In a league, tournament, or DUPR game, sure! Target the weaker player as that’s strategy. But if you want to get better, target the better player during rec games. That way you’re pushing yourself constantly - you won’t get away with little mistakes as the better player will take advantage of them. If winning rec games is more important than getting better, than by all means, keep targeting the weaker player.

Totally agree with your comment. I was going to make this point until I saw that you stated it better than I could. What a waste of time in rec play to hit just to the weaker player.

That was a fun game to watch, all four players were very good. I think Mike was the most skilled overall, and at placement, but all four contributed to a good game. I wish all my recreational games had that much play with such a variety of rallies. It's really rewarding to get into rec play with four pretty equally-skilled players. My guess is that any combination of those four as partners, even Mike/Zak against Sherry/Kathy, would be pretty competitive. The 10-4 score sort of belied what went on, and my guess Zak and Kathy could still win against them in any given alternate match, depending on all the variables that makes someone play good, better, great, or so-so on any given day.

Thanks for watching. Those are excellent points. They are very good players. Mike and Sherry did what was necessary to win that game. And they won it rather convincingly.

I prefer to play both equally except when good play dictates otherwise, for instance, someone on the other team hangs back, then you have to hit it too them. Sometimes when a player is playing bad pickleball, they leave themselves vulnerable and you have to remember to play against the vulnerabilities as a priority.

Thanks for watching. Good point. I always target the player who makes the mistake of not moving forward. Usually, that is the weakest player because they do not have a solid understanding of how pickleball is played.

They certainly looked better than many videos claiming to be 4.0 or even higher. I agree they could have mixed up the teams and they would all be competitive. That is typically what our groups do. Play 6 games and change partners each time so everyone plays with and against each player equally. Fun to watch.

That's a good point about videos of games claiming to be 4.0. The next one I post will be players claiming to be 4.0 that are actually 3.0. Stay tuned. Thanks for watching.

I definitely think the older couple would be 4.0 at their appropriate age bracket. I saw nice drops, dinks and overheads. Solid game by both players.

I have not started my pickleball pick-apart pick-apart channel yet but have a few comments. in a tournament, targeting a specific player is a good strategy but is bad form in rec play. Everyone is there to play and it is super annoying when the other team never hits you the ball. As mentioned below, if you want to get better you have to play against better players and targeting the weaker player is the opposite of that. You also call it a flip shot when everyone else calls it a flick.

These players were very skilled. I wonder why the player who hit the ball behind her back didn't just hit a backhand rather than spinning around to hit a difficult behind-the-back shot. It was fun to watch but unnecessary to return that ball that way. That woman also keeps her paddle down by her side which is a problem at higher level play.

  • @donaldlenardson6291
    @donaldlenardson6291 Před 8 měsíci

If Sherry would not have her body so open ( facing the net ) while attempting her overhead put away shots , she could have actually made those shots much less returnable. Instead , they are relatively weak , lacking power & pace . She needs to close her body away from the net & toward the side line in order for her body weight transfer ( from back to front foot ) to generate power to the paddle face upon contact with the ball . It is also much easier to visually track ball this way ( looking directly at the ball ) instead of relying on one's peripheral vision to do the same .

If I was in the younger female player's position against two older players who iced out my partner, I'd lob them at every chance. It's so dirty to ice out a player in rec play. Lobs are dirty, too.

I'm usually not too negative, but they seem to be good 3.5 level players. So many unforced errors, weak put aways, lack of positional awareness, and lack of proper dinking tactics. Decent players for their age, very good overall is being very kind (which is ok too, I guess...😂)

I've been targeted as the weaker player in rec play because I was. Well, I had more of a chance to practice. Also, in one case, the man I was playing with (I am female) just stepped up and mashed them.

Oh puhlease, people getting upset because you mention someone's age? That is ridiculous. Age is a fact, not something one can avoid or change. And it is a factor in playing sports. Not the only factor of course, but it does come into play. And this coming from someone who has played sports competitively all my life and i am 69 years old.

I think constantly targeting the weaker player in rec ball is BS. I don't do it because I want to challenge myself and hit to the better player to see what will happen. I especially hate it when men target a weaker female. It's like dude you are so obvious. I kind of lose respect for men who do that. I mean it's rec ball.

It gets old. Its REC play.
I get more practice hitting the ball against a wall.
What it did do is made me learn how to poach the living shit out of the ball. without mercy.
