iRobot Roomba 780 Charging error 5 - Bad Capacitor

- I was having problems with charging error 5 on Roomba 780. Same thing with new batterie. Tried resetting, this and that… nothing helped.
I even measured voltage from the PSU and compared it with another and the voltage was OK, but clearly the problem was when PSU is connected to a load.
At last I opened the PSU. The problem was a bad capacitor in power supply. It had a hole on the top like someone punctured it, usually they leak or get buffed but this one didn't.
I also don't understand why they use those cheap Chinese no name capacitors on a Roomba which is not particularly cheap device.
Wanted to make this video only because I’ve found tons of forum threads on Roomba charging errors and didn’t find much about power supply causing them.
Sorry for bad footage.
I've tried to replace the battery, clean the battery connector, clean de dock station connector, ... no results 😢. After watch this video I changed the same capacitor (470uF x 35V). There is only one 470uF capacitor in the power supply. Easy to find it. The defect was resolved!!! No more charging error 5!!!! Thank you a lot, friend!!!!
Thanks a lot to all !!!!
Problem description: "Error 5 -charging error" after approximately 30 minutes of charging.
iRobot Roomba series 800 (5.5 years old) .
In forward to what was advised here , I've replaced the 470 uF/35v capacitor and problem resolved !!!!
No more charging error occurs . The device is being charged as expected .
The capacitor ,BTW, didn't look burn or dramatically damaged ....maybe a little bit swollen.
They wanted more then 150$ for a new Dock-In charger ,while replacing the capacitor took 5 minutes and less then 1 dollar cost.
I strongly recommend to try it on !
Hi. Thanks for the tip. I almost bought a new battery. Roomba 876 dock station 5 years of usage. The same error 5 after 10-15 minutes of charging. Changing bloated capacitor SAMXON 470mf 35v on 1500mf 25v solved my problem.
Thanks!!!
I repaired my Roomba =)
Thanks for reminding me that it can be the adapter as well! Mine is acting up. So, I'll first swap out the batteries AND the adapter before I'm gonna buy a replacement. :-)
Hello, can you please let me know where I can purchase the capacitator replacement you used to replace the broken capacitor In this roomba video?
Great album for sure.
Thank you for your video. What is the capacitor symbol and specs, where did you buy it, any link? I have the same problem
Thank yooooouuuu Mine was almost intact, wasn't bloat, removed it, checked with multimeter, was bad, same capacitor. changed, FIXED! Really really thank you for share with us.
I have changed both the big capacitors on my psu, with new two capacitors with exactly same charateristics, but still have error 5 on my Roomba.
Why? 😞😞
Battery already changed.. 🤷🏻♂️
News: I changed the PSU with a new one.
Again ERROR 5!
Why?
Next time discharge the capacitor before doing anything else. I've found 300V in mine (Roomba 770's charger). It also has the cheap caps.
Yeah I forgot :(. It's not the first time I got electrified by a charged capacitor :P. Those cheap PSU's don't have a bleeding resistor...
Thank You.
at was the fix on an 88 charger as well. 470uf 35v. It's a shame no Radio Shacks anymore, had to get 3 pack from Amazon for $5.99
Hey I opened my PSU and didnt find anything wrong with the capacitors (no bloat or holes) and still getting error 5, any idea what I could be? same model as yours btw
mine wasnt bloat, but was bad values of capacitance, changed it and now it's working back!!!
Спасибо, мне тоже помогла замена данного конденсатора на румбе 876. Старый был вздут.
Hello Mr. Roko Šoštar :-)
I would like to ask,
After replacing it with new ones,
There is no problem?
Correct
I have spare 35V 3300uF, will it harm if I use this instead 35v 470uF
I think it'll be ok if it fits inside
pretty decent video. maybe a few more close-ups of the offending capacitor - still, i was able to fix mine due to this. Also, for those of you complaining about the music, i didn't like it either, but did you know you can mute a video and still watch it ?
Thank for the video, hate the shitty music but the video was helpful.
Thank you for liking my video, but I don't understand why you all don't like this gangsta shit I'm listening :/
Thanks for the video. I think this might be my Roomba's problem. Also, is that Snoop you're listening to? I dig it. Pay no attention to the haters -- you're providing a solution to a problem!
C-Murder "Down for my niggas"
LMFAO! @2:10
Must have had a bit of charge in there LOL!
Amps hurt :(
Shouldn't have to mute the music to avoid listening to that garbage. What if he said something important?
Music is just fine, why do you all hate this music ?XD
Language
Starts out OK and probably has good content but the music is obnoxious....couldn't stand it after 45 seconds
You seem like a smart guy, why listen to such stupid "music"?
whats wrong with the music just because you don't like it does not mean he shouldn't
Chanted profanity does not equate to music. Nothing to learn here, move on.
no any explanation. i am not interested to see you dirty room, let us know wich capasitor and where, and, of course, result. dislike
Why do we need to watch you smoking and listening to your kind of music? Would prefer some vocal explanation instead
@@maryannborg184 welcome to internet. If you don't like it, take the damn thing to the repair shop. This is incredible.....
@@marcoscobos2692 in Maryanne’s defense why couldn’t he have just explained what he was doing at the time? That way it would’ve helped a lot more people who don’t have the technical know-how to follow along with what he’s doing. He could’ve explained what to look for in determining a bad capacitor along with some of the tools he was using such as the solder wick etc and tips to install like making sure of the polarity of the cap and such. I can never understand why people make videos without talking when it would make things so much more clear to others who aren’t as knowledgeable. I mean isn’t that the whole idea of posting a video? What’s the point in showing something to only those who already know how?
