fountains albums along with Brenda Lee singling. Those were his Basin Street Blues albums. I picked up so much technique playing Clarinet to Pete's songs in the early 70's! Sadly this world only loses such great talent like this, but rarely replaces it! I hope once we all pass over to the other side. We can go to our own choosing of historical places and enjoy what was once great!
Genius!!!!
I have so MANY of Pete on the Tonight show from the 80’s still on VHS Tapes. I recorded every time his was on, Especially when NBC went in Stereo, My First Stereo VHS recorder was made By Fisher & In 1984 it was 999.00 Back then which was a fortune. I had my “RCA” plugs Going to my Amp & Then to a Set Of “AR” speakers. It was Heaven. & Yes I always recorded in “SP”.
Do you know what the name of the song that Pete played an Johnny Carson, the show dated Sept. 27 1984? Farah Fawcett and Ryan O'Neal were on that night. It was on Antenna TV about a week ago. He had some great solo runs in the song, I didn't hear him say the name of the song, though he seemed to say "Help" at the end. Thanks
airgnd if my memory serves me right it was “Hot tin roof Blues”. But I will get the tape out that I have from the Original Broadcast and find out a Definite Answer for You.
Please convert to digital and share with us. Thanks for commenting.

Date of Pete's Tonight Show performance: July 14, 1989.
When johnny carson says, more more....you play on!!
I heard Pete in 70s as a foreign graduate student in the US. After all these years it still sounds devin.
Devin?
I think he meant divine.
