We used to build racing mowers years ago and also used the Spicer six speed transmissions. I liked them because you really only had to use the clutch going into first or reverse after that you couldn’t miss a gear. You might skip a gear, but it didn’t hurt anything. We also figured 3 inch pulleys on the transaxle was about as fast as you’re going to get because when you go any smaller, there’s just not enough surface area to hold a belt. I think 11 1/2 diameter pulley is what we used to run on the engine and we liked the 12 horse Briggs single cylinders with the governor disconnected.
Most of the mower transaxles are pretty stout. I have a Spicer with a much faster gear ratio that I'm gonna try. The transaxle in it now is a Peerless MST206 6-speed. Very reliable gearbox. I have found the same limitation with the 3" pulley, which I am running. I've tried 2.5, and after two runs up the road, the belt was toast. I'm running a 7" on the engine as that's the largest I can fit with the stock clutch location. I've actually had this machine about 10 years. Around 6 years ago, I did most of what's done to it now. Last summer, I dug it out and made some major changes, and I still have a lot I want to do. Thanks for watching

If the machine carries you most the journey its okah to have to carry it out of the mud a few times . Lol awesome ride footage. How did you extend your rear axles

I welded bolts to the end of the axles to extend them. But importantly, the hub still rides on the axle. The bolts just allow them to be pushed out a bit and still be retained. Same on the front J-spindles. I am also running 2" wheel spacers all around.
@DieselFuelNetwork yea trailer tires doing what they can. Very nice they appeared to be customized rear axles. Thanks for elaborating on the construction. Wider the better when your reaching those speeds

It was fun but every time i slowed down or stopped it would die so i had to carry around a bottle of gas with me . something was wrong with the carb but i didn't really care anyway it still ran . Then the belt fell off and it's ben parked since.
What control arms? The axle is solid mounted to the chassis. The tie rod is solid steel with heim joints, and the steering box is stout. I've been running this front-end setup for years, and it's held up fine. Don't get me wrong, this machine is by no means safe over 25mph, but the front axle and steering is not an issue. Thanks. I'm not sure what you mean about the throttle cable. It's working as designed. I set it up to have a long travel pedal for more linear operation. The governor is removed. These engines run out of steam between 4500-5000 rpm with the stock cam. There would be no benefit to running more than 87 octane, as these engines have low compression and mild ignition timing. If I advance the timing, I will probably run 93 just to be safe. Thanks for watching

