LYRICS
You and I in a little toy shop
Buy a bag of balloons with the money we've got
Set them free at the break of dawn
'Til one by one they were gone
Back at base bugs in the software
Flash the message: "something's out there!"
Floating in the summer sky
Ninety-nine red balloons go by
Ninety-nine red balloons
Floating in the summer sky
Panic bells, it's red alert
There's something here from somewhere else
The war machine it springs to life
Opens up one eager eye
Focusing it on the sky
Where ninety-nine red balloons go by
Take on me (take on me)
Take me on (take on me)
I'll be gone
In a day or two
Oh, the things that you say. Yeah.
Is it life or just to play my worries away?
You're all the things I've got to remember
You're shying away
I'll be coming for you anyway
Take on me (take on me)
Take me on (take on me)
I'll be gone
In a day or two
This is what we've waited for
This is it, boys, this is war
The president is on the line
As ninety-nine red balloons go by
Take on me (take on me)
Take me on (take on me)
I'll be gone
(In a day or two)
Take on me (take on me)
Take me on (take on me)
I'll be gone
(In a day or two)

Didn't realize these were both released in 1984. Having a real a-ha moment.
Also, I was born. Ah-HA!!!😁
ba dum ts....
Sorry, 99 Luftballons released early 1983 ;-)
Wow. İ love these songs 99 luftballons and aha. Great choice and great mix.
I didn’t realize there was an english version of 99 Luftballons by Nena 😄 🎈
So weird to hear it in English when you're used to the German version
I had no idea that A-Ha released songs in German.
Ja total! 😂
The English and German versions were both released around 1982/1983ish
Had the same thoughts- sounds weird! ;)
Nena did sing in English too, though. Just don't know when... :-)
It is amazing how talented every member of this band is from lead singer to backup singers, instruments to video editing, all top quality performances!!!
You two are so adorable, literally emcompasing the phrase: "you and I could make beautiful music together"
The line "take me on \ I'll be gone \ in a day or two" has a wildly different mood in the context of "99 luftballons"
indeed
Wow! Didn't put that together! nice!
Hence the term Mashup.
Pfft yes
We'll all be gone after we're nuked. But first -- let's dance. Very 80s ;-)
I’m SO glad you used that funky little synth groove from 99 red balloons in the breakdown!!!
Nataly's diction is so clear. I've heard Take on Me 100's of times yet could never make out what Morten was singing. LOL
You can tell she's gotten clearer over time. Even two years ago, her singing had some accent.
Had to look, she's completely American but took school in France when she was younger and older. Guess some of it didn't wear off in her singing.
Why is it the other way around to me? I immediately know the lyrics to Take On Me the first time I listen to it, and everytime I hear someone cover this song I'm like "what language is this? is this the same song?"
She speaks French the same way, beautifully.
I understood everything in the original recording except the phrase "in a day or two."
@@doublepinger The French helps with enunciation. It's a point of pride in French poetry and singing to make it ultra-clear and precise.
I love the classics from the 80s (I was in my 20s then), and I like to see young people trying a new version of the wonderful music. Bravo!
These two are precious and we must protect them at all costs.
They need to be put in a preserve somewhere in the back of the Stanford campus. There, they can safely graze on chaparral and watch the cars on I-280 while making more videos like this. Low stress, humane celebrity. It can be rough out there.
Every thursday I am at my 70 yo dad listening to the newest music and what we've found, exchanging our newfound treasures.. You guys make it every time 😁
Awww that makes me so happy to hear! Say hi to your dad from me :)
@@Pomplamoose do your existing Patrons get the CD too? I do hope so! Your last one is still in my car CD player!
Now for the hardest job of the year - which of your awesome tracks I like the best and should be on the album!
Well, not the newest music, your 70 year old dad was 34 when the two songs were popular.
Lol. You guys are amazing. Years later I’m still following you all. Thank you
Two of my all-time favorites. Love this!
As a German I Heard- the english Version for the first time and i‘m confused.
Apparently the German lyrics have NOTHING to do with the English ones?
@@Pomplamoose CZcams won't let me write both versions. In short, the beginning and the end are different, in the German version there is no "little toy shop" and she sings about singing a song about balloons, if you have time..
At the end of the german version, 99 years of war passed, no fighters, soldiers, just debris and one last balloon, let it fly.
I'm French, and it's the first time I'm hearing the English version too.
@@Pomplamoose they’re actually pretty close... the changes were minor.
@@Pomplamoose Au contraire, the English lyrics are quite close to the original German

