Two years ago when my husband decided retirement was in the not too distant future we planned ahead by buying a second fridge/freezer for the basement and utilizing our spare bedroom as a second pantry area. People laugh when we say we buy 20 pounds of chicken or a case of peeled crushed tomatoes but as he comes up on one year retired we still don’t need to tap our retirement accounts or social security.
We are doing the same. I love from scratch cooking and having a full freezer and pantry helps so much.
Same here, When I ordered a whole cow instead of the usual half last year people laughed and thought I was crazy. Guess who doesn't have to go spend crazy amounts of money on Beef at the store? We don't buy beef from the store anyway and haven't for many many many years but this last time I decided a full and yes we did have to buy a second freezer to put my homemade sauces, the chicken and pork in and veggies in. But that is ok. The beef is so much tastier too in my opinion

Tip, put all paper plastic and mylar bags in a plastic bin with lid. We did this and lost lots of food to mice. Even some bugs eat through paper packages
I was going to say the same thing. Even avoid storing anything in cardboard down there at all.....as it will absorb a lot of moisture and smell moldy.
...get a cat and you won't have any problems with mice for long.
I put all of my dried goods to include flour in 5 liter glass jars. I got rid of all paper, plastic and cardboard the food came in.

@@swisschalet1658 cats outside...mice inside. It's never helped us. Rat magic sprinkled around the house does but it only last 3-4 months then you have to repeat it
The foundation walls were the 1st thing I noticed and how cool they looked. Glad you went with restoring them rather than covering them up.

@@FarmhouseonBoone yes. If you have ever have seen crumbling brick it's because it's old brick ( which is softer then today's brick) was pointed wrong and couldn't breath and expand so it cracks and crumbles.
I love that you took a non traditional and unfinished basement and made it beautiful. Rather than spending thousands on finishing it, you just made it work for your family and it looks great.

I have a 130 year old farmhouse and did the same thing. However- if you build it they will come - MICE!! Be vigilant!
Yes and they will chew on the plastic lids of glass jars too. They only thing I can store where mice are is all glass or metal cans (lids and all have to be metal or glass)
I recommend putting your flour in plastic bag over the flour bag and store in freezer keeps the weavels out tip
I'm sure it's been mentioned but if you have a rodent problem those cardboard and cello packages will attract mice if not something else. We had one bag of dog food we stored in our old basement and the mice got in and multiplied like mad. One day alone we caught a dozen of them. It took quite a while to get things under control, they made a mess of everything in the basement. Also, check your canned goods as you use them because mice "communicate" with other mice by using their bladders(correction in my comment: it's like they don't have bladders,🤦🏻♀)and pee on everything as they move around. I'm not trying to tell you what to do just sharing a few issues we had. Take care Lisa...by the way I love your home store! 🤗

This is so true Debra. I had an issue at one time and the exterminator said the same thing. Rays and mice use urine to mark their territories. They reproduce every 3 weeks and have large litters.
I always tell my family, "Shop the basement first. " I love having that & with rising prices, it has saved us a lot.
We also have what feels like a small grocery store in our basement. I love shopping my shelves! 😊
Keeping inventory and shopping sales or replacing used items a few at a time has saved hundreds for our family.
I do feel extremely blessed too!

I’m so glad you didn’t cover the basement walls. They’re just beautiful. When my mom passed, I wanted to renovate her old farmhouse. It could have been beautiful but my husband was not going to do that. I love old homes. They have so much personality and yours is beautiful. You amaze me at how much you do in a day.
TIP: wrote such a great little family story, got up to go get the name of something and swoosh-story gone. Short version straight from my Grandmother-to keep pests (not roaches, not mice) but the little bugs that get in cardboard boxes of food and bags of rice, etc. Purchase or make the 3"x4" favor bags used in Weddings and Showers. Fill with new dried Bay Leaves. Hang or place throughout the pantry-wherever you store pasta, etc. I'll be 62 this year--have done this for 41 years-started as a new wife. Had to call her when I found those weevils or moths or whatever they are in my first pantry as a new wife. I also put individual leaves on shelves too. I have never had bugs inside of packages of anything. So I have to wonder if the bugs get inside the flour or rice or pasta at the warehouse, or the store? I don't think they are packaged in there. Because-I would have had them at some point throughout the years and I never have since I started using the dried Bay Leaves. Anyway-it's cheap, it's all natural, no stinky chemicals! And when at all possible, I put food into glass jars. Estate sales are my friend!
How often do your replace? I have used them in with my food but not sure how long they last?