Hay man, I swear to God I know you from some where but can't remember from where. I grew up in St Paul Park if that means anything to you. Contact me, kick ass tractor man. Looks like allot of fun man.
@@DieselFuelNetwork well that's cool, you look just like a guy I grew up with. His name was Terry but he ended up moving away. Any how what your doing reminds me of the stuff we all did growing up. Had allot of fun, got into allot of trouble but it was all worth it. My best friends father would go elk hunting every winter so for a short couple of years we would take out his dad's brand new 340 TNT F/A ski doo until it was too warm out one year and burned a hole in one of the pistons trying to make it across some 3M property and the snow was to sticky to get that sled up on top to catch air and burned her up. We got back to my friends garage and he just sat there on the sled depressed and trying to deal with what his dad is going to do to him when he gets home. And one of his older brothers was really giving him a hard time making things worse. So like 45 minutes go by and I'm looking around the garage and what did I see, a motor next to a 640 hurth that's painted red and I ask Dave " hay" what's that other motor on the shelf over there!!! It looks just like your dad's motor. And Dave says " ya" that's Bodines old 440 out of the sled he just jumped out. He went on to say that the seal's are out of the lower end. So I sat back down just as depressed as my friend cuz I know what his dad's going to tell me. Bill go home and don't come back till your told you can!!! I've heard it more than a few times from his dad. So just out of curiosity I took a small tape measure and measured the distance on the head bolts and the jug bolts and I'll be a son of a bitch!!! There the same!! I yelled!!! My buddy says " what did you say"? I said there the same Dave, let me switch them from your dad's motor to this one! What do we got to loose!!!! And Dave didn't hesitate, he said get it done... I was excited cuz I don't see nothing stopping this from happening. The only thing that could screw this up I was telling myself is the fact that we are using the 340 bottom half with the 440 top half. There both F/A motors so why wouldn't it work. I was all worried about the ports not being the same but I'll be damned they lined up. Now I'm on the down hill buttoning up the rest of the stuff and everything has to be perfect becouse of Dave's dad!!! I looked at my buddy and said well let's see if she starts. Three pulls and it comes to life!!! Dave yells at me to open the garage door and I do. He shoots out the garage and locks up the brake and tells me to jump on so I close the garage door turn around and go to jump on the sled and before I know it I was sitting on my ass watching him shoot down the driveway slide sideways into the street with that crazy grin and laugh my buddy's got and he gun's it!!!! Both skies are off the ground and he's gone!!! I couldn't believe how much more faster that sled was. Wow!!! Dave come shooting by again and yelled at me to open up the garage. So I open it up and he comes flying into the garage shuts it off and is yelling and rejoicing about how good a job I did on it and how it fly's. So I really thought I bailed my best friend out of a really bad situation, a long with myself as well. Cleaned up the garage, put the old parts on the motor on the shelf to cover our ass's and hopefully everything will be cool!!! Right!!!! His Dad came back took it for a ride in the morning and didn't say nothing to nobody. Guess he got thrown from the sled just crossing the street to the trails and that's when he must have put two and two together and realized just what we had done to his sled. His dad just coming back into town had to go down to the fire hall until around four or five o'clock so me and Dave were hanging out in the garage thinking we are golden cuz Dave is telling me his dad had the sled out that morning and nothing was said. So we were not expecting his dad's rath but as soon as his dad came home he walked into the garage, thrown me right out of his way, I landed against the stove barrel and melted my choppers and a nice hole in my parka looks me dead in the eyes and says""" Baillie take your ass home!!! Your grounded from here till spring!!!! I didn't waist any time getting the hell out of there!!! My poor buddy, you should of heard his voice! You could hear the fear in his voice. Begging for mercy from his dad!!! All I know is I didn't even call down there to check on him. I waited till we went back to school after Christmas vacation. Lol. I guess what pissed his dad off is when he crossed the street on his sled that morning and hit the throttle the sled through a rooster tail of snow into the street and his dad wasn't ready for that kind of power to ramp up that fast and left him sitting in the street on his ass as the sled jumped up on top of the snow bank and rolled a few feet forward. But what maid him so pissed off was he is the fire Marshal of power home town and someone driving by that knew him stopped, rolled down there window and proceeded to say some slick comment to my buddy's dad. That's what pissed him off! He was embarrassed!!! And it was our fault! Lol. No good deed goes unpunished!!! WOW, what a mess we were growing up in my home town! I miss those days.....
Peerless MST206 6-Speed. It's the best light duty mower transaxle. They are very common and usually found in craftsman mowers from late 90s to well into the 2000s.
@user-is3bp6ii4n I'm using a Peerless mst206. The spicer transaxles are not considered to be as good, although I haven't used one yet. I do have a Spicer that has a much faster gear set than my Peerless that I'm going to be trying soon.
Is that a 74-76 camaro in yer driveway? I cant tell the year, but i know its older than 78 being that was the first year they went to fiberglass bumpers 😁 camaros.....my favorite car
Yup. 76. I think it's one of the greatest looking cars ever. I'm biased, though, as this used to be my dad's car that he had since before I was born. There will hopefully be some videos with it this summer.
Awesome man! A 76 LT was my first car. they indeed look awesome. I have always wanted a 71½ split bumper in canary yellow.....something about those split bumper do t foe me 😁🤘
There are a few build videos on my channel. It was more of a second stage rebuild as I originally built it before I did youtube. I will be doing an overview video soon to show everything that's done to it. I am also working on a couple of other similar builds for the channel. Thanks for watching
I assume you mean in the woods. I just had to watch it again to see what you're talking about. I don't think there is any unnecessary throttle usage. But it's worth noting that it won't just idle along in gear without eventually stalling. It's not pulleyed optimally for slow driving. And I think that's just how I like to drive it. Thanks for watching.
The whining sound is from the straight cut gears in the transmission. It's especially pronounced because the transmission is being overdriven well beyond its designed maximum input RPM.
Yes, it would definitely be nice to have suspension. I've had a few ideas to make something work, but I may end up just building another one to try what I'm thinking.
u tube's twit well done put on mabey those ballon tyres. will go over those long logs , do u watch cares and camaras and red beards gagage any way good video will u change the con rods in that motor as they do brake mine did red beard has a video on how to change them to billet rods much stronger
Thanks. I have seen cars and cameras. I haven't seen red beard. I have another build I'm working on, which will be on big off-road tires. This machine is built more for sliding around and going fast. I still have the stock rods, and I've been running this same engine for many years. The important thing is that I keep it under 5000 rpm, and most of the time, I'm not revving it over 4500 rpm. Only real mods are an equal length 2-1 header, and the carb is jetted to match. So the engine will last forever like that. Thanks for watching 👍
I've never really driven past one. Only time I saw one ,I was turning around in someone's driveway and he didn't even look at me. I think it looks enough like a lawn tractor that I would be fine depending on how fast I'm going. I always joke that if I just put a slow moving vehicle triangle on the back it would be as legal as any farm tractor lol
I didn't notice how muddy it was till I drove in. I wasn't really planning the off-road portion of my trip. I have a set of off-road capable wheels/tires for it, but I prefer this setup. It's much more fun on a loose surface and looks better on this machine, in my opinion. Thanks for watching and commenting
I'd love to. But It costs a hell of a lot more money. I basically built this thing for free. Seriously, I've collected a lot of parts from working at a mower shop for years and had a bunch of random metal around. I originally built most of it about 8 years ago, and just recently did the frame extension, trailer wheels, seat and fuel tank setup. I definitely do want to build a proper hot-rod / lakes-modified some day. Thanks for watching

