    People say "Practice makes perfect". But that's not true. Practice makes PERMANENT. If you practice something incorrectly, you learn it incorrectly. It can take years to unlearn what you have learned. You do need to record EVERYTHING. It's really important. Not only do you hear your imperfections, you also have a chronicle of your good ideas. Then you can revisit them and make some awesome compositions!
    Find that balance between relaxation and exertion. You need to exert yourself but be relaxed at the same time.

    • @TheZenytram
      @TheZenytram Před 4 lety +3

      So true, practicing anything the wrong way is more detrimental than not practicing at all, and the ppl that from the start practiced the right way and got good really fast is seen as "natural talented" by those whom do the wrong way.

    I got a guitar stand for my birthday one year, and I kept it right next to my PC (which I overused), within arm's reach. So whenever I got even the slightest urge I could have it in my lap in a second. That got me playing so much more than I ever had before, and is largely responsible for me finally making it a habit.

    This video nailed it for me, my big issues that were covered in this video was technique and starting with songs that were too hard. I managed to “learn” those difficult songs but anytime I look back at a recording I realize how sloppy it is and how badly my technique needs work. It’s like for the past ten twelve years my goal was to play a song finish to end, but never playing it properly while hoping I don’t make a mistake.

    9:03 For begginers this is probably the best advice, buy a stand for your guitar and have it at arms reach most of the time. You'll get those 15 minutes of practice in just because it's there ready to go. Never leave it in the gigbag, you will not play that guitar. I play my cheaper guitars way more because my expensive ones are in cases...

    I find that learning too hard songs can be very beneficial. You practice it a single bar at a time, maybe for a week just for one bar and practicing impossible chords or transitions. And no matter what, you're gonna develop a lot in one week. You practice the song for a month- maybe you can't play it in rhythm yet but you just overloaded your guitar muscles and what you practiced earlier will become much easier. I don't think this kind of thing is possible to measure, I mean which method is faster, but patiently and rigorously practicing impossible songs worked out for me wonderfully.

  • @alexsanders7404
    @alexsanders7404 Před 4 lety

    There are probably multiple reasons I suck at guitar. Maybe it is because I've always believed that I could accentuate who I am as a songwriter and lyricist. I always wanted to focus on the feeling of the lyrics with the "colors" I create with the chords. I never looked at is as practice, but more like trying to relive and re-express the feelings of the songs I write. I only call it practice when I am with a band. But I've been criticized for my dynamics and I've certainly struggled with arpeggios and some chord transitions. As a singer I've struggled with my intonation- when I am taking lessons and practicing consistently I get compliments from other singers. When I don't, I get criticized by other singers or people who have good ears. When I know I am going to record, I practice to a metronome for weeks and really get myself in gear. I've always needed something like the studio or a show to motivate me. But without a project I really care about or a goal that really drives me, I can completely lose touch with my technique.

    I'm glad you made a point about sticking to "fun" stuff like learning songs to get certain techniques down rather than straight up practicing the techniques themselves. I think of it every time I play since I could never commit to strictly theory when I was younger. I ended up just playing tons of songs and acquired the techniques from each one. I mainly focused on my picking hand, arpeggios, string skipping, rhythm, suspended chords, embellishments etc. I do wish I would've learned some more theory but when I look at the folks from my youth who focused strictly on theory, a lot of them ended up quitting playing altogether. It's like it sucks all the interest out.

    I stright suck because I've reached a plateau and challenging myself has been becomg increasingly harder. The things I know i can't play I'm not disciplined enough to sit down and learn. I'm too comfortable where I am now. I've kind of developed my own style and way of playing that i just kind of just wait for lighting to strike and I get a great idea. Rather than do the work to become a better guitar player. Which could definitely open up more possibilities for new ideas to happen.

    I wouldn’t say I suck, because I’m getting better every day and have only been playing for about 6 months. To suck to me means to have been given the opportunity to get better but wasted it. I’m not a master, but I’m rising in my skill and trying to practice every day, not moving on until I can play the song I’ve been working on up to speed while playing the notes with full clarity and not panicking with the left hand to get the notes in. It’s been a lot of fun learning the guitar and I know that I can eventually reach your skill level!

    this is the best guitar related content i have seen! You are also an amazing player and I love your music. Would you ever do any music other than video game stuff?

    You and Steve's beautiful acoustic cover of Scarborough Fair inspired me to learn it on guitar, and this video has helped me to identify the flaws in my playing (especially sticking out my pinky like an idiot, that one is too true for me!). It's definitely the hardest piece I've properly attempted, but it's also so rewarding because it is such as amazing song.

    Number 4 really made me think of 'Inside Peaches Castle'..... but then what sort of classical guitarist isn't musically ambitious?? :)

    I want to learn guitar...but my wrists are basically shot. Like, I’d need a super narrow neck guitar with nylon strings only. Or...am I better off just giving up on ever learning and making due with finding a decent Uke?
    (I bought a guitar with the money I made from one job. Unfortunately that same job is what destroyed my wrists, and finding hacks and limits just for Daily Things is a constant wip. I finally sold my guitar back from the guy I bought it from-it was too big for me, anyway, apparently-because it simply hurt me to play it no matter how I tried adjusting my hands. Callouses are one thing, but tension is...unfortunately not. To not flare up I have to keep my hands ridiculously relaxed or be on a timer to, say, deal with opening jars or manipulating any sort of weight/resistance)

    I just started teaching myself recently, and I found a time I like to practice, but yeah, I dont set a limit for how long. It usually ends up around an hour though. Since I'm also really just trying to build my calluses and work on muscle memory, I just do basic exercises for that, and I'll put in a movie I've seen too many times so I dont get too focused or invested. Prolly not the best idea, but right now I'm really only working on stuff like spider walks, strumming patterns, finger picking patterns, and learning basic chords (D, A, and E).

    Bro, I appreciate your videos. Andy Mckee, Antoine Dufour, video game music and folks like yourself keep me going. Found you not too long ago and have back tracked to all of your older videos and you've come a long way, which is awesome. You've got better quality, better ingredients. Papa Johns. Thanks for giving me continuous motivation to keep playing guitar and video game music as well as some good laughs!
