So naturally, I had to go back and reread the entire chapter. I'll never look at Aragorn's line the same way again. It'll always stand out to me because of this sermon.

When my ex broke up with me what Tim is describing happened to me with lots of inner pain I was shown a big idol that lived inside of me. Now, I’ve been jobless for a while and now preparing and looking for a new job. I think another idol is being shown to me. That material prosperity is owned to me and that God will give it to me no matter what. Lots of pain for me here. I already asked to die once…Lord 😂😅

Great teaching Tim the only test I can say is For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.

Very simply put, life is way beyond complex. The simplest aspects are never quite simple and oversimplifying can be practical yet not the truth many times. Different people face very different combinations of barriers and circumstances through life. It's so easy to simplify and say certain things yet everything is very complex with different factors; and very much of life we can't know. It's easy to just believe and become comfortable with preconceived notions as well. When we finally learn more, the truth of more knowledge makes clear how little we know in the bigger picture.
Where do we draw the line between thinking and over-analyzing? Where does one aspect begin and another end? Am I foolish and believe I will absolutely be true to my principles no matter what? Many grey areas in life make much of this way more complex. Wisdom is a lot about dealing with all of these different situations despite our limitations and working together with different people having a variance of circumstances.
Our wisdom is most needed and tested during the toughest and greatest times. Such moments most distinguish those with and without wisdom. We must also realize that God's logic can be very different from the worldly views and the greatest moments for many people can be the worst from His view and the worst things can be worked by Him for the good of all those who believe in Him.
The Bible makes it clear that fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; and that those truly wise aren't such with their very eyes. We must humble ourselves and admit the limits of our wisdom to even begin becoming wise. Anyone who thinks they're wise isn't such and knowing more makes us realize how little we know as well. Such is especially difficult to conceive for many in a world where much of the view of seeking Truth in the Lord is portrayed as obsolete and where we have become too comfortable to even question where wisdom begins. And wisdom is often only thought for monetary and/or personal advancement reasons by many people. We only gain wisdom when it integrates with our Faith and we seek something greater than wisdom itself.
The irony of wisdom is how even seeking it along with answering when it's worth obtaining are questions one needs wisdom to answer in many circumstances. Many of our answers begin with the questions we ask. Such requires so much deeper thinking along with ability & courage to challenge even your main assumptions. In some ways, we don't even obtain wisdom by seeking only it but rather seeking much greater than wisdom itself.
Beyond success and difficulties being the biggest testing times, the transitions between them can also be difficult. Life throws at us many difficulties and successes simultaneously. And success sometimes immediately brings unexpected and/or extreme difficulties while the vice versa is true as well. Sometimes these things happen so suddenly and unplanned that transitions can place so much stress upon anyone. The best moments can immediately become nightmares and we experience some of our best moments in the midst of nightmares. Wisdom must extend into how we handle such stresses and situations as well!

I wish I didn't know this by experience. I was able to be a financially free and fun person. But I still fornicated and never had victory in this. Then one day I made a risky and bad financial decision and it made me poor. I lost everything. I wonder if God did this to teach me a lesson. It's hard to know if this happened by God's hand. Anyone can look back in hindsight and find sin. How do we know? Did God do this to show me that I am a fool? So depressed from losing my fun lifestyle. Feel very angry and sad. This guy is great. He made me realize that my fun and free lifestyle WAS MY IDOL! It was more important to me than God. I feel suicidal from losing my plan/ dream life of just travelling and have rental income and not need a job. I wanted it so bad. But maybe God did not give me that dream, because I would've got worse...maybe. I hope it was out of love. God, where are you? I am sorry :(...O' God-help me have a godly sorrow and grant me true repentance and allow me to be wiser from this test.

@@outerspace6448 I worked for 15 yrs for a gov't funded company and it allowed me to save alot. I ended up owning a few rental properties and that was how i lived. Free from the 9-5 was awesome-so devestated to lose it.
Nothing happens outside of God's jurisdiction, you can count on it that He is in control. I was brought out of the darkness in a similar way, the Lord uses suffering to wake us out of our stupor and to open our eyes to the truth. Don't take it lightly that you could recognize what your idol was/is, that is a gift, the world doesn't see it's sin as idol worship. The fact that you do is evidence of the work of the Holy Spirit. I humbly ask you to read the bible, begin a habit of prayer, attending a local church, and watching more sermons. If you already do, I meant no offense, it is just my relaying of the commands that God gives in the bible, God keep you and take you home.
Thank you for sharing. I pray that God leads you to find your deepest love and joy in Him. And that you may find joy in your work because of your love and joy to serve Him. Because He is worthy and He is good. God bless you.
Mr. E, In this short earthly life, you've had an awful setback, but you have wisdom which is greater than all your losses, which prepares you more than your success ever did to enjoy eternal happiness where your treasures will endure and not be lost or stolen. No, I do not
I don't understand why Dr. Keller would use the actual names of human beings who he says a writer in the Village Voice said were "terrible people" after gaining success. I don't consider myself a particular fan of any of the people named, but why name them? It's akin to gossip, celebrity gossip at that. Anytime, you label someone with their bad behavior, it makes it harder for them to reform. This sermon is 15 years old and one of those folks says he's now a Christian so did getting called out for bad behavior in the past help or hinder him? It would be interesting to know.