It was released 1949. Good book, though
2 of my favorite songs from the 80's! I recall - I was 15 when 99 Luftbalons aired on a music video show and how "exotic" Nena was and the German version. And of course the awesome Take On Me animation/live person hybrid video, crushing on Bunty Bailey (the actress reading the comic book). Just like Modern ENglish - Melt With You, I never tire of these songs. The 80's was such a great era for music. I'm 52 now so these songs are quite nostalgic. This is an awesome mashup. And not just a mashup but an original blend. Please do more!
For those wondering:
The English version retains the spirit of the original narrative, but many of the lyrics are translated poetically rather than being directly translated: red helium balloons are casually released by the civilian singer (narrator) with her unnamed friend into the sky and are mistakenly registered by a faulty early warning system as enemy contacts, resulting in panic and eventually nuclear war, with the end of the song near-identical to the end of the original German version.
Also the UK version was released in 1984 whereas the German version was 1983
DANG!!! I feel like such an idiot - I had no idea that's what was going on!!!
That's one hell of a good analogy there, my friend. Straight to the point with no messing around.
Not quite the red balloons are what Russian nuclear missiles were called, the balloons released were just a metaphor, it wasn't a mistake rather a fear of genuine event. The song was written at the height of the cold war, when nuclear war was a real risk and it was likely to be fought in Germany, Forever Young was a similarly themed song released around the same time.
Got it. Same is true with songs that are English translated into Spanish. The best translation is Jesus Christ Superstar. Absolutely amazing how close it is to the original. As you know, you cannot translate directly otherwise it won't rhyme or have the right amount of syllables. I am not religious, but know the words of all the songs none of the songs deviate in the slightest from the meaning, it sounds like the Spanish version was the original. That song "Gloria" is originally Italian, but has a much different meaning in English; the Italian never suggests that she is crazy.
@@nickscott6813the story behind it is when the guitarist for Nena was at a concert in Berlin when they released a bunch of balloons and he wondered how the soviets would react to seeing a sudden mass blip on their radars emerging from West Berlin. So i think the song is much more literal.
God I’d forgotten that the lyrics to 99 Red Balloons were about nuclear war. What a song.
It was 1984.... around the peak of the cold war. Sting was singing about wondering if the Russians love their children too....
@@TheMirolab
But
War is stupid Boy
Is that just for the English version or was the German version also about nuclear war?
@@canaisyoung3601 Both versions.

Brilliant! Just brilliant!
Y'all doggin on the english lyrics but c'mon, 'The war machine springs to life / opens up one eager eye / focusing it on the sky / where 99 red balloons go by' -- c'mon y'all this some poetry here
Considering every time I hear the lyrics in either language I hear "99 dead baboons", well... :)
But you miss the lines about Fighter Pilots acting like Captain Kirk!
@@peteroneill5426 I agree, kind of a cheesy line, but it’s in the German version too.
The original German is more evocative, "99 Luftballons" (99 air balloons). It did remind me of SNL's Dieter skits (Mike Meyers) -- basically, there's a Cold War on and we all might get nuked and die -- but first, we must dance.
To think this song 99 luftballoon was about how close we came to nuclear war because of errant weather balloons is sobering..what a time

