.Thank you. I like your health angle on gardening . My mom was a depression era gardener. She liked to use what we already had on the farm with a few exemptions. peat where we lived in N Michigan was a hour north so we would take the pickup there and load it up. We composted leaves she would send me out there to turn it once in awhile. we had chickens she filled a barrel with water and chicken manure from the coup and dip it and put it between the rows. sadly she didn’t explained it to me just go do it. never pesticides. she had chicken wire around the garden and would herd the chickens in there Occasionally it also kept wild animals out. Her garden grew like crazy . I didn’t appreciate how good we ate growing up. Fresh eggs fresh chicken fresh vegetables pick berries in the woods apples in the fall mushrooms in the wild thank you Mom

Having a great year with my greens
I've been eating greens from my garden for the past 2 months. I didn't eat enough greens before coz they're kind of expensive!! If you pay $3 for a bag of greens, you end up limiting how much you eat to save money, but when its in the garden you up your greens intake in order to use up your greens. I have 2 lettuce planters, 1 mixed lettuce in the soil and some spinach and I eat them every day and whenever people visit i make a bag for them and make bags for my neighbors whenever I see them in their garden. I seed them quite think like mini lettuces and just cut as a go along.

I'm really into longevity and healthspan as well, and FYI one of the biggest factors to help is to intermittently fast and to avoid dry and high heated foods (like the kale chips you mentioned), they contain lots of AGEs (advanced glycation end products) that cause a irreversible inflammation process that ages us.

Great video, and a great learning experience!! Thank you. Question: Can you, or anyone, advise me what to do with my kale that has already turned tough and bitter on the outer leaves (it's fall now), but I don't want to risk damaging the plant by eating the younger, better tasting inner leaves. Do the outer leaves get more sweet after a frost?
You mention early in the video that the lettuce will easily keep for a month in the fridge when stored correctly. I'd love to see a video talking about the best ways to store greens in the fridge, whenever I try they quickly become limp, lifeless and gross, lucky if they make it a week before being thrown out.

Generally I dont like to store greens in the fridge, they are best stored in the garden, but sometimes before bolting, I will harvest in early morning, and store them. for lettuce, pick whole heads, remove bad leaves, put in a plastic bag with some holes in crisper drawer. What you do is rinse/soak greens to get all the dirt off. Then put them in a salad spinner and get most of the water out. Then store them in plastic (yikes!) or something friendlier maybe a dry tea towel and roll them up and store in crisper. I use a large ziplock bag for the greens and they are beautiful for days and days. But of course the greens start to oxidize immediatley after they are picked. So you would get the best nutrient value to eat them just picked. Hope this works for you!!
1. Thing to remember- NEVER use metal (neither scissors nor knife) to cut them! Use ceramic as he does or a plastic bladed implement or bare hands! Metal harms the plants & makes them brown fast.
2. There is special bags you can order & use to keep greens longer. I don't remember the brand name but it might be called 'Green' bags it is not exactly plastic but it allows Co2 to pass 'out' & the plant can remain fresher.
3. Wether harvesting to eat or not, keep all the lower leaves up off the soil- they gotta go compost fast or just away because they draw all the insects that hide under anything touching or dangling that the larvae can attach to & eat. If you have a raised bed like this, I say, start at one end & harvest all the outer leaves in a 3 or 4 foot block for the day. Juice it or whatever but stay consistent. Next day move further along until you have reached the next block. By the time you finish all 100 plants, you should be able to start the beginning again.

So...knowing that you rep!ant your beds, once the current crop is done, is there a reason why you cut the lettuce to the ground, rather than just pull it up, since you said that one was not going to regrow? Thanks for all the information you share year after year!
I know you use a lot of amazing things in your soil, so you rarely probably run into these problems. This question stems from my pepper plant, which it still just a baby seedlings (maybe 6-8 inches) and it has a calcium deficiency. The new growth is kind of deformed and bumpy easily recognizable.
My question for you is can you make a video about recognizing nutrient deficiencies! It's very rare to find a video on CZcams on this subject. Of course a Google search is quite easy to find this information, but I always trust the information on the internet. However I do trust your opinions, because everything I have tried that you've recommended have given me giant healthy plants! Currently I am using the Rock Dust to try to help the calcium deficiency, although I'm not sure that it will be a quick fix, because Rock Dust takes awhile to sink into the soil and start working.

