BSA Fury SS (E35SS) - First Start Ever Attempt - With Optional Electric Start.

- The time has finally come. Will the bike that I've built up over many years, documented much of on this channel, and now allegedly completed, come to life? I've fitted the optional electric start - so we have to use that - surely! Patience is a virtue, believe me!

It brought a tear to my eye when she started up, delighted for you. Nothing wrong with a bit of smoke! I hope you are able to take a test ride before too long 🇬🇧🏍
Thanks Stewy - yes definitely nothing wrong with smoke on first start, especially with respect to the amount thrown down the bores during the oil circulation test. So all good.
Your diligence is rewarded Angus. I like your attitude when it finally ran, no cheering or whooping, but the knowledge of a good job well done.
Many thanks Nigel. I'm not sure about the diligence bit sometimes but maybe just raw tenacity. As you may have seen, I have to admit to a minor whoop when after the first start on the A70.

One little trick I have found useful is to leave a value train cover off of the intake side so you can see the cam lobe open and close the valve, doing so makes it easy to determine whitch stroke you are on . Add a simple piston position indicating device and you have all the information needed to determine if everything is assembled with the proper relation to each other and if not what needs to be changed to make it work together. One occasion this method saved the day was a new marine engine that had left the factory with both left and right hand rotation parts installed.
Thanks Thomas. Agreed although I was always on the right stroke - just not far enough before trying to locate the correct crank slot. The other issue was my brain when it came to calculating the RH firing in relation to the LH - i.e. before not after.

Wow, what a great sounding twin….. considering this is only one of a few survivors (I saw another video where you had made this one from parts parts.) It sounds brilliant well done….. I loved the look of the new bikes, even if they didn’t fly off the shelves, and there were so many problems with finish, fading et cetera… I really really miss my BSA A65 Thunderbolt which I had converted to oil and feed with the Devimead needle roller, bearing crank…. It was enormously bullet-proof thereafter, and ran many many many many miles until I sold it to pay for divorce. My biggest regret ever….. thank you for this lovely channel, so glad I found you

Well done! Great to hear it run. I've been inspired by your videos to buy all the magazines and brochures you have shown on these bikes, I'd always wanted them and now via the wonders of the internet I am getting regular deliveries from the USA. I note the registration plate on your Fury SS (BAC35J) was used on a test bike featured in the March '71 Cycle Guide, that's a nice touch. Looking forward to seeing your first test ride.

@@BSAPowerSet I searched the planet for Brit Bike stores so it was an adventure. Unfortunately too late due to NVT telling me everything for the Fury/Bandit was destroyed, when it clearly was not the case. Missed opportunities, including missing the jigs that would have helped in the machine of the head etc. I think it was MCE that had them, they'd skipped them as of no earthly use to anyone. I was also told 800 crankshafts were made either by Doug Hele or the Chairman of 1971, can't recall his name but I had a telephone call with him. And as we know these are almost as rare as dragon eggs. So some items were destroyed. I've got some catching up to do on your videos though.

They still proudly display a huge red lit BSA sign so they are still in business. Maybe worth a call if your fellow builders want to see if there're more accomadating.

@@BSAPowerSet I don't think it was Turner I spoke to. Perhaps it was Dennis Poore, but it's so many years ago. I was pretty sure it was the Chairman of that period. He knew the history for sure.

@@BSAPowerSet Well you never know, he still seems to be looking for new ideas, and got to do something to make use of those prototype Fury cranks! I had a good close look at one of Mr. Millyard's H2A 1000cc/4-cylinder Kawasaki strokers a couple of weeks ago, his welding is really astonishing - you literally can't see the join.

Cheers John and yes you're correct; however, the good news is that a pattern commissioned by a friend and collaborator has almost been completed.
@@BSAPowerSet Angus: I cannot believe that auto advance unit is a "one-off" as it has a Lucas stamp and a part number. BSA at that point had no money to commission such a thing and I'll bet that unit was used in some other British engine, perhaps even an agricultural one. Some friend of yours just may have Lucas parts books squirreled away and that unit will be in there and also its intended application. To have this project roll over and die now because of that missing piece is unacceptable.
@@johndonlon1611 Totally agree. I also put many months and miles into that Pheonix, Angus cannot be stumped at the last hurdle! I am a prior owner of much of this bike. I recognized Angus had a far greater chance of getting it to where it is.

@ John Donlon Many thanks for your concern. I do have plenty of Lucas documentation and am pretty sure the AA unit is unique to the Bandit/Fury. However, do not despair as this project most definitely will not die.

Very many thanks TG for the long term interest. I do have a pattern AA unit on the way from a kind soul who is also hooked on these. I don't think it's enough of a challenge for Alen!
@@BSAPowerSet it was just a thought straight after I had watched him alter the primary drive on his friend Henry Cole's Triumph.
I suppose there are any number of good engineers out there who could make you one though.
My first bike was the one you are missing from the power set. The 250 street scrambler with the high exhaust that burned my leg all the time.