If you freeze your flour and rice in the store packaging for about 3 days then allow to come to room temperature this will kill any bugs it was harbouring. Then go ahead and store n something airtight ( and pest proof)

Those buckets need a vapor barrier between them and the floor. Plastic is porous and can absorb odor and a bit of moisture without an air gap and vapor barrier.
Some of those small plastic bins will be an invitation for mice. I have even had mice try to chew through a metal lid on a glass jar. They are always an issue in old homes during winter. I use a lot of glass gallon jars to keep the mice out. A few good cats help too.
You are on the mark with the repointing. He wasn't lying.

Living on a farm myself, I would make a suggestion. Mice….do not keep anything in paper/ plastic bags, that can be chewed through and contaminated. That’s too much food to just go to waste and it only takes 1 mouse,

I’m working on a basement‘convenience store”’ !! We have had a pantry, and my grown kids would come to the house for supper or other occasions, and before they left, would comment, “Let’s go shopping at moms!” Made my heart happy!!!
Pull your shelves away from the wall. Leave enough space so you can walk behind the shelves. This will allow you to restock from the back.
I live in England where a large percentage of the housing stock is hundreds of years old. Repairs with standard mortar and render(usually carried out in the 1970s) are a big problem - leading to all kinds of problems with leaks and cracking and damp which would’ve been avoided by using lime. Your historic guy is 100% right.
I live in a 1870 home with the same type of foundation! Unfortunately, the previous owner painted over all the stone white, so I can't see the stone anymore, but the mortar was done incorrectly and is hollow because of condensation and water not allowing my stone to breathe, like you mentioned. Thank you for listening to the historic restoration expert and doing it correctly!

WOW WOW WOW! Our 220 year old stone cellar has big uneven flagstones as flooring- we do have a "convenience store" down there with our homegrown ferments, vegetables, canned jams, jellies, pickles, etc. But WOW your cellar is BEAUTIFUL!!! Nice flat floor, and high ceiling....stunning. Well done you!!!❤

We used the basement for the furnace and water heater etc . Then there was the cellar, the cellar was a separate room ours had a dirt floor and old stone wall like yours it was a damp cool dark place. That is where we stored food , potatoes in a bin , and apple bin , canned food , buckets of cookies a big box of bananas basically any food that mom found for a bargain . Oh that cellar was like a candy store sometimes. It was a walkout basement so we could sneak into the cellar and help ourselves to ripe bananas, the five gallon bucket of cookies mom always baked for Christmas oh my that poor cookie bucket was almost all crumbs by the time nine kids pawed through for there favorite kind , much to moms chagrin😅

Perfect use of space. Way to go! And beautifully done. What a great place to store your fresh fruits and vegetables during harvest and canning season as well. I miss the basement of my childhood. This reminds me of what my parents longed for it to be. There were 9 of us children at home when I was growing up and absolutely every single space in our home had multiple uses. Again, let me say, this is beautiful to me as well! ❤

Mice will chew through plastic, so practice pest control and check your stock often.

Hi Lisa. The foundation restoration looks beautiful, but mainly it will support your house foundation for generations. If you want to mitigate rodent and bug infestation you really need to use glass containers for your food storage. Mice and rats can chew through those plastic bins and leaving paper packages out on the shelves is like just giving the mice an open free lunch. Moisture will encourage mold as well. Perhaps if you get an indoor mouser cat ( not every cat is good at mousing) to keep in the house only and let the barn cat take care outside, that could help somewhat. The large plastic bins with all the flour, wheat and rye will only keep them out so long, but mice can gnaw through that plastic. I had a friend who found mice making nests in the bins with holiday decorations and paper goods.

Oh, I'm so excited! I found your channel this week and I love it. It takes me back to when my boys were young. I have5 sons age 48 - 42. They are wonderful men. I home schooled the youngest4 starting when the youngest started7th grade. You're videos are so encouraging. Thank you for sharing and they do grow up fast. Thank you for sharing this. I have a basement pantry area, too, and I'm so glad for the extra food storage space. We have a really small home, and that basement pantry enables us to buy and store bulk food and extra canned and dried goods. The one thing that I discovered pretty quickly was that I needed to store everything that goes downstairs in either glass, tin, or heavy plastic buckets to keep the occasional mouse from chewing through packaging. I use heavy plastic totes with lids to contain things like bags of oatmeal and packages of pasta. We don't see mice very often, thankfully. But having the food in mouse-proof packaging makes me feel better.
Good idea to put expiration dates on outside of packaging so stock gets used before it expires.
I have my extra pantry downstairs in the basement too. That way I have only one of each thing in the kitchen and it doesn’t get crowded. 😊