What are you using for a transmission
Yeah that's what I wanted to know? There's another guy in the comments said they used Spicer, is that what you use aswell?
Peerless MST206 6-Speed. It's the best light duty mower transaxle. They are very common and usually found in craftsman mowers from late 90s to well into the 2000s.
@user-is3bp6ii4n I'm using a Peerless mst206. The spicer transaxles are not considered to be as good, although I haven't used one yet. I do have a Spicer that has a much faster gear set than my Peerless that I'm going to be trying soon.
Where are you locates?
I am in Redding, California.
New York. Hudson Valley/Catskills
What transmission are you useing
Peerless MST206 6-speed
Is that a 74-76 camaro in yer driveway? I cant tell the year, but i know its older than 78 being that was the first year they went to fiberglass bumpers 😁 camaros.....my favorite car
Yup. 76. I think it's one of the greatest looking cars ever. I'm biased, though, as this used to be my dad's car that he had since before I was born. There will hopefully be some videos with it this summer.
Awesome man! A 76 LT was my first car. they indeed look awesome. I have always wanted a 71½ split bumper in canary yellow.....something about those split bumper do t foe me 😁🤘
Do you have any videos building it
There are a few build videos on my channel. It was more of a second stage rebuild as I originally built it before I did youtube. I will be doing an overview video soon to show everything that's done to it. I am also working on a couple of other similar builds for the channel. Thanks for watching
It's time to build one with a turbo
sound like a HARLEY
Why do you keep stepping on the throttle so much?
I assume you mean in the woods. I just had to watch it again to see what you're talking about. I don't think there is any unnecessary throttle usage. But it's worth noting that it won't just idle along in gear without eventually stalling. It's not pulleyed optimally for slow driving. And I think that's just how I like to drive it. Thanks for watching.
What is this whistling sound?
The whining sound is from the straight cut gears in the transmission. It's especially pronounced because the transmission is being overdriven well beyond its designed maximum input RPM.
i still have that motor if anyone interested in closet in garage probaly has 10 hours on it someone stole that carb off of it i saw
You should really put shocks on it it would drive smoother
Yes, it would definitely be nice to have suspension. I've had a few ideas to make something work, but I may end up just building another one to try what I'm thinking.
She is a burly build 👍😎
Thank you. 🚜💨💨💨
425 Lb
u tube's twit well done put on mabey those ballon tyres. will go over those long logs , do u watch cares and camaras and red beards gagage any way good video will u change the con rods in that motor as they do brake mine did red beard has a video on how to change them to billet rods much stronger
Do cop ever bought you
I've never really driven past one. Only time I saw one ,I was turning around in someone's driveway and he didn't even look at me. I think it looks enough like a lawn tractor that I would be fine depending on how fast I'm going. I always joke that if I just put a slow moving vehicle triangle on the back it would be as legal as any farm tractor lol
umm, just how much traction did you expect to have when you ended up in the ravine? SMH 'you need tires, son!'
Sounds like a V8
Bikers call that a death rattle.
😆 🚜💨💨💨
All that work. Why not just build a roadster?
I'd love to. But It costs a hell of a lot more money. I basically built this thing for free. Seriously, I've collected a lot of parts from working at a mower shop for years and had a bunch of random metal around. I originally built most of it about 8 years ago, and just recently did the frame extension, trailer wheels, seat and fuel tank setup. I definitely do want to build a proper hot-rod / lakes-modified some day. Thanks for watching
put suspension on it :)
That may be something I do in the future. Or I might just do it on another build
I can't hear a dang word this dude is saying ...
Hahaha, sorry. I probably didn't say anything important. Thanks for watching
@@DieselFuelNetwork awesome video nonetheless!
you allowed to swear on u tube dont think so
I usually cut out any swearing. Sorry. I just didn't feel like doing it this time
Ok I'm sure you are just gods gift to man and have never sworn
@@DieselFuelNetworkI like when people swear ...... they are just words
You can swear on yt they just derank your video. You can better get away with it later in the vid.
Damn plastic gears I got me a brass one from Amazon 😊