Can you do a video on maintaining decorative cabbage/kale? Once mine matures its getting sooo large and top heavy. It has an 8 inch stalk above the ground and then the leaves. Not sure if I shouldve been pruning all along. They are nice for fall with deep purple coloring
When my lettuce starts to bolt like that and i cut the whole thing down, there’s a milky substance that comes from the stem. Is that ok to eat? Or should i remove all the leaves from the long stem. Thsnks
I'm growing about 10 lettuce plants in my garden but my chickens had gotten out and ate the leaves of the lettuce, kale and other things like that. Most of the plants came back, except one. One lettuce plant is just slowly dying and I don't know why. It has water and sunlight but it is still dying. Should I do a cut and come back or just completely remove it? When bok choy bolts and creates a young flowering shoot, those scapes are rather delicious and tender. When those are sold in markets in China they are snapped right up.
Seems like the best way to not waste food or lose viability in the garden is to juice the smoothies every day but label half of them as soup base & freeze for winter.

had failed garden year after year-then we were attacked by biting stinging mites,,,killed my dogs and almost killed us...30,000 $ later we're almost thru it--now we use cedar oil/cedarcide and just recently started lemon balm and spearmint gardening....i notice my container garden is doing very well-yard soil contaminated(mites,bad nematodes and poison)so,containers and raised (clean)beds it must be..the mints and lemon balm keep nearly all bad insects away...i mix my own compost with cedar saw dust from my art studio/work shop-tomatoes love it.use a ph and nutrient tester to keep everyone happy------thanks for all your vids,they've helped us a lot peace out ,,,,jeffrey from arkansas...so,glad you cured yourself,we're trying to do the same
Research 'Kleen Green' into Google. It's made from vegetable enzymes and will kill almost any pest made of protein which includes most parasites but is harmless to humans, animals and plants. Good to get rid of dog/cat fleas and parasites on plants. too! Hope this helps.

I live in Sierra Vista, AZ zone 8B 4700 feet elevation. How do you control ants? I’m on 2.5 acres and we have tons of ants in the garden. I’ve tried sugar and borax in a container but even though they ate and died, there are so many of them they just get replaced with more ants. Most farm aphids also. I’ve tried spraying with water, using organic neem oil and today cinnamon. I’ll check cinnamon tomorrow. Any advice? Help.

It is a tree collard. He propagates and sells them sometimes. I believe they are not true to seed so you will need to buy plants.

Where I live (south Alabama) the tree collards are plagued by caterpillars during the warm months and perhaps slugs as well. If I didn't go out and routinely inspect each plant and pick off the caterpillars, they'd be stripped.

Bolting is when a plant sends up a flower stalk and then makes seed. Lettuce bolts easily when the weather is too hot.

John, I enjoy your videos no doubt about it from the juicer videos to your gardening videos. But there’s way too much talk and sometimes you repeat yourself and I get lost and what the presentation is all about. Here’s how we trimmed the lettuce boom show us trimmed here trim it here and move on. It seems like we had to wait forever to get to the subject of the videoanyway I still enjoy them. There’s just too much talk and not enough action. Thank you very much for all that you do you’re very wise.

Right simple but if you don't know gardening and harvesting is complex as the saying from 1992 goes Ou est Mon Bok Choy now 2018 the seeds are in the organic rock dust worm casting enriched earth still learning from your teachings hash tag at waiting for the plants to rise and so on therefore Plant Dancing.
That would take a lot of plants to make a single salad.
I think you need to sell those greens.....there's no way you can eat all of that before it goes to seed. You have so much there! Maybe there's some homeless or food pantry that will take the excess. How to store heads of lettuce long-term? Will a basement cellar or underground cellar preserve the lettuce? How can lettuce be preserved without freezing it?