I would’ve thought that a basement that old would have been dank,dark, and creepy, but it is a wonderful space! It’s a shame that the beautiful rock work is hidden downstairs. Glad you kept the natural beauty. I bet it gave you so much more room upstairs! Those metal racks are just the best! We used them in a bakery where I used to work, and they’re still using them! That was in 1999! Adding that vinyl rug was brilliant! 👏🙌🏻
Love that you call it your basement grocery store. That what my family (that does not understand having extra on hand) has called it for YEARS! And I gladly call it that now myself. I was so glad to have it during the crazy of 2020 and still still to this day. So nice to just go downstairs and not have to run to the store.

Living on the coast, we don’t have a basement but we do have a garage. Next month we are going to rent a dumpster & clear out as much as possible the clutter of our garage (things we haven’t used in years) & put up shelving for the things we do want to keep & extra supplies like toilet paper & food storage! We are of course going to donate things as well! The goal will be more efficiency of use of space & actually have a car in our garage!
Hopefully your garage won’t get too hot in the summer for the food.
Actually we are planning to store toilet paper & other non food & probably rarely used appliances on the shelving. When I said food, I was thinking canned goods & that type of thing.

It was a little discouraging until I just kept praying for wisdom on where to store extra things. Just read about it:) Just be vigilant

This is the dream! 😅 We are slowly trying to do something similar in our basement. Already have a few metal shelves set up, but definitely need to organize the rest of our stuff. This gives me the motivation to start tackling this project!

Especially in old places. Maybe because they hold memories, even when nothing is there.
We had that back in thr late 70's in my house growing up. We prepared for theblizzard weather snow storms for the winter. We called it our "Food Storage Room" that my dad built.
I wouldn't put bags or boxes on the basement shelves. I would use sealed totes on the shelves for the bags and boxes otherwise you'll find bugs and rodents will invade your stock. I'm speaking from experience.
Target has a "bright room" brand stackable clear box, 28.3 qt. It's perfect.you can see thru it and even make a list and tuck it into the end of the box for an inventory

I’m so happy you are deciding to prepare and not rely on “just in time” deliveries ! I have been raising, preserving and storing food for 40 years and even though I now live alone I still keep my basement totally stocked !
If covid did anything good, it was to prompt people to prep and if we look at the threats going on in the world I can’t imagine anyone not wanting to have food stored !!!
For those of y’all interested in how to get started there are many prepping channels out there to help you. I realize not many people can do what Lisa has done here all at once, this costs many thousands of dollars but don’t let that discourage you, just start, start with 5 extra food items at the store to tuck away. The biggest money saving and usefulness of food storage is to buy ingredients and not just prepared products, if you have bulk ingredients you can make just about anything!!! If you don’t already cook from scratch, add a few cookbooks to your pantry and start learning !!!
We are headed for hard times, everything you prepare for now will help !

My grandmother's house is old, mid to late 1800's, her basement has a low ceiling and the house is being held up by huge barn beams, she had a big fruit cellar that was full of canned goods. I always thought it was a scary place, but now I can appreciate it for what it is. She's been gone for several years now, but she lived in her big ole house by herself (my grandfather passed when I was 2, I am almost 55) until her late 90s.... I always loved her house, and now of course, another family lives there.
We have a pantry in our basement, the steps are right off the kitchen and the pantry is at the bottom of the steps in the fruit cellar, so very close and easy to run down quick for stuff.
I have always called it "the grocery store". 😊

Having a well stocked larder is always a good idea. That stonework is gorgeous, and how smart to have someone who works on heritage buildings do the mortar. Don’t know how humid your basement is, but I’ve found my brown sugar will absorb the ambient humidity, so I put it storage containers rather than store it in the original bags.
I always hated going in the basement when it was my turn to “choose the 2 veggies” for the dinner. I was always scared because one of my brothers once told me an alligator 🐊 lived down there.

If after some time you notice dust is a bit extra of a chore, you can make curtains for the shelves too.
During my investigations into food storage, it has been highly recommended not to store directly on concrete. I have a spot where I put thick cardboard down then put my water storage on. I did buy another shelving unit for bulk grains in 5gal buckets.
EXTRA: Sprinkle around bay leaves and peppermint sprigs. I swear by them for pest repellents!
I forgot to mention it is best not to store in paper or plastic original containers. I transfer most everything.

