"La Leggenda del Piave" (The Legend of Piave), also known as "La Canzone del Piave" (The Song of Piave), is an Italian patriotic song written by E. A. Mario after the Battle of the Piave River in June 1918. In September 1943 the future king of Italy Umberto II chose it as the new national anthem replacing the "Marcia Reale". It remained the official anthem of Italy until June 1944, when Rome was liberated and the government and the King returned to the capital, the "Marcia Reale" was in fact reintroduced as a national anthem and remained both after the appointment of Crown Prince Umberto of Savoy as Lieutenant General of the Realm and after his elevation to King. After the 1946 Italian institutional referendum, the newly established Italian Republic selected "Il Canto degli Italiani" in its stead. Today, the song is popular in Italy and played by a military band on many occasions, including National Unity and Armed Forces Day (November 4).

ITALIANO: La canzone del Piave, conosciuta anche come La leggenda del Piave, è una delle più celebri canzoni patriottiche italiane. Il brano fu composto nel 1918 dal maestro Ermete Giovanni Gaeta (noto con lo pseudonimo di E. A. Mario).
Durante la seconda guerra mondiale, dopo l'armistizio dell'8 settembre 1943, il governo italiano l'adottò provvisoriamente come inno nazionale, poiché si pensò fosse giusto sostituire la Marcia Reale con un canto che ricordasse la vittoria dell'Italia nel primo conflitto mondiale.
La canzone del Piave ebbe la funzione di inno nazionale italiano fino al 1944, quando fu reintrodotta la Marcia Reale dopo il ritorno di re e governo nella Capitale liberata.

Solitamente in Italia cantiamo la prima strofa, come nel nostro inno. La canzone è del 1918, dopo la fine della prima guerra mondiale, e non ha a che fare col fascismo: la prima strofa parla del viaggio dei soldati verso il fronte il 24 maggio 1915, quando dichiarammo guerra all'Austria degli Asburgo. La seconda e la terza, invece, della tremenda sconfitta di Caporetto (novembre 1917) e dell'arretramento del fronte sul Piave e sul monte Grappa, mentre l'ultima della ricacciata degli Austriaci dal territorio italiano.

Unfortunately pretty much all the Savoy monarchs (in the legal line of succession) after Umberto II have been total idiots, and even downright criminals. If the man who would be our king was our king, I'd still prefer the republic, despite it's many issues.
@@tuccerjim3084 no, VE and EF were excluded from the line of succession in 1970 and 1972. The true king is Aimone di Savoia, descendant of the second son of Vittorio Emanuele II.
I understand that you may feel nostalgic about the monarchy, but Viktor Emmanuel III betrayed the constitution and gave our country to Mussolini without opposition, even though the fascist party had only received a minority of votes in the last election. He was a criminal and putting an end to his family's rule over Italy was the right thing to do.

In ogni caso, in uno stato di diritto, se un partito minoritario minaccia di fare la rivoluzione se non gli si consegna il potere, il potere non glielo si dà comunque e si lotta per difendere le istituzioni legittime. Se domani il Partito Democratico (per fare un esempio assurdo) imbracciasse le armi e chiedesse il potere con la forza lei glielo consegnerebbe pur di evitare il caos? Io no, combatterei per la democrazia, come avrebbe dovuto fare il re, ma evidentemente nella democrazia non ci credeva mica tanto.