Here's a more literal translation of the German original for those interested in the differences. (The translation is partly stolen, I admit. No need to reinvent the wheel. I did edits while listening to the song, though.)
If you have some time for me
Then I will sing a song for you
About ninety-nine balloons
On their way to the horizon
If you happen to be thinking about me
Then I will sing a song for you
About ninety-nine balloons
And that such a thing comes from such a thing [very literal statment wondering how such absurd consequences can come from a little thing]
Ninety-nine balloons
On their way to the horizon
Were thought to be UFOs from space
Therefore a general sent
A flying squadron after them
To sound the alarm if true
Even though on the horizon there were
Only ninety-nine balloons
Ninety-nine jet fighters
Each was a great warrior
They regarded themselves as Captain Kirk
There was a great display of fireworks
The neighbors didn't understand
And soon felt harrassed
Even though on the horizon they were shooting
At ninety-nine balloons
Ninety-nine ministers of war
Match and petrol can (gasoline can) [note: yes, singular is used]
They considered themselves as clever people
Already on the scent of fat quarry
They shouted "War" and wanted power
Man, who would have thought
That someday it would come as far as this
Because of ninety-nine balloons
Ninety-nine years of war
Left no place for victors
There are no more ministers of war
Nor any jet fighters
Today i'm making my rounds
I see the world in ruins
I found a balloon
I think of you and let it fly
Steamrick the singular was used for lyrics/rynme or for any other particulary reason?
@@Impresso3dBlogspot Thinking about it now, probably because the plural of match would have taken too many syllables...
Thanks a lot for the translated lyrics. I understand a few words from the original since my grandparents used to speak in Yiddish, but I never got it whole and never was sure of translated versions (which have to be adapted to fit metrics and rhyme, thus sometimes leaving out important stuff).
The English language version was a UK number one and I remember hearing the German original at the time too. This translation is much better and would have fitted with the general bleakness of the time. Glad to see that Captain Kirk is in both versions though!
I just jumped out of my chair and started dancing with my headphones on and looking crazy... bought back memories of my teenage days... thank you for a great mashup again

😂 Hahaha 99 balloons is from Germany where I come from. I would have never imagined to mash it up with Take On Me! What a brilliant cover. I am dancing 🥳💃
High fiving you all the way from California! I can't wait to visit Germany again. I had the best time touring there back in...2011? Wow. So long ago.
America had to add a color to make the song "fit" because we don't specify "luft" balloons. The only time we make a distinction is if we are talking about water balloons. Otherwise, air is understood if we just say "balloon."
@@stevzky if I heard "air balloon" my brain would think "hot air balloon"

Something about this song makes me want to run out and buy a bass . . .
Awesome mash-up. I was a metal-head back then, but secretly loved 99 balloons. 😎 Glad you picked it.
In high school, I was a member of the "we hate disco" club. But I secretly had a crush on Donna Summer and Gloria Gaynor. Luckily, no one outted me at the time. Now I'm outting myself.
Bass is a cool instrument. When I got my bass 10 years ago, it was a low-middle quality (like a step above walmart lol), and with amp and everything was about $350. Hopefully they aren't more expensive these days 😅
Flawless mashup, and your banter at the end was sweet! Well done!
I literally was just talking about this music coming back. I like it more now than when it was fresh

Hearing "Neunundneunzig Luftballons" in English is so weird O.o
As a young teenager in the early 80's I heard the English version first on Top of the Pops, but when I bought the 7 inch single it had the original German language version on the B side. I've been familiar with both versions for about four fifths of my life, and loved both even though I do not speak German or have any fleeting familiarity with the language. I am also extremely fond of A-Ha's Take on Me so I found this mashup quite satisfying.
ok, didn’t cite the exquisite departure: “on” down an 8ve - whoa
then, intervallic on 3rd iteration - genial!

Very fun, very '80s mashup. While I'm not normally moved by a lot of 'Top 40' pop music, I've been quite taken with "Take On Me," (pun intended) ever since it was first released. It has an absolute killer hook and, IMHO, the music video for the song is still one of the best-ever examples of the art. Thank you, everyone!
I don't know what happened, but Take On Me went from being a lost gem that you were lucky to hear on the radio more than a handful of times per year to a HUGELY overplayed song that now must be avoided at least 3 times an hour, at least in my local radio market in low-cal, So.Cal. [where the money is plastic & people are too!] Something happened that Bohemian Rhapsodied it, but I don't recall it being featured in a movie a la' what Wayne's World did for _BR_ [and led to a general resurgence of Queen's catalog as well, which is also good, but I wish _BR_ was still a secret known to only the cognisceti instead of being played to death. C'est la vie...]