Before you started talking about your foundation I noticed how beautiful the stone was I'm glad you didn't cover it up. My house turns 110 this year and it has a really unique Foundation it's good to know they can be restored and maintained. Your storage is beautiful. You're so going to enjoy this thanks for sharing

The stone wall looks beautiful. We have a 'grocery store' as well and it makes life so much simpler when you know you have what you need on hand.
Love the stone and the mat! I was happy to see you decant some of the flours from bags to red topped canisters. I would suggest putting any bagged items in canisters even if you just place the bags in the canisters or bins....good mouse prevention. Love those screw top "pickle" buckets. ( I used to work in food service and that's what came in those types of buckets😂)the screw tops are so much easier to open! Nice job!
So glad that you didn’t cover the stone! Also, it is really nice to see an overflow pantry like that that isn’t necessarily all things that have been canned by the content creator. I’m just getting started in this way a bit more heavily and though it’s amazing to see jars offood that people have grown themselves, it’s nice to know that it doesn’t have to be that way immediately! Also, I love the crate idea for the extra jars, etc.
Beautiful! I don't know if there's room, but it's pretty easy to build pull-out shelves for your pantry cupboard upstairs (if there's room in the space to pull them out). We have a very deep and narrow closet in our bathroom and our handyman built two shelves (with rims, so things wouldn't fall off) and then bought the pull-out hardware. It is so nice to be able to easily access the things on those shelves...even things in the back!
This is exactly what I was thinking about. If that cupboard in the upstairs pantry is deeper than 24”, like any regular base cupboard, then it might need to be custom. However, I think it would be worth it to have full-depth access to that space.

We don't have a basement down here in lower Alabama (Dothan) but I did get a lot of great ideas to reclaim my space - our youngest just moved out - I am definitely feeling misplaced. I started going through my "stuff" in the attic, under beds, and closets! Wow how much double stuff I had, stuff like you said I wish I knew I had, and then the area of "one day... stuff" There was a lot of that!! I committed to selling all at our upcoming yard sale and donated a truckload as well. I also made a notebook for each area - the attic, laundry room, and closets. We too were going to build and found the same metal racks at Sam's! Love them! Your wall is beautiful! Thanks for the inspiration - I LOVE HOW YOUR SPACE TURNED OUT! Blessings and love, Angie

We live in Dothan also:) What a small world. It is humid here and I have had trouble trying to find places to store a home grocery. Especially like cans upstairs. I was wondering if it would get too heavy on metal racks. I purchased five from different estate sales.
@@faith4390 Really cool we are on same thought process and around the corner. Great find on the shelves! I had someone tell me to make sure heavier items lower shelves - anchor to wall or floor, reinforced shelves with wood (2"x4") in middle so no issues. Humidity - cut air with knife 🙏🏼💕

I've been busy making our food pantry, since i recently started canning. I love it. It is such a fulfilling feeling to have what we need and get it organized. ❤
I love the stone in the basement! We built a pantry in our downstairs basement. We actually have a garage in our basement, but we dont use it for a garage. We store extra stuff, our freezers and extra refrigerator are there. We also keep firewood in that garage. We ended up building a wall and insulating it for a walk in pantry. We have several of the same shelves for all our food.

Yes we have beautiful shelves in our basement but yes things do have to be put in containers because of mice.A friend did tell me a great trick also is lay dryer sheets on the shelves mice don't like them.
We did this several years ago in our home as well. I am sure that it has saved us thousands of dollars and helped us to eat better. I had started with just one Ikea kallax bookshelf on a blank wall and then decided what was going to be an extra bathroom in our basement may as well be a pantry. It is one of my favorite things about our house.

Love your basement. Functional and charming with a bit of whimsy. When you get the table and chairs there I’m sure you will be tempted to retreat there for an occasional cup of tea.
My biggest problem with stockpiling is rotating! Such a waste when I find items with long padt expiration dates 😢

The stones look amazing and would be great if you finished the floors too then you would have an easy to clean surface and you can make a small area for the kids to play or a big table for schooling you can also make a school supply shelving or a sewing corner 😊

This is a great idea. Rotating stock carefully is important so that products don’t get old. We lived for decades on an acreage 20 min to a grocery store so have back stock was essential and keeping a running grocery list. Thanks for sharing this excellent information.
