The purpose of this mod is to restore the expressions lost in kiwami. The previous versions I made and posted on this channel did not sync up well with the originals and weren't really that accurate to them either so I've remade all of them

The facial experssions in the original are damn impressive considering the hardware and age.

@@arturoz6547 emulation won't change the character animations, this is what they looked like on original hardware. emulating would just crank up the output resolution

Another neat Restoration would be the Original voice acting. Japanese of course. Kiryu's Original performance was much better in my opinion. Like. He sounds like he doesn't want his brother to die. Even Voice Cracks.

@@NiCoNiCoNiCola Yeah, although they did make Kiryu be emotional in some scenes like the Kazama flashback and him beating down the final boss, he's still too stoic for his current experience

I love Nishiki's part, that last smile he flashes before pulling the trigger, is so much better now. It kinda makes his smile bittersweet, he is smiling, but with a bit of an evil grin as well. Very good detail for a PS2 game, even tho it isnt that noticable in the OG

Sorry bro but it's pretty damn similar, i wouldn't say "so much better" lol.
It is kinda fucked up how Kiryu just walks into Purgatory, a place close to him that he has helped out and vice versa, sees it burning up in flames and doesn't even flash a look of concern. I get that he's being stoic, but the original still showed that in his determined gaze after his initial look of revelation.
I agree but they did knowingly make this change and I only made this mod to showcase custom auths (cutscene files) and chose to do so by replicating PS2 animations mostly 1:1. In Kiwami they did actually change cutscenes other than these but said cutscenes are prerendered hence why this is all I could do.
The limited ps2 animation is so obvious in that one, there he looks like he just came across a wacky substory or something
There is no reason for him to make a surprised expression in that moment, he has already seen the fire/smoke from outside the park, plus the crowd speaking about the incident and the firefighters at the entrance, he already knew what he was going to see

Well, as we all know, emotion is something that only hardware from 1999 can convey. Can't expect a game from 2019 or so to measure up to that, but it's still totally better though.
To be fair though, you can tell that he's taken aback even in Kiwami, his expression is just only in his eyes and eyebrows.

Thanks Skirish, I feel half the problem was his model which wasn’t bad it just didn’t accommodate the PS2 animations well
@@mugen5124 the old Kiryu model had much softer features, that's one big reason, when I did a full up texture redesign for Kiryu's Y3 - Dead Souls model, I completely reshaped his eyebrows to look less perma angry
I actually like Kiryu being more expressive. Makes him feel more human. Instead of "state of constant, unbridled anger"
I feel like that's what he wants people to think a lot of the time though. He's pretty into being perceived as cool and/or threatening.
I love the fact that Nishiki looks more smug in the modded version

One thing that always bothered me in Kiwami was the complete lack of expression in so many cutscenes. People just had their default face on like talking mannequins.

@@vgames9207 Emulate the original Yakuza release and you will see what he means. Kiwami's substories make use of default animations (sometimes none at all!) and those in-game "cutscenes" when the original game had pre-rendered cutscenes, fully animated, even for some of the silly ones. That's one example. if you want to find a video example for exact definition, look up "Respect The Original Yakuza" on CZcams, it's a video that side-by-side compares what I'm talking about.
I plat K1 and it's still great - but the hundred hours I spent in the original have 10x more soul.

Just compare to the original as well as every other game in the series. It's very noticable

RGG definitely should've put more effort into the facial animations for the Kiwami games. There's quite a bit lost in translation due to using older animations on much newer assets. They were already reusing the same mocap and camera shots from the original games, so I don't think touching up the faces would've been too much to ask.
They actually did touch up the facial animations in a couple of cutscenes, the Nishiki one is a perfect example, there’s also the Gary Buster Holmes fight cutscene which I’m convinced they changed because the smile he did in the PS2 version looked that goofy on the new model for him, I didn’t do that one because that cutscene is sadly pre-rendered
When playing through Kiwami 2 I noticed that some cutscenes had really astonishing facial animation while others didn't even have proper lip sync. The inconsistency is very weird.
@@BuckShockley13 Speaking of Y2. In the iconic "Kiryu Smash" cutscene he has a very emotional face and it turns into anger. But in Kiwami he just has an angry face. And also in one shot he just looks like 😐 meanwhile OG was a little more expressive

This is what I was talking about before. When RGG copy/paste animations from the old games they forgot a lot of details such as Kiryu being expressive, and is mostly my problem when people convert heat actions to Kiryu normally never used by him. I hate that in K1/K2 he's not as expressive as he is in the original games and this mod is going to help change that.

it is absolutely insane seeing kiryu more human. however all of their expressions fit the situation perfectly. but... yuya was just for the funnies mostly imo.
For some reason, my dumbass clicked on this video thinking that someone modded the PS2 version to look like Kiwami. Then I took a closer look at the title then rewatched the video and now it all makes sense.

as someone who never played the ps2 yakuza games and started with yakuza 0 ps2 kiryu will hunt me in my dreams 🙂
Ps2 kiryu look like a common yakuza thug, which strangely i like it more then the usual kiryu, feels like he is a "has been" Instead of a "legend return" Yakuza
It's such a minor thing but for some reason I really like how the OG's subtitles stretches out the "Nishikiiiiiiiiiiiiii!", makes it feel more impactful I think
that last part threw me into the trenches and i also got nuked, qutie comediac.
Honestly I don't mind the new animations because honestly more reserved and introverted people like Kyriu look emotionless in real life most of the time as well lol.
its a remake of a game where he showed a ton of emotion, makes no sense to not keep that.

I played the PS2 version on, well, PS2, and now I think PS2 Kiryu looks like the pogchamp guy, lol
i feel like they based his now current face from Miyamoto Musashi who had very similiar face features
I dont think Kiwami's version is bad, but I can see why someone would want to make a mod to restore the PS2 expressions, even if it is an overall minute detail in the overall game.

Lol I never played the originals, only got into the series long after kiwami 1 and 2 came out, so I've never seen the original Kiryu before. I know it's just the graphics of the time (that would have blown me away back when Ocarina of Time was what I thought was the absolute best graphics could get), but looking at it now OG Kiryu just looks kinda dopey lol, not like the incredible badass he is. The facial animation really make it
And while I'm here, I gotta say I've been loving the series. Though the very last scene of 2 (just beat it yesterday) loses some impact when you know there's a 3 4 5 and 6 lmao
I know his new look is iconic but I kinda like going back to see this more expressive, human version of the character. It's like his humble roots that have been overwritten by the legend

I think Wildstar did a pretty good job of the dungeon idea you described. The first dungeon was a training course where it showed mechanics, and what each role's job was in dungeons. It took it nice and slow and had a character bark at you on how stuff works. And on top of that, the 4 social roles thing they had (Combat, Exploring, Settling, lore) made it so in the over world while you did the thing you picked, youd frequently run into someone of a different social role and youd help each other out. I remember someone with the lore role wanting to get into a little cave, that could only be opened by explorers (aka me) So we had a little impromptu party to explore this side area!
