    My entering the farming space was originally about getting a lifestyle that paid for itself. I could have dropped my money on a McMansion in a prestigious burb, but the idea of all the land, timber, my own pond, and it being able to pay for for itself was so alluring. Things took off fast, I was in the right place right at a time when a lot of documentaries came about the state of our food supply came out that scared people. We’re farming organically and regeneratively in 4 counties now. The best crop we’re raising is 7 farm kids.

    The only downside to multiple income streams is keeping it all organized. 😅 For me mine are very diverse, so sometimes a ball drops here or there. (Seedlings, haircutting, wedding hair, crochet slippers, pumpkins) The rest of the time I like having variety in my life, and something going on all the time that brings in just a little extra for our family.

    This was so helpful!! As someone who aspires to have a homestead it was an encouragement to here this. I haven’t seen many homesteaders share this type of information or should I say details about their income streams. This gives me hope for the future ❤

      Do you have a lot of help? I have three kids under 6 and I’m struggling to get dinner made. Feeling super defeated that I can’t muster up the energy or gusto to do these things. Any advice? We are on an “island” no help with kiddos, and I homeschool, too.

    This is all great information. Our current income streams on the farm include meat chickens and feeder pigs. Next on my list is adding some spice mixes to go with my chicken sales. I am also an affiliate with Earthley which covers my cost of my personal Earthley products which is super helpful. 😊

      Any tips for selling meat chickens? We want to start next year selling some to help cover the cost of ours.

    Good morning, Beth! It has been so fun to follow you again, but now here on CZcams. You were one of my very favorite ladies to follow on IG many years ago. But I struggle with screen time addiction so I had to cancel my IG account and have missed being able to follow the ladies that I had so loved on IG. I love the info you are sharing here! My husband and I (and our 4 kids ages 10-6mos) just moved onto a 2.5 acre lot. We’ve got an amazing old barn and lots of grass (about 1.5 is open grass) but it’s not high quality. I’m not trying to girlboss my way to retire my husband early or lean hard into that hustle culture, but I would love to create income streams on our homestead that I could do the majority of the work on so that we could create sustainable income flow to give my husband that option to work less off farm. I feel like everything you shared here is exactly how I feel. And your ideas for making money has been so eye opening to me!

      Aw hello!! So happy you can stay connected here!
      So excited for you and you new property!! And I have so many more thoughts to share about that topic. I’ll have a part 2 of this conversation out soon about how (once we decided to homestead) our journey progressed.
      Thanks for following!

    one thing I know growing up here in Montana on a ranch one thing we would do is sell fresh eggs and fresh milk and cream and in a small building at the end of the road and had the milk eggs into different refrigerators and they had the price for the eggs and milk and cream list on the doors and people could come get what they wanted and slipped the money in this lock box with there name and stuff any extra order they might need that we might have extra of and we call them let them know and if had extra you set something like that up and you make good money at it , it is just an idea

      Unfortunately selling milk like that is illegal in Michigan. You have to herdshares and contracts.

    Great ideas! Thank you for sharing this info. I really liked that you shared that even if it's $50-100 a month generated, that could be $600-1200 a year. We have a small farmstand and it only seems like we make a few dollars each day, but it pays for all of our chicken feed and garden expenses for the year.

    Thank you for such good ideas. I’m only on 3/4 of an acre and not nearly experienced, but some weeks I feel like I can barely offload the extra 3 dozen eggs we have 🥴

    Excellent video! I like the point about how some things are seasonal, so it’s good to have different things to do for different seasons. Our goal is to have my wife stay home full time. I hope that with different income streams/hustles, we can make that happen soon. I’d really like to do some freelance writing. Do you have any recommendations of who to contact and/or how to get started with that? New subscriber here! Be well. - Colin

    We butchered our second round of chickens for the year this weekend and we’ve talked about doing several more batches next year to sell to other people. Do you typically sell by the bird? By the pound? Ensure you have a certain profit margin? I would love to get to the point that what we sell covers the cost of what we eat each year!

    • @intentionalhomesteadingmi
      @intentionalhomesteadingmi  Před 8 měsíci

      We sell by the pound! This year we were at $4.75/lb and averaged 5# birds. We figure for every 2 we sell we cover the cost of 1 for us - but you can use this form to figure out your specific costs to help you see the potential: mailchi.mp/e1e5503509c7/meat-chicken-expense-calculator
