This may sound odd but in a cryptic way, this story reminds me so much of Beetlejuice.
As if the two protagonists were drowned in that very creek on their way to the same house, and the city people who came were forced out for the ghosts who were *local*, and fitted in.

Possible spoiler warning:
So...what I got from the story is that Ethel and her husband were the parents of the child that had died. Maybe the old woman was a nanny or maybe even the grandmother and Ethel had driven them in her car over the bridge. She lost control of the car and the car went under water, drowning the child and the old woman. Ethel escaped. Her husband and the townspeople don't like to talk about it because Ethel had some sort of nervous breakdown and that traumatic event was kept in the recesses of her mind.
What do you guys think?
Nah, I don't think so. She shows a lot of distaste toward the child especially before she reflects and feels some pity toward the two, there's no suggestion at all that she "knows" them. I suppose there could be some twist that she picked up random people and was responsible for their deaths, but honestly, I think this is just a "contemporary" twist on a classic ghostly legend. There are many "vanishing hitchhiker" stories out there. Of course, few told so well as what Jackson has written.
What a creepy little story. Ethel is a real push over. God, she is so cringing in her desire to belong . And so blind to the hints being given. Such a simple story but with so much foreboding.
Yes; one of the ways the story is brilliant is that there is no overt danger, yet you feel the growing dread along with them.

Yes. Shirley had a knack for repeating some things and staying in the "familiar" - which is a little odd for someone with a wonderful imagination such as she had. I have - in other stories - read about the Montagues & the children's rhyme "Go in and out the windows" for instance. One of her daughters commented on her "odd little perfectionisms"
@@scotnick59 Some of her characters are named after other authors of her day, such as Mr Walpole and Mr. Berensford. She was a quirky character herself.

Looks like a main, two-way highway right outside their front door. Dangerous for their cats or their dog to cross the street. Somebody better slow down (& it needs to be enforced).
The ghosts were real, or the whole story is a methapor about learning how to cope with changing environtments?
You often cannot be sure with Jackson, but I'd say they're real.
She was so annoying almost wished she got her come uppance.

Wonderful. This story makes me want to do a poo in my pants. And when I say 'want', I mean I literally want to do one... Nothing can stop me, nothing whatsoever, except stopping reading the story abruptly. But even then, I still want to do a poo, and just as soon as the reading starts back up, Lo and behold, I end up wanting to do one even more intensely. Now, all I need to do is actually follow through with my desire regardless of the consequences and do that poo I've been wanting to do throughout this story. Many thanks indeed... 👍

Some constructive criticism- You sound like you're reading a children's book and it's killing any creepyness of the story.
Completely disagree. Shirley Jackson sets her tales in ordinary towns filled with ordinary folks. The twists aren't jump scares or screams, they're the insidious uncanny that lurks beneath the everyday. The narrator is PERFECT.
