Hike to Stuðlagil Canyon in Iceland

  • Explore Stuðlagil Canyon in East Iceland. It is one of the hidden gems in East Iceland. Studlagil Canyon is in the Glacier Valley called Jökuldalur.
    Park your car at Klaustursel farm and walk across the bridge and hike for about 3 miles one way to reach the basalt columns area. Follow the gravel road to the right (south) and the river to the canyon. About halfway, there is a waterfall on the basalt columns. There are a couple minor water crossings. The shortcut is parking at Grund farm but that does not offer a good view.

      The hike to the canyon is quite long if you park your car at Klaustursel farm, but if the bridge is open for cars, you can drive almost half way to park your car closer to the canyon and then walk. This will cut the hiking distance almost half.

    My husband and I have planned a 3 week self drive, hiking, puffin viewing trip to Iceland July 2023. We are avid hikers. I like your style of showcasing the actual hikes. No need for distracting music I agree. Drone footages are nice to see but not particularly helpful because you do not see the scenery from this vantage. Thank you for sharing your videos. They are extremely helpful. Will be checking out your other Iceland videos.

      Thank you for the feedback. Keep in mind that you might be able to park in the second parking lot so you can save time and cut the hiking time in half. It was not allowed at the time when I was there and I am not sure if they allow it now. You might need to double-check that. As far as hiking in other areas, You might enjoy the waterfall circle hike in eastern Iceland. It is about a 4-hour hike in a beautiful remote area. I shared a video of it here czcams.com/video/KYZ0p7N_vpc/video.html
      Also hiking in Thorsomork area is a unique experience. I shared a video of that too. czcams.com/video/MKwQeykGUTE/video.html

    We watch all your videos from beginning to end. So beautiful and helpful. Music and drone footage adds nothing for us. The view from a drone is not the view you see when you are there in person.

    Thank you, again! This is also on my list. I am curious... can you not drive to that second parking lot you mentioned that you thought was for construction workers, by crossing the white bridge? Great video! I watched *almost* all of this one, too!

      @WandererBell  Před 2 lety

      You might be able to drive to the second parking lot along the way to save time if the bridge is open. Thank you for watching.

    Hi Wanderer, greetings from Malaysia! I'm visiting Iceland next week, and Stuðlagil Canyon is on my bucket list. Thank you for your video and helpful tips! To reach the location you start the filming in this video, should I key Klaustursel Farm in the Google map instead of Stuðlagil Canyon? Because I'm worried if I key in Stuðlagil Canyon, the map will lead me to the other side, which I can't go down to the canyon. Thank you!

    • @WandererBell
      @WandererBell  Před rokem +1

      Yes, you can put in the farm name on google maps and it should find it. That is how I got to it. Remember that you might be able to drive on the bridge and park in the second parking lot that you saw in this video. You will need to ask if they will allow you to do that. It was not allowed when I was there, so the hike was so long for me. If they allow you to do that, you will save time on hiking there. Enjoy your trip!

      I hope you enjoyed the place. I think the other side is called Grund farm if I am not mistaken. It is a good shortcut to see the canyon if you don't want to hike down to the canyon.
